Osceola voters at a Tuesday caucus unanimously nominated Mayor Sam A. Snider for re election. Snider has eight years as mayor and would begin a fifth term next May. Council nominees J A C Johnston W Fr Pierson city clerk Leroy Smith and treasurer Don Byers were renominated with little opposition. School board nominees Dr LeMar W O Hansen John J Anderson Joel Hansen were named for the three year term.

A hundred years ago next April 10 the first wagon train left St. Louis for Oregon opening the way for settlers to the Pacific states. President Hoover proclaimed April 10 to December 29 a centennial period with Nebraska joining the observance. The Oregon trail crossed Nebraska along the Blue and Platte rivers, with Milton Sublette leading the first wagon train of ten wagons April 10, 1830 returning with furs.

Seed Day Program Highlights County Agriculture Efforts
The Osceola Osceola County seed day event featured Prof F D Keim of the state agricultural college lecturing on noxious weeds and control methods. County Agent Kelly reviewed last year’s field demonstrations eradicating bindweed and Canada thistle and presented results from corn ear type tests showing smoother ears outyield rough ears. Mulch paper trials indicated slight yield gains for corn but reduced returns for potatoes. The Osceola Community Club hosted a matinee for attendees after the program.

A carload of choice seed potatoes from Box Butte county Nebraska began southward transport to Bermuda. The seed comes from Nebraska Certified Potato Growers Association stock and follows Nebraska’s large potato crop mostly marketed last year. Bermuda planters ordered a full shipment after testing Nebraska seed in prior years. Earlier shipments went to distant southern states and more recently to Oklahoma Texas and Arkansas.

The Fourth and Fifth Grades and three Department grades presented Penny Bang and Roses to a large audience at the high school auditorium Friday. Alberta Anderson as the Little Old Wife and Fred Green as the Beautiful Damsel sparkled in a Magic Oven tale aided by Eugene Buchholz as the Gry Gallant. The production featured bakers, Pierrots, and choruses with Ruth Miller directing and J. Carl Bryant supplying scenery. Monday’s encore performance raised 95 dollars for the program.
