Farmers Union County Meet ing will be held at Osceola High School Auditorium Friday even ing June 18th. A good program has been arranged. All members and friends are invited. Refresh ments will be served.
The Stromsburg and local Garden Club members met Tuesday evening June 15 at Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Locke home for a lawn party and garden viewing. Lulu Ward presided. 40 attendees named flowers. program featured piano duet vocal and readings. birthday gift of burl sprout from California noted for Mrs. Etta Conn.
Ruth Swanson daughter of Stromsburg and Merle Luft Osceola were wed June 15 at Fremont Methodist parsonage in a double ring ceremony by Rev A V Hunter. The couple plans a Minnesota trip then residence in Columbus.
Osceola lost 17 to 4 at Utica last Thursday with most runs unearned as Sutton met them on their home field Sunday, where Osceola led early and never trailed. Blessie Henggler and Sterup led Osceola at the plate. Schmoker Mickey and Lamb contributed hits. Attendance was strong as Osceola sits at 3-2 in league play after a 5-4 season opener against York.
Osceola hosts a donkey ball game sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce drawing about 1259 attendees. The C of C team and a farmer team tied 6 to 6 in the fifth inning after baby burros carried runners home. one player, Carl Wieseman, suffered a broken shoulder blade. Proceeds fund a barbecue dinner for Polk County Soil Conservation Day on July 23.
District No 18 residents Mr and Mrs John Gonka and Ted of near Duncan visited the John Micek home on Monday. Orville Enyeart and Earl traveled to Omaha on business and Sunday guests joined Homer Ingalls near Shelby. The Micek and Mayberger households hosted several visitors from Norfolk Shelby and Columbus area during the week.
The Most Rev. Erling Eidem Archbishop of Sweden will arrive in Omaha June 18 as part of a King Gustaf V delegation. Prince Bertil heads the 36 year old delegation to preside at the Swedish Pioneer Centennial on June 19 and 20 at Elmwood Park. Governor Val Peterson and W. O. Swanson urge Nebraskans of Swedish descent to attend the festival, with gymnastic and folk dance acts. over 10 000 are expected.
The Osceola Midget ball team will play at Osceola Ball Park at 6 30 p m on June 11. No admission charge. Everyone is invited to watch.
McCormick pitched a no hit no run performance as Osceola beat David City 5-2 to gain a second league win. Osceola led 1-0, David City surged ahead 2-1 on sixth inning errors, then Osceola struck for four runs in the seventh to seal the win. Attendance was mainly locals from Osceola with a town game next on the schedule.
Lincoln field office manager Joseph S. Sewall stresses graduates who have never held social security cards must contact the 215 Post Office building office to obtain numbers. Employers often require the number for employment and proper wage reporting. duplicates are available and must reflect the original number. Office hours are 9:00 to 5:00, weekdays, phone 2-6414.
Local Ford dealer Bob Sigler announces the 1949 Ford is an entirely new model with redesigned interiors and exterior colors. The car features textured fabrics in gray tweed, green broadcloth, mohair options, simplified instrument cluster, black lighting, reduced chrome trim, larger rear window, deeper windshield, and roomy seating for six. Public display set for Friday, June 18.
The Neal Stages run daily trips from Osceola to Omaha with tickets on sale at the Corn Palace Cafe. A single round trip is made each day between Osceola and Omaha.
The city council warns it is illegal to sell or discharge fireworks before July 1 and after July 5. Citizens are urged to obey the law to avoid trouble by order of the city council.
Mr and Mrs K L Fellers of Butte Nebraska plan to move their jewelry business to Osceola this spring renting the former Osceola Cafe building. They will remodel the room to house their stock and have contracted to buy a home here with their seventeen month old daughter Delia Ann and Mrs Fellers mother joining them.
The St Francis Hospital Auxiliary will meet next Monday evening June 21 at the home of Mrs. D T Kelley.
Miss Anna Mytholar, a Shelby school teacher, died Sunday after a car overturn east of Seward following an off road incident near a bus. Her brother and his two daughters were passengers. Burial services were held at the U B Church in Shelby. The obituary appears next week.
A one point seven three inch rainfall last Friday brings relief to farmers in the region. Corn shows strong growth, oats recover, and wheat improves after earlier damage. Gardens and potatoes gain from the moisture, easing crop concerns across the territory.
Nebraskas State Council of Home Extension Clubs held a three day session in York June 9 10 and 11 with over 650 women registered. About 20 Polk County members attended while 438 dined at a banquet in the new auditorium. Highlights included talks by Anna Dee Weaver Dr E L MacQuiddy and Mrs R L Gustaveson plus choruses from Dodge Saunders and York counties and evening talent shows. The next Polk County Extension meeting will be July 12 at Mrs Alfred Grossnicklaus home. Pest control notes address aphids and use Black Leaf 40 spray. demonstration continues on the back page.
Theo Hanson, formerly in York, is appointed Superintendent of the Osceola district for Consumers Public Power District replacing Al Chantry who resigned to join the state as safety director of the R E A. Hanson will relocate with his family to Osceola and has long service in electric utility work.
Red Cross swimming classes begin June 28 at Osceola Pool and run through July 9 for Osceola and Shelby youths aged eight and up. Applications available at the pool or Matt's Market in Shelby June 21 to 25, due by June 26. Instructor Dorothy Stever returns, noted for prior successful sessions.
June wedding at the Methodist Church unites Lois Chantry daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A J Chantry and William Skog son of Mr. and Mrs A L Skog of Fargo North Dakota. The ceremony featured Rev G A Randall, organist Mrs F W Schumann, and soloist Marlene Johnson. Reception followed with a buffet at the bride’s parents home and a two week trip to Minnesota before settling in Lincoln.
