Memorial Day Services Draw Large Osceola Crowd

A large crowd gathered in Osceola for the annual Memorial Day services after a damp weekend. The day featured a parade of veterans and youth groups, a program at the high school with speeches and readings by M. A. Mills Jr and others, and a cemetery decoration effort by Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls. Out-of-town attendees included families from Scottsbluff, Grand Island, Omaha, Lincoln, Moline, Boise, Hastings, Fremont, Columbus, and several other cities, assembling for the remembrance event.

Polk County Project Clubs Host Spring Tea in Stromsburg

About 170 women from Polk County attended the May 25 Spring Tea and Bread Demonstration at Stromsburg High School. Clarice Bloom demonstrated sweet dough and bread enrichment while the program featured singing, piano solos, readings, and a tea with guests Florence Atwood and Mrs. George Irland. Prizes included four pans of sweet bread and a door prize. oldest and youngest mothers were noted alongside long-distance attendees.

AAA reports progress in Polk County soil programs

A 1947 AAA report shows 549 Polk County farms implementing soil and soil building practices with 667 participating farmers. Contouring and terracing were popular, with 4 495 acres contoured, 40 731 feet of terraces built, and 3 594 acres of green manure crops plowed under. Additional measures included strip farming and irrigation preparation. Farm plans for 913 farms have been signed for 1948, with expectations for greater cooperation.

The city volunteer fire department elected Herman Bohl as president Philip Nyberg as secretary treasurer James Gibbins as chief Dale Lewis as first assistant Raymond Branting as second assistant and Mark Gustafson as third assistant at Thursday night’s meeting The group plans to ring the fire bell a half hour before meetings as a warning to all firemen Osceola residents are told not to panic when the bell rings at month end it is only summoning members to the regular monthly meeting.

Farewell Sermon for Rev Randall Ends Osceola Pastorate

Rev G A Randall delivered a farewell sermon to a large Methodist congregation. He has served 35 years in the ministry and will move from Osceola to Stromsburg, planning full-time ministry at both charges. The Randall family bought the Sturdevant property on Gospel Ridge to make their home. The annual conference is in session with future Osceola appointments to be announced Sunday.

Shelby Legion Sponsors Hospital Care For Local Blue Baby

The Shelby American Legion sponsors a fundraising campaign to send Jerry Filling Jr the one year old to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for a rare heart operation. Funds are needed quickly within two weeks to cover surgery costs and travel. Contributions may be sent to Blevins Pharmacy or A. M. Pokorney, Shelby Nebraska, with a show and dance also planned to boost donations.

Gloria Peterson Weds Co L Haggstrom in Los Angeles

Gloria Peterson daughter of Mr and Mrs Enoch Peterson of Polk and Orville L Haggstrom son of Mr and Mrs Gust Haggstrom of Ft Lupton Colorado wed at the Little Church Around the Corner Los Angeles on May 15 1948 in a white ny lon crepe gown with a three strand pearl necklace. Attendants were Kenneth and Mrs Haggstrom in Hollywood. After a reception relatives only the couple departed for a Bear Lake honeymoon. they will reside in Los Angeles where Haggstrom works as an accountant with Associated Oil and Mrs Hagström previously trained as a stenographer.

County Rural Youth Organizes in Osceola Nebraska

About 30 county youths met at the Osceola high school auditorium to organize a county wide youth group. Officers elected were Paul Walgreen president Harold Klingman vice president Dorothy Brigham secretary Anabel Mytholar treasurer Robert Tooker news reporter. Following a business meeting a folk dance recreation and refreshments session was held led by Don Monson. Members urged contacting the Extension Office for membership and announced a June meeting on the 21st.

Tragic Car Crash Claims Mrs. Stevens Near Polk

Mrs. Robert Stevens of Lincoln dies from injuries after a collision on the old highway between Polk and Stromsburg. Her husband and their two year old daughter survived with minor injuries. driver Harry Wilson was uninjured. Mrs. Stevens died at Stromsburg hospital shortly after arrival.
