The Record urges readers to send copy by Friday as Mondays become law holidays and ads may incur postage charges after July 8. Also praises the refreshed south courthouse doors in metallic gold and the overall gleaming courthouse corridors and tax office.
Ruby Lewis and Lottie Miller face unemployment after selling the Idle Hour Cafe to Mr and Mrs Dale Lucas of Stromsburg. The pair started the business 14 years ago by buying City Cafe and later transformed Harold's Thriftway into the Idle Hour. Mrs Lucas, Joyce Morgan by birth, is Osceola connected and plans to employ her three teenage daughters.
Friday afternoon June 25 the Legion Club hosted an Auxiliary meeting and Girl's State Tea. Officers elected were Fern Wyman president Ruth Lux vice president Loretta Kresha secretary Mildred Sigler treasurer Elsie Davis chaplain Sandra Walgren historian Hilda Yungdahl Sgt at Arms. Carolyn Wieseman outgoing president chairs pages at North Platte state convention in July. Christine Kresha seventh grader earned honorable mention for an Americanism essay read at the event.
Contestants sought for an Auto Demolition Derby at the Polk County Fair in Osceola. Open to anyone with a valid license and a car they won’t miss, the event features heats and a feature race with cash prizes and trophies. Practice rules focus on safety, with the goal of surviving while others are eliminated. The derby is set for Wednesday July 21 at 8 p.m. entry details from Fair Secretary Ray Conrad.
Automobiles driven by Imogene Brigham and Joe P. Klaus collided Wednesday morning June 23 at an intersection northeast of Osceola about 1.2 miles north of Morris Richards place. Both were taken to Annie Jeffrey Memorial Hospital. The Brigham Plymouth 1969 was heavily damaged and the Klaus 1968 station wagon appeared a total loss.
Glenn Richards from west of town delivered the first wheat this year to the Farmers Elevator. He harvested a 2 acre patch that yielded 55 bushels per acre. The wheat tested 11.5 moisture and 61 pounds per bushel, reported as good quality.
Osceola Post Office designates July 1 1971 as United States Postal Service Day. Limited imprint ed envelopes with the new USPS Seal will be given out one per person and available as a First Day Cover with the U S Postal Service Emblem Stamp for 8 cents. A display of Historic Stamp Posters will be shown in the lobby.
Nebraska Public Power District completed a transformer changeout in northwest Osceola to handle extra load from air conditioning. Workers included Warren Campbell and Eugene James of Osceola, with Kenneth Wilson and Roy Barrett of York.
Osceola Midgets improve to 3–1 after a come from behind 13 to 9 win over Benedict on June 26. Osceola overcame 6 errors with 10 hits while Benedict had 5 hits and 1 error. Monson and Augustin pitched. Tenniges caught. Next games: July 1 at Gresham and July 4 at Polk at 7:30 p.m.
Donations from Martin Roberts Myron Jones and Phil Nyberg push the Ryan Hill Tree Fund to 758.50 supporting purchase of several large trees for the Club and funding a watering system. Contributions may be sent to Dean Henricksen at First National Bank of Osceola.
Polk County will be represented by three different senators after SB 954 splits the county into three districts. District 34 includes Western Polk, Platte, Pleasant Home, Merrick, Hamilton, Clay, and part of Nuckolls with Maurice A. Kremer of Aurora as the senator. District 24 covers Stromsburg and Hackberry with Walter H. Epke of York. District 23, including Osceola Shelby Island Clear Creek Valley Canada and Osceola townships, is led by Loran Schmit of David City. The change takes effect in 1973, with odd districts up for election in 1972.
Christina Anne Mills of Osceola is a Chapman World Campus Afloat volunteer. She will present a 27 minute color film Semester at Sea about the spring 1971 voyage aboard the shipboard campus and offer literature on itineraries courses costs and financial aid to groups. She is a sophomore at Stephens College and can be reached at 402 747 2701.
Osceola Pony team remains undefeated with a 9 run, 9 hit performance vs Benedict. Daryl Nelson pitched a one hit shutout through five innings with 13 strikeouts over 17 batters. Redman hit Benedicts lone homer and 4 Benedict errors aided the win.
Mrs. Jack Tindall appears on the spring President’s Honor Roll at Platte College. Bruce Alt of Shelby and Loren Oberg of Stromsburg earn places on the Dean’s Honor Roll for the same term. In summer enrollment, Susan and Marie Banks of Clarks join Platte College, along with Donald Brigham Barbara Potter Pat Tindall Osceola Judith Schott Silver Creek Aurelia Alcorn Cindy Alt Bonnie Brigham Steven Hopwood Kathleen Krumbach Clyde Reichwein Peggy Trout Shelby Dale Donelson Ann Ellis and others.
The Osceola Lions Club completed plans for a Day Pancake Feed at a June 28 meeting. Proceeds benefit the Nebraska Lions Eye Institute. They also discussed a possible historical marker for Osceola's 1972 Centennial and cleanup around the old marker site.
W John Nyberg of Polk Nebraska and Duane Lindblade of Osceola Nebraska receive Certificates of Service from the Nebraska State ASC Committee. Nyberg has 15 years on the Pleasant Home precinct committee, Lindblade 10 years on the Osceola precinct committee, both serving part time as field employees alongside their committeeman roles. Precinct committeemen renew annually. Nyberg has been elected 15 times, Lindblade 10 times.
Auditions for the Venita Rich Talent Contest Revue run July 12 at the Polk County Fairgrounds 4-H Building from 2 30 to 9 p m. All ages and talents invited.
