Dey Rites Held in Stromsburg for Herman Dey

Funeral services for Herman Dey, 73, were March 24 at Anderson Funeral Chapel in Stromsburg with Rev. Deryl Reed officiating. He died March 21 at Annie Jeffrey Hospital after a lengthy illness. Interment followed at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Gresham.

End of an era as Thelen house in Shelby is torn down

Demolition of the long vacant Thelen house in Shelby advances by Blanche Brigham Demolition. Once a showplace tied to Conrad Thalen, the property passed to Lidian Swanson then Martha Hetker before neglect led to its decay. Fire marshal condemnation followed as plans to burn the structure faded and Leonard Coffin and sons proceed with razing.

Nurse Patricia Dahmke Capped At Immanuel Medical Center

Patricia L Dahmke daughter of Mr and Mrs Chris Dahmke was among 40 student nurses capped in Bloom Hall at Immanuel Medical Center Omaha Dr Reuben Swanson gave the address and the School of Nursing chorus sang several songs Mr and Mrs Dahmke and Mark attended the caping ceremony and the tea honoring the class in the Nursing School Sallskaprum venue

Lincoln Sowers to Be in Osceola on April 10

Lincoln Sowers reps from Lincoln, backed by 74 Lincoln firms, will visit Osceola April 10 from 2 45 to 3 15 p m as part of a goodwill effort to boost Nebraska business and welcome state visitors. The Sowers Club, affiliated with the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, aims to strengthen intercity ties and learn about other communities. Osceola business men are urged to attend.

Over 150 Legionnaires and Auxiliary members attended a Golden Anniversary celebration for Wolfe Post No. 91. The gala on Saturday night March 29 featured 50th anniversary members, a ham dinner, and dancing at the Legion Club.

Community Action Workshop Held in Columbus and Area Meeting in Wahoo

Local citizens Jay McDonald Archie Klein Orval Eikenhorst and Chris Dahmke attended a Community Action Workshop Tuesday evening March 27 in Columbus. The dinner and program at Louie's Restaurant were sponsored by the Technical Action Program. Archie Klein joined an Area Meeting of the Community Betterment Program the next day in Wahoo. Osceola is entered in the 1969 70 Community Betterment Contest with planning underway for current year projects.

Recent changes of residence in Osceola area

The Lavern Millers moved from the Earl Watts rental in east Osceola to a southeast Osceola home bought from the Raymond Millers. Joining in the move were Raymond Miller of Aurora Pat Miller of Omaha the Roger Maybons of Grand Island the Merle Maybons and Dennis and the Lloyd Millers of Fullerton. Mr and Mrs David Ienn moved to the Ienn farm home six miles south of Shelby.

State tax field rep announces schedule

Beginning April 10 1969 Gary Rowe field representative of the State Tax Commissioners office will be available monthly to assist Polk County residents on State tax matters. He will be at the Polk County Court House from 9 30 a m until 3 30 p m on the second Thursday of each month. This itinerant service will enable Mr Rowe to be available to the maximum number of taxpayers from each area at a specific convenient time.

Cerny among seniors honored by York Elks

Osceola student Jack Cerny was among six outstanding high school seniors honored by York Elks Lodge No. 1024 at the Honors Banquet on March 25. Cerny received a $50 second place scholarship. Teresa Bedient of Polk High School won first place and the top scholarship, with other awards going to Gresham High School and York High School honorees for leadership and scholarship.

Former residents make news in Ohio

Jackie Malek won the 100 yard butterfly in the Junior Division at the Ohio State University meet part of the Ohio West Virginia YMCA Swimming and diving championships. Jim Malek will head a national franchise system named Wash-Our-Car Inc with Dayton as home base and $17 million in financing aims for 5,000 units in five years.

Osceola School Board approves 1969-70 teaching contracts

The Osceola District 19 School Board offered contracts to 28 teachers for the 1969-70 year with April 15 deadline to accept. Base salary starts at 6100 with scale increases by degree and additional study, plus a 108 annual insurance allowance. Several staff announced they will not return, including Norman Cheat and Richard Hart, with retirements and relocations noted.

At the OHS Athletic Banquet Bernie Gissler presented a three page summary of OHS football statistics from 1945 to 1968 listing yearly scores coaches captains superintendent and win loss and tie records. He aims to extend back to 1900 and seeks old records to fill gaps.
