Miss Betty McMeekin of Shelby Nebraska earns the Danforth Foundation State award for FourSquare 4-H girls. She will travel to Camp Miniwanca near Shelby Michigan for a two week session July 31 to August 13 with 53 state winners for group study and activities.
Mr and Mrs Frank Klein have sold the Muse Theatre and the Gospel Ridge property to Mr and Mrs J B Logan of Lincoln. The Logans will take over July 5 and the Sun Theatre at Shelby is not part of the deal. The Kleins built the theatre into a premier local playhouse with remodeling and new equipment at substantial cost.
Osceola and Shelby both sit at 10 1 in the Mid Nebraska League after last Sunday's results. Playoff game to break the tie set for next Sunday at Osceola with 25 cent admission. Archer visits Osceola on July 4.
Communion services at Fairview Church have been postponed to next Sunday at 10 a.m. Mr. Hamilton will deliver a message and Sunday School begins at 11 a.m. He will also preach at Valley Church at 11:20 a.m. with Sunday School at 10:30 a.m. Miss Maxine Brooks of Osceola will play violin and Mrs. Elmer Horst will sing. Mrs. Roy Cox was released from the hospital after a week as a patient and returned home. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Bryan announce the birth of a daughter named Bonnie Dale on Friday June 23, weighing nine pounds. Mrs. E. L. Rogers anticipates release from hospital at week’s end after major surgery two weeks ago.
Six months after a blaze destroyed the Swede Home store it will reopen next Saturday. Three rooms in the Johnson residence serve as the new shop space with a full stock of groceries and general merchandise ready for customers. Further details appear in the announcement.
The Farmers Educational and Cooperative Union of Polk County met at the American Legion hall in Osceola on June 20 1939. Elton Berck opened the session. Agvall Torell spoke on leading the Y F D movement and a county picnic was approved on a modest scale. Homer J Young urged national cooperation. a Osceola quartet performed. refreshments followed.
The seventh annual Peter Peterson family reunion met in Stromsburg at Buckley Park on June 18. Mrs. Arthur Ekstrom was reelected president and Miss Lillie Chindgren secretary. 95 members with 70 present. A refreshment committee was named for next year. One marriage and three births have occurred since 1938, including Clayton Philimon Smith and Lynn Howard Peterson.
The Four Leaf Clover Cooking Club met at Genevieve Schott's home on June 20 with demonstrations by Mary Rose Schott and Doris Hennings. All but two members attended the June 16 judging at David City. Irene Augustin spoke on judging. A lunch followed. next gathering is July 11 at Dorothy and Helen Mae Deeter's home.

Arlene Steeple and Dr. Frank Travnicek were married at noon Monday in Omaha. The bride, a Osceola High School and University of Nebraska graduate, taught in Wilber. After a luncheon they left for a three week trip east via Montreal New York City and Washington D C. The High Prairie Homemakers met at Rose Mary Kahler’s home June 20 with Irene Forss visiting. next meeting July 11 at Zoe Ann Samuelson’s home.
Miss Jeanne Backlund wed Howard L. Peterson at Osceola Luth eran Church in a June 22 1939 ceremony. Attendees included relatives from Osceola Lincoln and Omaha with out of town guests from Oakland Ruth Peterson Pilger and York. The couple plans a trip to the Eastern States including the World’s Fair and Niagara Falls.
Paul Schneider of Pilger Nebraska serves as assistant County Extension Agent for Polk County in Howard L. Petersons absence. He graduated from the College of Agriculture on June 5 arrived in Osceola June 8 for about six weeks to assist farmers with problems.

West Side T C W club will meet Thursday June 29 with Mrs Axel Anderson for a pot luck lunch. Junior Choir practices Thursday at 4. Luther League hosts a program Sunday evening. Thursday visitors to Mrs Gust Chindgren were Rev Harry Lundberg from Protor Vermont. Families hosted at dinners include Russel Fjell with Denver visitors, and Aug Nelsons with Marjorie Polk. Verne Fredrickson visited Kearney and Loup City with Fern Schwietzer. Darlene Anderson of Gresham visited Frank Bolton home. Mrs Hugo Flodman of Andora Illinois visits Clarence and Herbert Flodman homes.
The Bright Side 4-H Club met at Marilyn Messing's home on June 14 with president Verona Bernt presiding. One member absent. minutes approved. visitors Dorothy Fozzard and Doris Jaax welcomed. They read the next lesson, planned two sewing contests, sang, and had ice cream and cake. Next meeting June 28 at Mrs. G. Augustin's home with Sewing Machine lesson.
Nebraska growers involved in the FSA rehabilitation loan program may receive released funds from grain sales to cover current harvesting costs. Walter W. Berck explains that funds from crop and livestock income can be released to debt payment, with conditions to limit outside labor and discourage speculation. Farmers should use cooperative marketing and verify mortgage status, while buyers are advised to check borrower and FSA joint payments and guard against unauthorized sales.
Miss Hattie Brown and Miss Dorothy Mason visited relatives in Nebraska before Brown toured South Dakota. Lute Carter prepares to leave for California with relatives hosting a picnic at Osceola park. Kenneth Mitchell, Oscar Fedde, and others visited the Brown and Messie families in York and nearby towns. several households hosted meals and guests from Chicago, Denver, Stromsburg, Rising City, and Shelby.
Mr and Mrs F B Kelly and family of Howard South Dakota visited Osceola last Friday during a trip to Ashland to visit relatives.
The Polk County Agricultural Conservation committee reports a surge in wheat growers expecting losses under all risk crop insurance. Pre harvest inspections are required for indemnification eligibility with 400 of 479 insured growers notifying for field checks. Early ripening prompted extra inspectors to assess heads not filling, reducing expected yields below 75 percent of normal.

Dr and Mrs Ord Pearce of Moscow Kansas visited Wesley Chapel last Sunday with Floyd West Ella Bates of Holdrege stayed with her brother Clarence Anderson and was driven to Fairmont by Mr and Mrs Anderson. Harvest is in full swing with some grain too short to cut and L E Treadway bought a combine last week.
Seventeen year old Letty Leigh McMeekin of Shelby earned three major stage awards for girls and was named best girl writer of 4-H club news by the Nebraska Press Association. She won the American Legion auxiliary essay contest and will attend a Michigan camp for two weeks as state winner of the Danforth foundation competition for four square 4-H club girls.
