Iowa Nebraska Light and Power announces its ninth district rate cut since 1924. The schedule increases kilowatt hours per dollar for minimum use and introduces lower blocks for residential and commercial customers effective after March 25 with meters read after March 25 and bills from April 1 on.
Laura Irhoff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Irhoff, married Thomas Granger in San Jose California on March fifth. Laura grew up in Polk County trained as a nurse and served as Hastings visiting nurses superintendent before moving to California. Granger previously lived in Hastings and works in San Jose with an electrical appliance company. The couple will reside at 96 South 10th Street San Jose and plan a June trip to Nebraska to visit relatives.
Hedda Matilda Tillie 96 of Polk County died Friday after brief illness. Services were held Wednesday at Stromsburg Baptist Church with Gust E. Carlson officiating. She was born February 18 1842 in Sweden immigrated to Brooklyn in 1860s married A P Tillie in 1872 and homesteaded in Polk County before moving to Osceola. Survived by three sons Aaron David and Jonathan Tillie and two daughters Susana and Esther. Burial at Swede Home Cemetery after church services.
Sunday School at Valley 10 30 and Fairview 11 00. Rev Hamilton speaks at Fairview 10 00 and Valley 11 20. Clarks High School presents a one act play at Community Hall Fairview Monday March 21 at 8 00 p m Admission free. Ladies serve lunch after the program. Rev Hamilton pastor.
Mr. and Mrs. O. V. Hurst traveled to Lincoln on Sunday to visit their son Harry and his wife at their home.
Local Union Pacific agent S W Calhoun says that starting March 14 freight service on the Grand Island Valparaiso branch will run one train daily except Sunday. No 75 morning freight departs Valparaiso Mondays Wednesdays Fridays. No 76 evening freight departs Grand Island Tuesdays Thursdays Sundays. Reduced service reflects a long term drop in business with possible future resumption if conditions improve. Osceola and Stromsburg agents will be replaced as assistants were dismissed effective March 11 with extended hours.
The Utah supreme court affirms a prior ruling upholding Utica's occupation tax on bakery products sold wholesale by truck. Dale Rumelin challenged a $25 per day fine and demanded a jury trial, but the court ruled the fine was due to noncompliance and that city ordinance prosecutions are civil actions. The tax is $10 yearly or $1 daily.

The Methodist Church lists Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. led by Elton Berck, with Morning Worship at 11:00 a.m. and a sermon The Followers. Evening programs include Junior, Intermediate, Youth, and Senior Leagues with a basket dinner conference at noon. W.F.M.S. birthday party and Wesleyan Male A Cappella Chorus events are noted along with Bishop Oxnam's WOW Omaha radio spot.

Numerous local guests attended parties and visits through the week including anniversaries and birthdays, with residents from Stromsburg Osceola and Lincoln mentioned.

Plans unfold for the Fourth District Convention of the Nebraska Federation of Women’s Clubs to be held in Stromsburg on April 19 and 20. Host club is the Women’s Civic Improvement Club with a banquet tea and notable participants including author Bess Gerhardt Morrison. Local clubs assist with housing and cooperation from the Commercial Club.
West side notes report social events hosted by Swede Home families and groups. Activities include the Swede Home Farmers Union social March 25 with a program, Swede Home Ladies Club meeting, High Prairie Get-To-Gether at the school, Luther League gatherings with an Old Song Service, and multiple visits among local residents with birthdays and friendships noted.
The Pre-Contest Program to be presented March 29 will raise funds for the Fremont contest on April 1 and 2. It includes performances by Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs, the Mixed Chorus, piano vocal and violin solos. Admission ranges from ten to twenty cents and a full house is hoped for to fund the enterprise.

Mrs. C. E. Evan of Omaha visited Shelby relatives before traveling to Albion. Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Bemis drove to Fremont. Mrs. Bemis stayed with relatives. Melvin Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Brown, left Shelby hospital after recovery. Leon Hopwood welcomed a baby girl weighing 9 lb 3.4 oz born March 10 at Shelby hospital. Mrs. Carrie Cannon of Portland, Oregon, visited Shelby after sister Con Hewitt’s death. Homer Phelps and family brought home Mrs. Phelps’s mother and brother. Condon Construction and Babbitt Co. parked road grading and concrete gear for 6.6 miles of highway 16 between Shelby and Rising City. A baby girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Vinton Clark in Lincoln on March 9.
C M Humphrey of Osceola reports to Polk County officials that Polk County ranks second to Douglas County in Nebraska for highway first aid stations. The state has 44 stations as of January 1 1938, while Minnesota leads with 108. Baker of the American Red Cross commends county life saving efforts and urges further first aid promotion through schools to reduce home accidents.
Miss Louella Crow remains confined under Dr Alliband care and progresses as expected. Virginia Cook underwent appendicitis surgery by Dr Eklund on Saturday. Mrs Andrew Kropatsch, previously under Dr Alliband, has returned home. Mrs George Buchta was discharged Sunday. Mr and Mrs Lawrence Dravwal welcomed a seven pound baby girl named Barbara Jean born Sunday March 13. The infant was transferred to a Omaha hospital Monday for further care.
Two meetings hosted by Polk County Rural Electrification will take place at the high school auditorium in Stromsburg next Tuesday at 1 30 p m and 7 30 p m A Washington representative will explain potential uses of modern electrical appliances to the local community.
We learn of the death of Fred Schwab a longtime Osceola resident who died at 6 30 this Wednesday morning in Minden Nebraska He was wintering with a daughter in Minden and had been ill last week Funeral arrangements were not set at press time
Mr and Mrs Lester Berks return home from a wedding trip that covered Omaha and Iowa. Numerous local residents visit relatives in nearby towns and attend church, luncheons, and social events. The rain totals measured three fourths of an inch, while several families host and visit in Hordville Osceola and Aurora areas.
Paul Walgren had his tonsils removed by Dr Eklund Wednesday morning. Miss Susana Tilley of Sharpes Florida arrived to attend her mother A P Tilley’s funeral. Fred Schwab 81 died at his daughter’s home in Minden Nebraska where he wintered. No funeral plans yet. Women’s Foreign Missionary Society marks 69th anniversary at Methodist church next Tuesday with Mrs W H Clark in charge. Frank Mills Lloyd Cole hosted Forty-Niner's Bridge Club at farm home Tuesday. St Patrick theme and green white colors noted. Kenneth Cornish high score. Herman Anderson low. Mrs Pat Samuelson and Bob York return home after week here. Friday Frank Mills birthday party for Bob’s third birthday.
Osceola students present four one act plays across Freshman through Senior classes on Friday at 8:00 pm. The program blends comedy and drama with titles His First Shave Elmer and a mother child custody drama. casts include Derek Morton Susan John Harvey Harriet Thelander and others. admission 10 cents. Mr Bryant coaches.
Einer Swanson of Stromsburg converts Gilbert property in east Osceola into a tile factory from an old ice house and uses the former residence as an office. With growing road building, demand for road tile rises and Swanson plans to hire at least four workers as the project progresses.
Church Aid members enjoyed a cordial meeting and social at the Ben Schmoker home. Many local families visited relatives in Stromsburg, Weeping Water, and Lincoln while others hosted dinners and a Rope Club demonstration on knots and splicing. Notable notices include Burns family bereavement in Garrigan, N D, Shick Dry Shaver trainee Ray Burns headed to Kansas City, and several teachers practicing in local districts.
