Grasshoppers Trapped On Cars To Save Polk Crops

Farmers in Polk County report heavy grasshopper damage to alfalfa and corn. A car mounted trap system collects hoppers, funnels them into kerosene, eliminating pests as field crews drive slowly across fields. Osceola Lumber Company in Osceola sells the devices.

Osceola residents are invited to Ak-Sar-Ben races and the Den Show Monday June 21. Tickets are available from ambassador Raymond Kepner. Delegations from 23 communities along the Union Pacific main line will attend, with Spanish War Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars delegates present. Special races honor these groups, and the seven race program begins at 2 15 p m.

4-H Judging Day Sets District Meetings At Aurora and David City

District judging days for 4-H club members and leaders will be held in Aurora on Thursday June 17 and in David City Friday June 18 both at 9 30 a m. Polk county 200 club members are invited to participate in practice work at both meetings.

They plan a June 23 wedding at the bride’s home with a lakes trip honeymoon and will reside in Ainsworth where Anderson coaches athletics. Marjorie is Osceola HS and Univ of Nebraska alumna. he is Wayne State Teachers College and Univ of Nebraska graduate. The Sturdevants are longtime former residents.

Osceola Pool Opens with Strong Attendance

The Osceola swimming pool opened on Sunday to enthusiastic crowds with season tickets sold to residents of nearby towns. Manager Lester Peters oversees the facility with Margarite Hartman Walter Calhoun and Bob Mills assisting. The pool emphasizes strict sanitary conditions using chem chloride treated water similar to drinking water. It is noted as one of Nebraska's finest pools and over $100 in admission tickets was collected Sunday.

Rev Herrman Embarks on European Vacation

Rev. MattheW Herrman of Cincinnati leaves New York on the S S Columbus June 5. He tours Westminister Abbey Buckingham Palace and visits Germany Austria and Switzerland. He aims to return in late July sailing Europa and resume duties at Bethesda Home For The Aged after twelve years as superintendent. He is well known in the region and brother to A J and W J Herrman of Osceola.

Pioneer Resident of Polk County Expires Saturday

Frederick Merrick of Polk County died Saturday at his Osceola home at age 72 years 9 months 20 days. Born in Meaford Canada on August 22 1864 he came to Nebraska in 1871 and homesteaded on the Blue River near Osceola. Survived by wife Isabelle Moore five children two churches and one brother I J Merrick. Funeral Monday at 2:30 at the Methodist church with Rev A C Monkman and Rev W W Hull officiating.
