A local editorial urges Osceola business owners and residents to prepare a Spring and Summer Fix Up Clean Up Paint Up plan for businesses homes and property. It stresses removing Dutch Elm disease dead elms and tackling eye sore buildings while urging city action to raze derelict structures and improve streets and public spaces.
Scouts will pick up Goodwill bags on Saturday morning from front porches. Fill bags with repairables like clothing and shoes for handicapped workers paid from item sales. William R. Wolfe died at Camp Stewart Virginia January 27 1918 at age 26 from pneumonia after serving in the aviation section of the US Army. He was Osceola born and buried there with pallbearers in military service. Wolfe Post 91 of the American Legion was named for him as Polk County s first WWI casualty.
Osceola’s Kent Heckman is a member of Midland College A capella choir and Clef Dweller. The 70 member ensemble tours March 28 to Easter Sunday visiting Iowa Illinois Indiana Wisconsin Minnesota before a homecoming concert at Midland College on April 8.
Funeral services for W. Walter Madson, 74, who died Friday at the Samaritan Home in Osceola, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home. Burial was in Shelby cemetery. Services were held recently in Lincoln for Dr. Ivan Carr, a former Osceola dentist, and his sister Miss Ruth Ellen Carr, both of Walla Walla, Washington. Their deaths occurred a few days apart. Both were University of Nebraska graduates.
The 1969 Heart Fund in Polk County raised 2390.05. County Chairman G E Ekstrand commends local citizens for their generous response and notes the effort aims to reduce heart disease deaths and disability. Contributions by town include Polk 232.97 Osceola 404.00 Shelby 226.63 Stromsburg 526.45. Ekstrand thanks all who helped solicit or contributed to the Heart Fund.
Kenneth Scholz son of Mr and Mrs John Scholz Shelby Nebraska promoted to Specialist 4. His address lists APO San Francisco 96226. Michael C Voss son of Mr and Mrs Robert D Voss Shelby Nebraska serves aboard USS Providence as Seaman Apprentice. Providence is the first fleet flagship now in San Diego after a two year combat tour off Vietnam coast and played a role in Hue during Tet.
Gene F Schlesinger, Specialist 4th Class, was named Soldier of the Month for February by SVC Battery, 3rd Battalion, 35th Field Artillery at Wertheim Germany. He earned a five day European trip with expenses paid by the Army, visiting Garmisch and Innsbruck for rest at renowned ski resorts.
Friday tryouts elected B-team members Sharon Green Karen Johnson Jackie Rowan and Beth Wieseman. Varsity selections include Joan Cerny Kathy Hayes Janis Peterson and Pam Snodrass. Daryl Fosberg and Donnette Jones crowned TAPS king and queen for March of Dimes donations. Evan Wieseman announced county chairman. $816 was collected by four high schools. The District Dramatics Contest at Marquette saw Kay Lux earn a 3 and Melanie Monson a 2 for gun control and speech. The Bulldogs earned tenth in Lincoln Star ratings and Jack Cerny received honorable mention on the Class C all-state list. The senior class play If Mother Only Knew is set for Friday April 18. Track coach Charles Gordon reports 23 boys began workouts for the first meet. A junior high dance is set for Friday March 28.
The Chamber of Commerce sets March 31 as Ladies Night at a Spring Dinner for wives of members. Walter Behlen of Columbus will speak at Osceola United Methodist Church. Tickets from chamber members are $2.25 for the 7:00 p.m. meal.
Mr and Mrs Larry Meister and their son relocated to the farm home east of Osceola recently vacated by the Larry Larson family who now reside in Shelby Larry Larson intends to depart for Havasu City Arizona soon to join Stanley and Ricky Braithwait and Wayne Mentink of Fullerton who have found work there
Osceola bowlers and their wives attended the Legion bowling tournament last weekend in Beatrice. Named attendees include Dean Buffington Sheldon Bond Wayne Stallings Mike Snodgrass Francis Urban Jim Brigham Dave Rutter Hubert Girard Charles Fischer and Glen Wobig.
Polk County will get 7005.38 as its share of 70502.68 to be divided among 12 counties in Consumers Subdivision No. 3. The payment covers the second half of 1968 taxes in lieu of real estate and personal taxes and the 5 percent gross revenue tax on 1968 city and village retail revenues. The check is mailed to the local Consumers manager for delivery to the treasurer. Money must be distributed by the county treasurer to county state city and school districts.
The Legion Auxiliary met at the home of Mrs. Albert Timm with 20 members present. Sewing occupied the afternoon while Mrs. Art McVeigh assisted. plans were announced for quilting sessions led by Mrs. Jack Malek on Monday and Tuesday of the coming week.

Doane College honors its winningest coach Al Papik as guest speaker at the 0. H. S. Athletic Banquet. The event begins at 7:00 p.m. in the school auditorium.
St Paul Lutheran Church announces a year long time change effective this Sunday March 30. Church School will start at 9 30 a m and Worship Services at 10 30 a m. The change follows the Annual Meeting vote to aid planning of Sunday activities.
Voters in City and School District 19 go to polls Tuesday April 1 to elect two city council representatives and two school board members. Polls open 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM at the Polk County Court House. City candidates include Second Ward Earl Watts Nora Snodgrass and First Ward Ray Soukup Glen Green. District 19 candidates are Hubert Girard Lorraine Lewis Nancy Norton and Lillian McDonald with two to be elected. A write in space for Police Magistrate appears with no current nominees.
Carl Schumacher from the Nebraska Division of Employment will meet interested residents at the Polk County Court House Welfare Office on Tuesday April 1 at 1 30 p m. He will also be at the City Clerk’s office in Stromsburg at 10 30 a m that same day to meet locals.
Osceola firemen worked overnight on March 18 to prevent flooding of Davis Creek by manually moving ice jams and dynamiting a large jam southeast of town. Five charges were detonated under supervision by Huck Rowan aided by Lee Schroeder and Eldon Lauber. The blasts broke up ice and debris and reduced the flood threat. water fell below flood stage by Wednesday morning.
