Robert B. Campbell of Westwood California was elected president of the American Booksellers Association at the Chicago convention. Gertrude M. Alt 51 died Monday evening May 31 1948 at the home of Mr and Mrs Wm Jaax after a heart ailment and a night stroke. Born July 19 1897 in Shelby she married Adolph Alt September 27 1920 and had a daughter Thrasilla Kubicek and a son Delmar. Survived by husband daughter son three sisters and five brothers and many nieces and nephews. Funeral at Sacred Heart Church Shelby June 3 1948 with burial in Shelby Catholic cemetery. Pallbearers named Quinten Jaax Winnard Augustine Wallace Glatter Walter Glatter Frank Eller Jr George Eller.

Fire was discovered around ten o clock Thursday night at Ray Brantings store. Firemen moved the truck to the street and extinguished the blaze after a short circuit in the truck wiring caused the fire. Only the truck was damaged.

Welfare staff tour state programs and prison visit
The Polk County Welfare Department staff visited Lincoln to learn about the State Department of Assistance and Child Welfare. Mrs Prince outlined the Board's role and arrangements were made for an afternoon prison tour. Prison population stands near 750 with a prewar high of 1000 and daily growth at about 24 percent.

Devastating Hail Storm Crosses Polk County
A severe hailstorm swept Polk County Sunday evening around 7 30 damaging wheat crops across the county from Clarks to the valley north of Osceola. Hail up to eggs in size and heavy rainfall caused widespread crop losses, with oats and wheat hit hardest and corn battered. Reports say hail damage was extensive in the Kresha and Wieseman area and adjusters were expected to assess losses.

Waterways Seeding Plan Outlined For Fall
Early spring rains showed erosion damage and ragged gullies on unprotected land. The U S Soil Conservation Service recommends a four step method: prepare a saucer shaped gully bottom, apply heavy manure or straw, seed quickly with sudan or small grain, then seed grass into the stubble after hay harvest while preserving the sod. Red Cross Swimming Lessons At Osceola Pool
