Farmers in Polk County report heavy grasshopper damage to alfalfa and corn. A car mounted trap system collects hoppers, funnels them into kerosene, eliminating pests as field crews drive slowly across fields. Osceola Lumber Company in Osceola sells the devices.
West Side families hosted and visited in Osceola with numerous Sunday dinners and calls. Delegates attended the Luther League Convention in Salem while synodical events drew Helen Pierson and Lillie Chindgren to Omaha and Omaha events.
Mrs. J. T. Bonner of Columbus, longtime Osceola resident for forty years, is renewing acquaintances with former friends in town this week. The visit highlights social ties and local recollections from past years.
The Free Mission Church held a surprise party for Nels and Martha Hall to thank them for faithful service as church caretakers. A brief program in the church parlors preceded a token remembrance. Community members and church affiliates attended and extended appreciation.
Osceola residents are invited to Ak-Sar-Ben races and the Den Show Monday June 21. Tickets are available from ambassador Raymond Kepner. Delegations from 23 communities along the Union Pacific main line will attend, with Spanish War Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars delegates present. Special races honor these groups, and the seven race program begins at 2 15 p m.
District judging days for 4-H club members and leaders will be held in Aurora on Thursday June 17 and in David City Friday June 18 both at 9 30 a m. Polk county 200 club members are invited to participate in practice work at both meetings.
Mr and Mrs Lyle F Holm of Osceola plan to move to Polk as soon as suitable quarters are found. He represents Monarch Health and Accident Insurance Company and is described as a young man of pleasant bearing.
Sunday dinner guests were Mr and Mrs Clarence Bryant of Polk visiting the Morgans in their home.
Mrs M S Sturdevant of Lincoln announces the engagement of her daughter Marjorie to Donald H Anderson of Wayne. They plan a June 23 wedding at the bride’s home with a lakes trip honeymoon and will reside in Ainsworth where Anderson coaches athletics. Marjorie is Osceola HS and Univ of Nebraska alumna. he is Wayne State Teachers College and Univ of Nebraska graduate. The Sturdevants are longtime former residents.
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd C. West announce the marriage of their son Lawrence P. Davis to Louise Lafferty of Humboldt. The ceremony took place in Omaha on June 12, 1937, with family in attendance. Louise is a Humboldt High School graduate. Lawrence, Osceola High School, later employed in soil conservation and at an Omaha baking firm.
Miss Harriet Smith daughter of Mr and Mrs Bert Smith and Carl Johnson son of Mr and Mrs Ed Sam Johnson wed at the Methodist parsonage in Columbus on Saturday June 5 with Rev Andrew McFarland officiating. Mrs Johnson graduates Osceola High School class of 1928 and has taught in Polk County rural schools and near Genoa. The groom attended Stromsburg High School and is a farmer. They will reside on a farm west of Osceola.
The marriage of Miss Frances Dunn daughter of Mr and Mrs W F Dunn and Mr Garrold Anderson son of Mr Ernest Anderson was solemnized last Thursday June 10 at St Paul Methodist Church in Lincoln Dr Walter Aitken performed the ceremony Miss Laverne Anderson sister of the groom and Morris Dunn brother of the bride were attendants After a short wedding trip the couple will live on a farm west of Osceola
The Osceola swimming pool opened on Sunday to enthusiastic crowds with season tickets sold to residents of nearby towns. Manager Lester Peters oversees the facility with Margarite Hartman Walter Calhoun and Bob Mills assisting. The pool emphasizes strict sanitary conditions using chem chloride treated water similar to drinking water. It is noted as one of Nebraska's finest pools and over $100 in admission tickets was collected Sunday.
Mrs Sylvia Fillman hosted a 1 15 oclock luncheon at the State Reformatory for Women in York Nebraska Friday June 11. The in mates program was presented and all departments were visited with several guests from Osceola Bradshaw Chicago Lincoln and York among attendees.
Rev. MattheW Herrman of Cincinnati leaves New York on the S S Columbus June 5. He tours Westminister Abbey Buckingham Palace and visits Germany Austria and Switzerland. He aims to return in late July sailing Europa and resume duties at Bethesda Home For The Aged after twelve years as superintendent. He is well known in the region and brother to A J and W J Herrman of Osceola.
Mr and Mrs Clayton Rystrom attended a Tuesday evening gathering in Siremeburg honoring Mr and Mrs Ed Lunner of Chicago. Hosted by Mrs E Lunner, the event brought local friends together for a social in the honor of the guests.

Art Buchholz family moves to John Duran residence in south Shelby. Dean Ruth to move to Birth farm after harvest. Sacred Heart Church holds two weeks vacation school led by Sisters Beatrice and Clare from Algoma. The Alt family visits Sidney then returns home. Miss Bess Ringer of Lincoln visits. Elizabeth Longacre to Lincoln Business College. W F Crozier of Stapleton stops at Alonzo Merrick home. they were returning from Lincoln. Wm Blum and A H Kuhl groups visit A A Blum home. one member stays longer. Dr A J Merrick returns to Fremont after days with family. Sacred Heart youths picnic at Pawnee Park with Rev O Boyle. Verne Cook hosts neighbors in honor of S N Stalnaker who leaves for San Diego to visit his son Mark.
Agricultural Agent Kelly announced a soil conservation tour for farmers and others June 23. Polk county residents meet Soil Conservation Service representatives in Dav id City at 10:00 a.m. The CCC work and contour and terrace projects will be shown, with family picnics en route. the tour ends at 4 p.m.
Luther Church notes 50th anniversary observances for the Immanuel Deaconess Institute in Omaha with Immanuel Lutheran delegates Claus Anderson and Otto Olson. Activities include Luther League 8:00 p m Tuesday at the church, Synod in Omaha, and various church events this week.
Frederick Merrick of Polk County died Saturday at his Osceola home at age 72 years 9 months 20 days. Born in Meaford Canada on August 22 1864 he came to Nebraska in 1871 and homesteaded on the Blue River near Osceola. Survived by wife Isabelle Moore five children two churches and one brother I J Merrick. Funeral Monday at 2:30 at the Methodist church with Rev A C Monkman and Rev W W Hull officiating.
Mr and Mrs Edmund Lunner of Chicago visit Stromsburg with relatives while Mrs Lunner hosts a 24 guest luncheon. Kathie Lou Grabill stays with grandmother in David City as Eva Olson returns to Lincoln City Library duties. Visitors include A V Kjelson family in Gothenburg and Dr M D Eubank of Kansas City.
Guests at the Gilbert Johnson home on Sunday were Mrs Ed Westring of Lincoln, Mrs. J. S. Hansen of Clearfield Iowa and Miss Eleanor Highland of Grand Island.
