Chamber of Commerce directors weighed a 1956 racing meet and several track sites in South Sioux City with profits from any returns to charity such as 4 H and fair activities.
Leed a four year old black and tan coon dog chased a beaver into a hole on the Beaver River just north of Boone. After days of being unable to escape friends dug him out with an 18 foot trench and a 14 foot deep hole leaving him weak but alive.
During Thursday’s regular meeting the Ashland city council settled on a plan for 15-minute parking zones in the business district. The Chamber of Commerce proposed two-hour limits districtwide, but the idea was rejected for several reasons.
Larry Buhl signed with the St. Louis Cardinals affiliate at Decatur Illinois for the season. He plans spring training in Albany Georgia around March 95 and has been with Wayne State Teachers College this year. Buhl posted a .498 batting average as his Newman Grove team won 27 games and lost five.
David M Barton and Stanley W Barton report a uranium discovery on their 38 claims along the Dolores River near Uravan Colorado. They estimate ore already value 1 500 000 and foresee potential up to 50 million dollars in the Barton Uranium Co holdings.
The Cadman Hotel in Wymore was put up for sale after a plan to convert it into a modern hospital grew from a $75,000 estimate to remodel and equip at $220,787 plus a $20,000 purchase price. The project was halted as costs rose.
Mrs. P. C. Wieseman marked her 80th birthday with a family dinner at her Osceola home. Attendees included relatives from Des Moines Grand Island and local Polk County neighbors, highlighting her as a pioneer of the county.
County Agent Kenneth Schmidt of Osceola announced farm workers are needed for single and married men. Herman Eggert, Fremont Nebraska State Employment Service Farm Placement Rep, will be in Schmidt's office on Wednesday March 23 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with several good placement orders.
The family of Lew Miller gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Stratton on Sunday to celebrate his 80th birthday. Guests included Carla Sauter Carolyn Lee Arthur Miller Ronnie Clarks Lloyd Miller Raymond Patricia Laver Clyde Miller Shirley Bill Judith Stratton Osceola and many others with relatives from Grand Island Central City Columbus Lincoln and Osceola. The evening featured visiting and photography followed by lunch.

Donors of O Negative blood who answered a Red Cross plea during a Blood Mobile visit to Shelby on March 8 1955 received commendation letters from the American Red Cross regional office in Omaha. Twenty four donors—23 from Polk County and one from Butler County at Ulysses—were honored for aiding in emergencies including four Blue Baby cases.
The Jobs Daughters group will sponsor a paper drive this Saturday March 19 at 2 00 p m. A truck will be at the corner near Bush's Drug Store for waste paper collection. If unable to reach the truck contact Sonja Walker for pickup and proceeds will fund their activity expenses.
Mr and Mrs Lloyd Hahn and Natalie with niece Karen Stevens return from Monterey Mexico trip. In San Antonio they visited the Alamo and at Fort Worth met Mrs Jean Isham cousin of Mr Hahn. They describe June like weather in Texas and the border area with palm trees flowers and orange trees.
Catholics in this area and America will contribute next Sunday March 20 to a five million dollar welfare and war emergency relief fund. War Relief Services of the National Catholic Welfare Conference funds overseas aid in 31 countries and distributes U S Government surplus foods through local charities. Since October 1954 about 274,931,000 pounds of food clothing and medical supplies valued at over sixty six million dollars were sent overseas for distribution by Catholic Church agencies.
The Stromsburg Unit of the Polk County Farm Bureau will hold a meeting at the REA building in Stromsburg on March 25 starting at 8 00 p m Mr Neil Macaskey of Omaha will speak on the subject Farm Social Security Everyone is invited to the meeting.

Robert Bryan led Polk County with 94.50 bushels per acre at the 1954 National Selected Five Acre DeKalb Corn Growing Contest banquet honoring Nebraska champions. Runner up W James Brigham of Shelby and third place Robert L Tooker of Silver Creek followed with strong yields. Robert E Wieseman of Osceola also placed fourth with 85.77 bushels per acre.
Osceola Grades finish second in the Grade Basketball Tournament at Silver Creek, losing to St. Paul 54 to 35 in the final on March 9. Bowman led Osceola with 14 points in the final, while Red and Richards contributed in multiple rounds as fans applauded their late-season run and anticipate Bowman’s high school career.
Col Wayne L Creech wife Annette and parents Mr and Mrs Clarence Creech of Polk announce his return to the United States next month after serving in Germany with the 1st Infantry Division. Creech joined the Army in June 1953 and went overseas in December. Also noted is Pfc Robert Earl Johnson in Alaska hospital with pneumonia, receiving letters from Osceola friends.
Mrs. Clara Marks of Ord visited the Osceola Chapter on Tuesday March 15 for an annual event. Past matrons enjoyed a noon no host luncheon at Mrs. M A Mills home then a 2 00 School of Instruction in the Chapter rooms. Mrs Marks received a gift Carolyn Wieseman sang Only a Rose after the evening meeting and a reception and tea followed in the basement dining room chaired by Mrs Charles Fischer.
The Osceola $1.00 Store is near completion of a remodeling program. New service counters and shelving were installed, replacing old fixtures to permit better displays and improve appearance. Normal service will resume as the installation finishes.
Sports fans may buy All Sports Day tickets for the University of Nebraska event on March 26. The program runs all day with a football intra-squad game at 1 30 p m. Admission is one dollar for six events with proceeds aiding University athletes. tickets available at the Record Office or from Bert Gissler.
George Spitz a 30 year old Detroit resident driving two new cars for James E. Hamilton of Portland suffered a nervous disorder causing memory lapse while transporting rigs from Michigan toward the west coast. He was found near Osceola Nebraska and taken into custody by Sheriff Cornell. Spitz will be moved to the Veterans Hospital in Omaha for treatment. Bill Johansen agreed to help in proceeding to Portland after the incident.
The family of Mr and Mrs Wm McKeag gathered at the home of their daughter Mrs Gordon Fredrick for a Sunday reunion.
James E. Hamilton in charge of Pacific Fleets commends the Nebraska Safety Patrol officers who located his driver and rigs after a scattered cross country search. Trooper Willard Clark helped tow the abandoned car and helped recover the driver near Osceola. Hamilton travels hundreds of thousands of miles yearly and says the treatment was the best he has experienced. The piece also urges continued local building activity to maintain momentum in Osceola’s development.
