Osceola opens its pool for the season next Saturday offering a free swim for all. Cecil DeLand leads this year’s operation with season tickets pledged, prices set for children and adults, recent repairs completed, and gates opened to admit 240 thousand gallons of water.
The Osceola Garden Club met at the C. A. Frasier home to discuss Lincoln Garden Show notes by Miss Rilma Johnston. They plan summer flower exhibitions in Osceola using shop windows on Wednesdays and Saturdays with entry tags for flowers and owners. The next meeting will be in two weeks with Miss Macve Moore.
The annual Children’s Day program at the Presbyterian Church is set for Sunday June 11 at 10 30 A M A pageant The Castle of Life will be presented by the Sunday School children The program conveys a lesson about each child building a castle of life through story and song
Fairview and surrounding areas saw visits from Arnie Mace and daughter from Chambers, Guildford Bryan family from Central City, and Rev J F Runnels of Gretna. Local gatherings included a moonlight party near Silver Creek Bridge and a Platte River picnic hosted by C O Carlson. Families from Benedict Polk Silver Creek Columbus and tableland joined as guests or participants.
Dr D J Smith of Osceola announces that on and after Saturday June 10 Dr Harley S Eklund will be associated with him. Eklund born and raised in Polk County near Gresham Nebraska is a University of Nebraska Medical College Omaha graduate who recently completed 18 months of interneship at Immanuel Lutheran Hospital Omaha with focus in surgical training. Dr and Mrs Eklund and their year old daughter Joan have rented the George Campbell home in this city.
A fire destroyed the John Sutke farm home eight miles southeast of Silver Creek on Monday evening. Mr and Mrs Sutke were at home. their son Chiors was in the Yield. Neighbors offered aid but the house could not be saved. No insurance. clothing and keepsakes are lost. A five dollar birthday gift found in a tin box will be sent to Washington for possible replacement. The Sutkos plan temporary housing on the farm.
A Saturday event showcased Alex Swanson demonstrating a small tractor engine hitched to a line of coaster wagons and then a six cylinder Chevrolet. About seventy five autos and around three hundred spectators observed the display, with pictures taken for later display at L A Erickson Jewelry. Swanson also ran a tiny electric plant and offered prizes for photo submissions.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the Methodist Church in Osceola for William J. Query who died Friday night at Osceola Hospital from heart failure. Burial was in Osceola Cemetery. Survivors include children J. J. Query Orni Fellows Roy Query and others. He married Cora McDonald in 1882 and was the last survivor of eight siblings.
The Board of County Commissioners will sit as a Board of Equalization on June 13 14 and 15 to equalize discrepancies in Real and Personal Property values. John W Fillman County Clerk.
G T Ray models the newest fashion in eyewear with bold rimmed glasses. The overhauled frame design emphasizes modern lines and a retro influence.
Stromsburg organizes a Twilight baseball league to play at Buckley Diamonds every Tuesday and Thursday evening. Four local teams will feature about forty eligible players, with managers drawing names to balance rosters. Bleachers and a backstop are planned for the diamond.
Osceola defeated E. A. Barbers 13 to 2 while Silver Creek routed Stoner 18 to 13. Valley beat Polk 7 to 5 and Swede Home won 3 to 5.
The Query children express sincere thanks and appreciation to friends for kindnesses and sympathy during the illness and death of their father William J. Query.
Nebraska sets a 275 quota for veteran forestry camps with World War veterans at 256. Remaining spots go to veterans from the Spanish American War, Philippine insurrection, Moro expedition and Boxer Rebellion. Applicants must have wartime service, be US citizens, unemployed, physically able, and of good character with three-fourths of $30 monthly allotment for dependents. Selections start after June 12 with conditioning camps and final enrollment by June 2.
Farmers and stockmen across the Omaha market area are invited to join the United States Live Stock association at no cost. The national movement, organized in Kansas City, aims to represent 80 to 85 percent of U S stockmen and includes leaders from Nebraska Iowa Missouri Arkansas Illinois Kansas Oklahoma Texas Wyoming and South Dakota. membership is open to individuals associations or corporations aligned with agriculture and livestock welfare.
Two Polk county students received degrees at the University of Nebraska Lincoln commencement held Monday June 5 as part of about 840 graduates. Marjorie Rystrom of Stromsburg earned a Bachelor of Science in education and a teacher's certificate, while Frank Scholz of Shelby earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration.
Polk County plans its first annual Old Settlers Picnic and Homecoming in Osceola in August. Andrew Nuquist Jr. chairs the committee as volunteers enlist county old-timers to invite former residents back to reconnect and contribute photos and letters if unable to attend.
State banking superintendent E. H. Luikart reports Nebraska banks improved since year start with an estimated 25 to 30 percent stronger position. All banks under cut restrictions are solvent and improving. collections rose after the bank holiday as Farm Holiday groups largely withdrew opposition to depositor claim collection. There are 249 unrestricted banks and 171 under restrictions.
