Circus Reading Drive Invites Young Readers

Librarian Miriam Carey invites children to a circus themed summer reading program with a 10 book quota from now to August 1. The program began last Saturday with many signups as the library decorates accordingly and mothers note children are normally quiet for short periods. Local item reports Osceolans Spc James Peterson and Spc Glen Schanon visiting West Germany with two Nebraska colleagues, Spc Paul Statz and Spc Dana Davidson, during overseas assignments.

Mosquito Spraying Planned Next Week By City

Mayor Dean Buffington told the Record spraying for mosquitoes will occur hopefully in the next week if weather permits. Residents should close windows for about 15 minutes during spraying and wash garden vegetables afterward.

Celebration kicks off Osceola Old Times Days June 29 30

Osceola's Chamber of Commerce and Community Club host a two day Old Times Days with a Tuesday schedule for youth including a parade contests races Teen Dance Soap Box Derby and Little Miss Contest. Wednesday features adult events such as horseshoe contest water fight and square dance plus a pancake feed by the Lions Club and a 3 to 4 pm museum showing. Merchants offer rides with five tickets for a dollar. Lisa Norton returns from a REA Washington tour with 26 Nebraskans and visits Wayne Lincoln family.

Karen Johnson Installed as Job's Honored Queen

Karen Johnson daughter of Mr and Mrs Vern Johnson of Osceola was installed as Honored Queen of Job's Daughters Bethel 61 at their June 16 meeting. Installing officers were Sally Mills Barbie Mills Pam Snodgrass Linda Gaedeke Delores Watts Karlene Watts Chris Mills Carolyn Hanson. A social hour followed with tables decorated in spring flowers and candles.

Lincoln Tele phone and Telegraph declares dividends

The Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company board at Lincoln on June 18 declares a 35 cent per share dividend to common stockholders of record June 30 payable July 10 1971. A 1.25 per share quarterly dividend on the preferred stock is also declared. President Thomas C Woods Jr notes continued growth in service and earnings for the first six months.

Beatrice Teacher Receives PTA Life Membership Honor

Mrs Derrald Tibbetts of Stoddard School honored as part of a group of Beatrice teachers awarded a state life membership for outstanding service to youth. Tibbetts is the former Ardis McMeekin of Osceola.

Osceola Pony Team Wins Two Baseball Games

The Osceola Pony squad hosted Waco on June 16 at the fairgrounds, winning 2 to 1 after Daryl Nelson hit a go ahead homer in the 4th. Osceola used strong defense in the 5th, with Mike Smith, Chester Graham, and Doyle Nelson providing key plays. The Pony team then traveled to Shelby on June 20, beating the Shelby Ponies while tallying 12 runs and committing 4 errors. They are set to host Benedict Ponies on June 26 at 7:00 p.m.

Osceola Midgets Split: 2 Games vs Waco and Shelby

The Osceola Midgets tied Waco 2 2 then lost 3 10 in Wednesday action. They won 7 6 at Shelby after trailing 6 3, then host Benedict on Saturday at 8 30 p.m.

Polk County 4-H Team Crowned Reserve Champion at Nebraska Clinic

A Polk County 4-H Livestock Judging Team led by Bruce and Mike Treffer Monte Gross nicklaus and Murray Schmoker earned Reserve Champion at the Nebraska Swine Judging Clinic in Grand Island on June 11 with 1 059 points. Bruce Treffer placed eighth in the senior 4-H division. Osceola beat David City 12 6 as Fullerton visits Osceola June 27. State workshop for county clerks and treasurers held in North Platte with participants Dale Frizzell and others.

Johnson named to Grand Office at Nebraska Job’s Daughters

K Johnson was named to Grand Office of the International Order of Job's Daughters at Dana College Blair June 17 19. Karen Johnson daughter of Mr and Mrs Vern Johnson will serve as Grand Senior Custodian. Installed Saturday at Blair Bethel No 61 of Osceola won the plaque for greatest membership percentage increase. Debbie Carlson received second prize for Grand Representative to Idaho. Eleven from Osceola attended Grand Bethel.

Cornhusker Boys State 1971 Session Report

Four hundred eighteen boys attended the 1971 Cornhusker Boys State in Nebraska. The daily schedule included city county and state government sessions, elections, court hearings, lectures on liberties, a 100 question exam, Capitol tour and farewell luncheon. Participants praise meeting peers from across the state and thank the American Legion for the opportunity.

Two Men Forwarded for Induction from Polk County

Gregory Linn Wilhelms and Ronald Duane Meerkatz were forwarded to Omaha on Tuesday morning June 15 1971 for induction into the Armed Services. Greg is son of Alton and (Mrs) Wilhelms of Stromsburg Nebraska and Ronald son of Clarence and (Mrs) Meerkatz of Polk Nebraska. Polk County Local Board No 75 has not received July calls yet.

Eugene Gabel was elected Grand Knight at the John F. Kennedy Council 5383 Knights of Columbus meeting in Shelby on Monday June 14. Bob Park Named New Parts Man At Lepp and Larsen

Bob Park is the new parts man at Lepp and Larsen. He and his wife Pat and their 10 month old son Robbie moved to Polk County from Jewell Iowa where he previously worked as parts man at Conaway Implement. The 1964 Webster City High School graduate enjoys guitar and fishing. They will reside in Shelby.

Centennial Book Committee to Meet June 25 at City Hall

The Centennial Book Committee will gather Friday June 25 at 8:00 p.m. in Osceola city hall. The first half of the book heads to printers in August and research is urged promptly. Members plan an information booth for Old Times Days and the County Fair and showcase a pictorial history with available slides.

Father Son Golf Tourney Lights Up Ryan Hill Nine

Fathers and sons enjoyed a morning breakfast at Ryan Hill Country Club before nine holes of golf for the Father Son Golf Tourney. Winners included Steve Monson for low score 38 and Jim Brigham closest to pin on No 2. Other honors went to Carl Johnson longest putt on No 6 and Steve Monson longest drive No 9.

Change of residences Mr and Mrs Darwin Hahn and daughter moved to the Si Cook residence near the Co op Oil station. Mr and Mrs Bob Johansen and three children from Beaver Falls Pa arrived in Osceola and bought the Robert Stohl house for the summer. Linda Heibel of Shelby omitted from Nebraska University graduates list with Elementary Education degree.

Girls Scout Delegation Visits Mexico and Our Cabana

A group of Shelby Senior Girl Scouts Jackie Smith Nancy McDonald Becky McDonald and Kim Wills joined peers from Prairie Hills in Omaha on a 13 day trip to Mexico. They stayed at Our Cabana International Home for Girls Scouts and Guides and later at Casa Guia in Mexico City with tours to Taxco and Cuernavaca.
