Pvt Bud Deeds enlisted in December 1940 and has served on the west coast for a year with the Medical Division at Stockton California. He is the son of Mrs Flossie Deeds and a 1940 Osceola High School graduate.
The Swede Home Junior Choir presents a sacred concert Thursday evening August 6 at 8 30 p m at the Swede Home Church. The program features scripture prayer hymns solos duets trios and quartets with a reception on the church lawn afterward.
Polk County War Board launches an intensive scrap drive from July 19 to August 11. Five county banks donate 50 dollars for prizes at the Farm Day finale during the county fair, with volunteers urged to haul scrap to smelters and contact board chair Robert C. Taddken in Osceola for pickup.
An Osceola-Omaha picnic for former Osceola residents in Omaha gathered last Sunday at Spring Lake Park Pavilion. Invitations reached 68 and 46 attended with a supper served. Miss Ethel Thelen of Columbus spent Sunday with her parents Mr and Mrs Herman Thelen. George Island and Arlois joined a Grand Island trip to visit J B Rogers. Eugene Reisdorff under a doctor's care for a sore foot. Friends attended the shower dance for Ruth Urban and Gerhart Lux at Eilers hall. Rosie Beebe of Shelby stayed a few days with daughter Mrs George Island. Local youths attended the parish picnic at Center last Sunday.
Greens Chapel notes 10 00 worship service sermon Going Out Coming In church school 11 00 visitors welcomed. Local families and friends travel to Lincoln Deshler Beatrice Columbus Kearney and Cortland for institutes picnics and visits. Rev Albrecht of Cortland to serve as Navy chaplain.
The Wesley Chapel Congregation plans a joint quarterly meeting at the Shelby Methodist church next Sunday evening with Rev. Story presiding. Local social notes include Lula Burns entertaining the Wesley Chapel Club and many visitors from nearby towns.
Mr and Mrs Richard Mattison and Mr and Mrs Hal Fellows of Genoa were Sunday dinner guests in LeRoy Rhodes home. Caro line Rhodes returned home with the latter for a week visit. Mrs LaVerne Dake went to Omaha for major surgery. Zetha Norris visited family in Central City. The G P Mace family hosted Kansas guests early week. Helen McCormick and relatives visited Grand Island. Rex Dake stays with grandparents Wm and Mina Dake during mother's hospital stay. Calmar Dunn and Mina Buchta shared Sunday visits.
Rev. Charles Hawkins of Omaha will lead services on Sunday August 2 at Fairview at 10 a m and Valley at 11 20 a m with a brief business session after Valley. A 3 p m business conference follows at Fairview. Shingles and paint are purchased for church repairs and workmen will start soon. Mrs Wieseman and Mrs LaVerne Dake are in hospitals with recovering health. Rev W D Hamilton pastor.
The August calendar for the Muse and Shelby theatres will appear in the paper. Manager Chantry asks patrons to cooperate by clipping and hanging the calendar for reference. The schedule for August lists all shows at both venues and will be published in the paper’s last week of July.

Private F C Leo Richter aged 23 son of Mr and Mrs Herman Richter entered military service August 1 1941 and is currently stationed at Bowling Green Virginia.
Mr and Mrs Lloyd Bernt and Fern were honored at a birthday supper at the Adolph Bernt home. Dr and Mrs P W Elliott of Columbus stayed Monday night there. Miss Frances Lassek and Alta Micek visited Columbus and Mrs Frank Lassek in St Mary's hospital with a hip fracture. The Micek crew finished threshing Friday. Rain fell Saturday afternoon with hail. A lightning strike killed a cow on John Micek's farm. Bill Lassek and family of Omaha visited Frank Lassek Sunday. Alta Micek joined Mr and Mrs Pete Seherger to St Josephs to visit Ferdinand Alt and Mrs Walter Nebosis of Minnesota. Edward Isko drove to Silver Creek to visit friends Orville Enyeart and Earl of Omaha and Imma Enyeart's mother Mrs John Bernt in Columbus.
Joe Chantry engines a weekly program at the Mouse Theatre named Take a Chance Nights on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Admission is 5e for children and 1e for adults and students, with unadvertised showings and a chance to see top Hollywood studio pictures.

The Polk County Junior Fair Board lists officers including Mary Ann Staroscik as president and Paul Walgren as vice president. It describes the board as a training auxiliary to the Senior Fair Board and notes a large 4-H exhibit with 44H members finishing home economics and preparing livestock. On August 12 a grandstand program with quizzes, music, skits, demonstrations, a dress revue, and a parade featuring 100 4-H beef and dairy cattle will close the fair.
