George Kresha entered the U S Army on February 22 in Bakersfield California and is now stationed in the Hawaiian Islands. He is 30 years old, son of Adolph Kresha Jr and a Osceola high school graduate from the class of 1930.
County Treasurer Carleton Anderson reports over fifty thousand dollars collected in six months under the delinquent tax law. The rule remits all penalties on pre 1939 taxes but expires July 1. Taxpayers must settle before then to save money.
The American Legion Auxiliary held its final meeting at Mrs. Jack Malek’s home with Mrs. A. L. Chantry assisting. Officers elected for the coming year include Pres. Mrs. Flossie Deeds, Vice Pres. Mrs. Dwight Bush, Secy. Mrs. Carl Cederberg, and Treas. Mrs. Leon Merrick. The group continues collecting used phonograph records and playing cards for service members. A report on last year’s work was presented.
Carolina Timm daughter of Carl and Marie Brandt was born in Wheat Endorf Germany on May 3 1857 and died June 14 at her Osceola Nebraska home. She married Christopher Timm on October 13 1882 and had nine children. Surviving are eight children and numerous grandchildren. she was a longtime Methodist and Civil War veteran widow member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Women’s Relief Corps.
The Fifth Registration begins Tuesday June 30 1942 at 7:00 p m and closes at 9:00 p m All men born on or after January 1 1922 and on or before June 30 1924 who have not registered must comply Registration takes place at the local Draft Board Office in Osceola Nebraska Selective Service Board
Registrants completed physical exams on June 15, 1942 at Ft. Crook and qualified for general military service. Several have taken a ten day furlough before entering the army. About 255 of Nebraska's 30 000 young men aged 18 to 20 are slated to register this month in Polk county. Local board chairman W S Heitzman said one day will cover the county with registration from 7 am to 9 pm on June 30 at the Local Draft Board Office in Osceola. Eligible registrants must be 18 by June 20 but not yet 20 on January 1 1942. those under 20 in the armed services are exempt. Temporary county residents may register locally but must provide their permanent home address.
County Chairman Harry Pratt reports 54 168 pounds of rubber collected last week in Polk County including all scrap up to Tuesday morning. Largest contributor was H C Augustine of Shelby with 1800 pounds, while Osceola territory saw Leo Kresha 438 pounds and A E Swanson 560 pounds from Polk. The county aims for 77 025 pounds by June 30 with Stromsburg 15076 Osceola 13482 Polk 5984 and Shelby 5820 pounds collected to date.
The first annual Tenant Purchase picnic was held June 21, 1942, in Osceola City Park with sixty attendees. Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Leonard of Lincoln spoke after lunch. The group elected officers Trof Ostberg president Mrs. August Fischer vice president Mrs. Edwin Euse secretary treasurer.
The Polk County Mattress Center Project donated 420 yards of ticking and 225 yards of percale to the county Red Cross this week. Lacking enough cotton to make mattresses or comforters, the excess material was given to the local Red Cross organization.
Tena M Inness daughter of William and Mary Inness was born November 1 1913 in Shelby. She lived in Shelby through childhood and youth and was a member of the Shelby Methodist church. Diabetes struck at age 12, she faced illness quietly. She had recently begun a visit to Dayton Ohio when she became seriously ill on a train and died June 14 in Chicago. Funeral services conducted by Rev CG Norlin were held Thursday at the Shelby Methodist church with burial in Shelby cemetery.
Miss Emma Anderson and Miss Idenah Samuelson of Lincoln travel to Chicago on Wednesday for the Baptist General Conference with plans to stay about two weeks. They will also visit Mrs. E. Samuelson and Curtis at Oneida Tl. after their conference trip.
The Rainbow Cooking Club met at Maxine All’s home with all members and two visitors present. Plans were made to attend the 4H County Picnic. The next meeting will be at Phyllis Anderson’s home.
Polk County AAA polled residents on the wheat crop insurance plan and several farmers and local officials voiced support. They say the program provides essential protection against losses, helps cover debts, and offers peace of mind despite weather or pests.
Hail insurance offered at 5i per acre per ten dollars of coverage with no down payment. The note is carried through to September 1, 1942. P. A. Nelson or related party indicated.
Polk County Commissioners urge paying taxes delinquent for 1937 and before before July 1 1942 to cancel interest accrued up to March 8 1939. After June 30 the law ends and full interest accrues. Pay now to save money.
Osee Julana Davis Newcomer died June 23 1942 at her Osceola Nebraska home after over four years illness She was born April 13 1872 on her father Vinson Davis homestead southeast of Osceola She lived most of her life in Polk County raised seven children with husband Charles J Newcomer and left behind six surviving children and five grandchildren Funeral services were set for June 26 at the Osceola Methodist church conducted by Rev A W Lapthorne.
Jack Stanton of Stromsburg receives orders to report to the San Diego marine base and serve as a captain in the Marines. He plans to leave this weekend after a World War I enlistment ending with a commission.
The Osceola Garden Club entertained Stromsburg Garden Club at Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Locke's home with forty eight attendees. Guests viewed host gardens, admired floral and vegetable table decorations, and enjoyed a program including vocal and piano performances and a talk on Minnesota wild flowers.
The Stromsburg District Lutheran League holds a convention at the local church this Friday evening through Sunday with services scheduled Friday 8 30 p m Saturday 8 15 a m 8 30 p m and Sunday 10 00 a m 3 00 p m and 8 00 p m President Lauerson of Luther College will be the convention speaker Communion services follow Sunday morning The choir will practice Friday evening.

Carl Laska, 20, son of Mr and Mrs Stanley Laska, joined the Army Air Corps November 25 1939 and has been advanced to Corporal Second Class air mechanic stationed in the Philippines. He is a Silver Creek high school graduate, class of 1936.
Norfolk congressman Karl Stefan files for reelection. New Third District counties include Saunders Butler Seward York Hamilton Polk. Stefan rose as WJAG radio announcer and world series broadcaster aiding community listeners with receiving sets. He won 1940 by a large 80 000 vote majority.
Shortages in fuel replacements repairs and rubber drive a proposed rural truck program supported by the Nebraska Agricultural Extension Service the state USDA War Board and the Civilian Defense Council Extension Agent Ray L Cruise announced The Office of Defense Transportation is consolidating bus and freight lines and setting rules for carriers to conserve highway use Details on rubber shortages will be discussed with Victory Leaders in communities and farmers are asked to work out local arrangements to conserve truck facilities
Extension Agent Ray L. Cruise warns straw piles often fail to kill bindsweed on large or old patches. He notes straw decay fertilizes the patch and the ground absorbs rain, letting bindweed thrive. Sodium chlorate fails to reach roots when much of it is consumed by decayed straw.
