Shelby youth injured in train collision at Columbus crossing
Paul Kuhnel 18, son of Mr and Mrs A E Kuhnel living near Shelby, sustained injuries to his right foot and lower leg after his car struck No 28 eastbound train at the Twenty third avenue crossing at 8 25 p m Saturday. Mary Ann Hoffner, the car’s other occupant from Columbus, escaped with bruises. Kuhnel’s car was carried 234 feet by the train as the watchman was on duty. Latest hospital report says he is progressing satisfactorily.

In Polk County last week a father of three service men died and within twenty four hours the three brothers, scattered across the United States, were on their way home. Telegraphs between local and national Red Cross offices moved quickly to arrange travel and support. The county’s second War Fund Campaign seeks 3300 dollars with 2300 for national and international activities and 1000 to fund local kit bags and garments.

Shearing School to Be Held in March in Polk County
Polk County will host a two day sheep shearing school in March, taught by Paul McDill, a Dawes county rancher and former vocational agriculture teacher. Ray L. Cruise, the county extension agent, reports the training will help boost wool supply for the armed forces as shearers are scarce. The course requires 12 hours, may run 10 to 4 over two days or include an evening session, and a minimum 10 in-school or out of school youths aged 17 or older may enroll with equipment provided at no charge. Interested attendees should contact Ray L. Cruise.

Philip Brazee, 32, son of Mrs. D. A. Brazee, Shelby High School class of 1928, entered the armed forces on June 24, 1942. He is stationed in Roswell, New Mexico, serving as a technical airplane mechanic after a five month training course in Chicago.

The Merry Dairy 4-H Club formed at Richard Merrick s home on February 24 with Richard Merrick as leader and Duane Gabell as president. Lunch was by Mrs. Merrick. Walter Carnine aged 65 and a longtime Polk County resident died suddenly at his Osceola area home Tuesday morning from a heart ailment. No funeral arrangements had been made at this writing.
