Emil Koziol joined the army in January and served at Camp Roberts California before being sent overseas. He is the son of Mr and Mrs J B Koziol.
Caroline Timm 85 widow of Christopher Timm died at her Osceola home Sunday evening. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Methodist church and burial was in Osceola cemetery. An obituary will be published next week.
Dr. Raymond I. Lindquist of Sumner Nebraska, a 26 year old minister, was ordained a Presbyterian on graduating from Princeton Theological Seminary and installed as pastor of the First Church of Orange New Jersey at an annual salary of ten thousand dollars. He later returned to Nebraska to speak at Peru State Teachers College, and is a cousin of Phil Nyberg of Osceola.
Arrangements are complete for a barley and oats variety demonstration at the Richard Boyd farm on June 20 at 7:00 p.m. Ten oat varieties and six barley varieties will be shown including Otoe Trojan Kanota Brunker Columbia Fulton Marion Boone Tama and an experimental oat. barley lines include Lice Flynn Velven Trebi Spartan and Short Comfort. Gilbert Webster of the College of Agriculture will discuss variety adaptation and attendees can inspect the plots three miles south and four and a half miles east of Stromsburg.
Mrs Inga Sophie Johnson born June 3 1858 in Sweden died June 9 1942 at Immanuel Home for the Aged Omaha age 84. She raised a large family on Nebraska farms near Swede Home Osceola and Stromsburg. Survived by two sons Oscar and Elmer two sisters three brothers and many grandchildren great grandchildren. Funeral at Kepner's Funeral Home conducted by Rev C A Sward. Buried Swede Home Cemetery.
Bernard Bennie Carlson 26, Osceola area, died in action likely during the Coral Sea battle aboard the carrier Lexington. Son of Mr. and Mrs J G Carlson, he enlisted in 1936 after graduating Osceola High in 1933. Survived by parents two brothers Evauld and Clarence both of Omaha and five sisters in the Osceola area. Community offers heartfelt sympathy.
Mr and Mrs Leonard Heimer and the Thelen youths Doris and Richard attended Laurence Welk and his orchestra in Schuyler Monday. At District 15s annual meeting Owen McClung was re elected director and at District 67 Leon Hopwood was elected moderator.
District 18 chose Lloyd Bernt for 18 and Adolph Micek reelected for 16 with Mrs. Glen Augustine elected in district 9. Visitors from Portland Boise Omaha Bakersfield Shenandoah and Columbus arrive for family gatherings and a St Joseph's ice cream social. An eye injury occurred during a ball game as Richard Korger was struck by a bat.

Miss Tena Inness daughter of William Inness formerly of Osceola died in Chicago Sunday June 14 at age 28. She was a niece of Andrew Inness and Mrs Wm McKeag of the vicinity. Remains were brought for burial and funeral services will be held today.
The Fifth Registration will begin Tuesday June 30 1942 at 7:00 AM and close at 9:00 PM All men born on or after January 1 1922 and on or before June 30 1924 who have not registered must comply Registration will be held at the local Draft Board Office in Osceola Nebraska Selective Service Board.
Polk County farmers join Dairy Herd Improvement and Junior Testing associations to track feed and test milk for butterfat. Frank Swanson Stromsburg C M Johnson Osceola and Lawrence Bryan Osceola have 28 cows tested. Arthur Deeter Shelby leads the Junior Testing group with a home testing machine. Roy Grossnicklaus has five cows producing 50.5 lbs butterfat. County agent Ray Cruise urges more farmers to test for butterfat to gauge each cow's value.

Distances included Glenn and Lohr families, McCormicks of Shelby and others. Mrs Ida Lohr visits Wm Dake and Fern. Dan Hayes and family picniced in Columbus with Louis Long of Ann Arbor. Billy Bryant visits grandparents while parents vacation in Colorado. Geo Buchta returns to Illinois after six weeks with Hilbert Buchta family.
The Nel son family enjoyed a Buckley Park picnic on Sunday. Out of town guests included Mrs. Russell Olson and daughter Jane Mrs. Ralph Tschauner of Tulsa and Claremore Oklahoma Mr. and Mrs. Glen Lindburg Genoa Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Nelson and family Wahoo and LaVona of Washington DC Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Twarling and daughter Ruth Frances visited Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Donels Sunday evening. Rev Gust E Carlson will attend Swedish Baptist conference in Chicago June 24 28.
N P Peterson a farmer living northeast of Marquette filed Tuesday afternoon for the legislature in the district comprising Hamilton Polk and Clay counties on the non political ticket.
Carl Holtorf purchased the 80acre improved farm at referee sale last Tuesday. The land lies one mile south and three quarters mile west of Hordville and attracted brisk bidding from several farmers seeking a home rather than speculation or investment.
Mrs Joe Lindblade Esel Helen Peterson born July 5 1888 in Moline Wisconsin died June 11 1942 aged 53 years 11 months 6 days. She married Joseph E Lindblade May 30 1906 and they lived on a farm northwest of Osceola. Survived by husband seven children two sisters three brothers and many relatives. Funeral June 14 at Stromsburg Lutheran Church conducted by Rev Alfred Trued. Interment Swede Home cemetery.
John M. Staroscik announces AAA loans available again for wheat barley and rye with rates set by grade No. 1 wheat 1.18 and No. 2 1.17 through No. 5 1.09 for Polk County. Two year loan option with one year renewal under certain conditions. notes at 3 percent interest mature April 30 1944. Barley and rye loans mature April 30 1943.
Wesley Chapel conducts a Bible School for children this week in afternoon sessions at the church. WSCS met last Thursday at Mrs Kenneth Richards home. July meeting planned at the Dawes home. Osceola Local Farmers Union voted last Monday to hold the next meeting in September. Strawberry patches yield a bountiful harvest of fine berries this spring.
Mr and Mrs Myron Johnson and their son visited Mrs Willard Anderson at Stromsburg Hospital on Sunday.
Albin Koziol of Osceola joined the army April 30 and was last stationed at Camp Robinson Arkansas. He is the son of Mr and Mrs J B Koziol.
Bill McGaffin AP reporter describes a freighter plane attack by an enemy fighter in the Asiatic war zone. The Texas pilot outmaneuvered the Jap and escaped with a few bullet marks as the carrier dived through a cloud bank. McGaffin learned of the incident after landing.
Plans finalize for the annual County 4 H picnic in Osceola on June 24 starting at 9 30 a m with a softball tournament among county clubs. A noon picnic lunch follows at the Osceola park then a free showing of Young American at the Muse Theater. M A Mills of Osceola will speak on 4 H members responsibilities in the war effort. Outstanding 4 H members and clubs will be honored and swimming at a reduced rate will conclude the day with free ice cream from the Osceola Chamber of Commerce.
WM. P. Conway, retired farmer and Shelby prominent citizen, died at his home Monday night June 8 1942 after a year and a half of failing health. Born March 10 1855 in Cherry Mound Allamakee County he came to Nebraska in 1877, later moving to Polk and Gresham areas, then Shelby in 1927. Survived by six daughters a son 13 grandchildren and several in laws. wife died in 1926. Funeral held Thursday at Sacred Heart church with high mass. interment in Shelby cemetery beside his wife.
