John Ekstrom 12, son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Ekstrom, was struck by a bat behind home plate during a Clarks ball game. He suffered severe facial injuries and possible eye loss, rushed to Grand Island then Omaha for care. prognosis pending.
Polk County rechecks 362 government loan cribs of sealed corn. Three inspectors sample each crib and test moisture at the State ACP office. moisture varies little since sealing. Total sealed corn tallies 148 655 bushels with loans totaling 84 733 35 dollars at 57 percent per bushel. Robert C. Taddiken notes allotment drive for 1940 wheat and urges written requests for farms with no wheat planted in 1937 38 or 39.
The Polk County Farm Bureau announces a Women's Speaking Contest with prizes of 10, 6.5, and 2.5 dollars. Open to federation women over 25, 900 to 1200 words memorized, July 7 county contest. District August, State during State Fair week. last year's winner Mrs. Glenn Hill. Entries may obtain guidance from the Osceola Agricultural Agent.
The Bright Side 4 H club gathered at Rita and Grace Bernt’s home with 11 members including new entrant Mary Ann Staroscik. Verona Bernt led, needle case lesson read aloud for next time on hand towels, judging teams named, pin cushions judged, songs sung, lunch served, and next meeting set for June 14 at Marilyn Messing’s home.
The Osceola Junior Baseball League defeated Stromsburg 15 to 14 in the season opener last Wednesday afternoon. Players in action included Leon Carman pitcher Wesley Parks catcher Warren Umshler 1st base Junior Hotchkiss 2nd base Raymond Crossant 3rd base Jack Hastings shortstop Wayne Parks right field Sam Byers center field and Dean Everetts left field.
The County Board of Equalization will hold sessions in the Commissioners' Room at the Courthouse in Osceola on June 1 4 and 15. John I Anderson County Clerk.
The Polk county farm debt adjustment committee with the Farm Security Administration has paid 1,688.86 in back taxes to County Treasurer LeRoy Smith since October 1 of last year. Forty-seven debt burdened farmers and creditors have reduced indebtedness by 17,296.49 through extensions, interest cuts, and debt adjustments, aiding local farmers and businesses and benefiting the community over time.
Eldena Johnson visits from Rawlins before Lin coln summer school while Lulu Wolfe from Omaha stays with her daughter in Stromsburg. Nearby families host guests at multiple homes including Johnsons, Allinders, Peters, Wentz, Morgan, and Schmoker with several Sunday dinners and a funeral attendance noted.
Mrs Anna Mattie and Mrs John Groff of Detroit left Wednesday for home after visiting at the Rectory. Lady Loretta Jaax graduates at St Bonaventure Academy in Columbus and will join St Marys hospital in Columbus as secretary. Families from Shelby Spalding and Columbus attended various gatherings and visits across the week.
The Methodist Church announces a full Sunday program with 10:00 AM Sunday School led by El ton Berck and 11:00 AM Morning Worship featuring the sermon The Mighty Mite. Evening activities include 7:00 PM Junior high league 7:30 PM Senior high league and 8:00 PM Official board meeting with the Preparatory Membership Class. The W. H. M. S. meets with Mrs I J Merrick on Tuesday afternoon June 6 led by Mrs Moore.
A pretty May 23 wedding united Zola Frizzell and Cedric Finecy with Rev. W D Hamilton officiating. The couple will honeymoon then settle at the groom’s Polk county home after a short trip.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Creemen visited the Tom Meacham home and plan to travel to California Monday with Ray Norris and Miss Hazel Norris who seek employment. A list of local come and go includes Rev. E B Maxcey of Inman, Forrest Graham of Nance Co visiting grandma, and multiple families attending weddings, picnics, and trips through the week.
A group of friends and relatives enjoyed a Sunday picnic supper at Kenneth Peterson’s home. Several local families visited one another, including Hearless hosting the High Prairie Club on June 2 and multiple neighborhoods sharing Sunday meals.
Mr and Mrs Vance Marquis of Omaha were guests in the home of Mr and Mrs George Craven on Sunday. The Marquis couple expect to move to Kansas City in the fall.
The St. Andrew's choir hosted a mis cellaneous pre nuptial shower Sunday afternoon at the Adolf Kresha Sr. home for Barbara Cerny. Blue and white decor featured miniature umbrellas. Ann Cerny led games. Esther Messing won a wedding contest prize. A lovely lunch followed with 16 guests at a long table and a umbrella centerpiece.
Miss Anna May Myers daughter of Mrs Alfred Grossnicklaus wed Norman E Bradley son of Mr and Mrs T W Bradley of Denver Colo The ceremony was in Valley church on Sunday May 28 1939 at 2 pm Rev W D Hamilton officiated Immediate family attended and a luncheon followed The couple were escorted by Mrs Donal Wieseman and Ernest Bradley The bride wore a floor length white silk marquisette gown and carried a bouquet of summer flowers Mrs Wieseman wore teal blue with a floral figure The bride is Osceola high school graduate and has been employed in Denver for five years Mr Bradley a Denver University School of Law graduate works in private practice in Denver They will reside in Denver Mr and Mrs Bradley were at home to friends at the Alfred Grossnicklaus home on Monday evening.

Miss Barbara Cerny and Lester Anderson will be married at St Andrews church in the valley on June 1 1939 with Father Mattie officiating. Attendants include Miss Elsie Cerny Miss Geneva Cerny Victor Cerny and Gary Altmanshoffer. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs John Cerny of the valley and will reside in Osceola after the ceremony. The groom operates a barber shop in Osceola and the couple will make their home there.
DeLoss Buchholz expected to be released from Osceola Hospital later this week. Mr and Mrs Morris Richards welcomed a 5 1/2 pound girl born Friday May 26. Mrs John Kampovitz of Shelby was a patient several days last week. Mrs Harold Johnson and Mrs Joe Schott were released last week. Mrs Walter Umshler remains confined this week for medical care.
William Herrmann of Osceola a senior at the University of Nebraska Teachers College was approved as physically fit to enter the Air Corps training bases. He was one of 14 men to undergo a very rigorous physical examination.
The Nebraska Council of Home Demonstration Clubs meets in Fremont June 8–10 with over 1,000 homemakers expected including Polk County delegates. Speakers include Miss Mary Rokahr and Mrs. Lydia Ann Lynde of the U S Department of Agriculture. theme Desirable Homes Gilt Edged Investments.
About 60 attendees at Osceola Park honored Mr. and Mrs. Royal Gibson and guests from Clarks. Jennivee Cook, ACP and Farm Bureau former secretary, plus Lloyd Adelson and Walter Kohl relatives were praised. Gifts included an electric waffle iron and a pewter crystal tray set. Attendees created a bride’s scrapbook page for the keepsake.
The High Prairie Alumni reception was held Saturday evening May 27 in the High Prairie auditorium. President Gordon Fredrickson called the meeting, the school song was sung, a short business meeting followed, and officers for the coming year were elected: Pres. Walter Stohl, Vice Pres. Vivian Larson, Sec Treas Genelle Coover, News Reporter Sylvia Johnson. The program included a welcome by Fredrickson, a vocal solo by Genelle Coover, and a piano solo by Alice Oberg Tate. Members of the class of 1939 were initiated into the Alumni, followed by lunch.
The Lutheran Church announces the Ladies Aid meeting on Thursday hosted by Mrs. Dora Burgeson with Mrs. E E Nyquist arranging the program. Trinity Sunday services are planned with Sunday School at 10, morning worship at 11, and evening worship at 8. The Luther League will lead the evening service. A church picnic is set for June 6 at Osceola Park with a 12 noon dinner. attendees should bring covered dishes.
