National Touring Company presents Jesus Christ Superstar with five Nebraskan performers and Bob Welstead arrangements at York City Auditorium on July 31 and August 1 1971 at 8:00 p m. The 95 minute concert aims to provoke thought on Jesus as a man through music and verse drawing crowds from churches and families.
An open house for the Golden Wedding of Walter White and his wife will be held from 3 to 5 PM on Sunday August 1 at the United Methodist Church in Shelby. The couple requests no gifts.
Six Polk County farm families received the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award at the Polk County Fair on July 22, 1971. Recipients included Wescoat. Cadwell. Johnson. Smith families. Hughes. Wisely. Shockey. Dunn and Dunn relatives. The award, co sponsored by Ak Sar Ben and the Nebraska Association of Fair Managers, honors farms in the same family for a century or more.
Osceola Midgets defeat Shelby 4 to 2 on Saturday with all runs in the first inning. Osceola had 4 runs on 6 hits, 2 errors. Shelby 2 runs on 4 hits, 1 error. Bill Peterson pitched. Mark Tenniges, Logan noted. Next games include Benedict Sunday and upcoming Little Six League tournament in Waco mid August.
Mrs. Robert Wieseman Mrs. Francis Urban and Mrs. Allan Kresha attended the Department Convention of the American Legion Auxiliary in North Platte from Thursday to Sunday. Wieseman served as chairman of the Pages.
Keith Miller among pull winners as tractors and drivers from Nebraska and Iowa competed at the July 20 Polk County Fair Tractor Pull. First place trophies and cash prizes ranged from 10 to 50 dollars for the top finishers in multiple weight classes including 5 000 and 7 000 pound hot rod and stock divisions with winners from Scribner Columbus Osceola Norfolk Gibbon and nearby towns.
A two day Appaloosa Horse Show drew about 150 entries on Saturday July 24 at the Polk County Fairgrounds with Miss Paula Person of Columbus crowned NAHC Queen and a western family style dance. Sunday’s Point Show in Nebraska attracted 227 entries from Nebraska and nearby states with local placings including Amigo Patric third in 1969 stallion class Huck Rowan owner Polly Crawfish fourth in 1969 filly class Mighty Wolf fourth in aged gelding class Dick Watts owner and Dick Miller owner. Judges were Gary Boyer Faucett Missouri and Harry Jackson Gower Missouri.
Allyn Leimser won first place in the Polk County Fair Talent Show with a yodeling number and earned a spot on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour in New York after the rain interrupted competition in the 4-H building. Barbara Mills named to Grinnell College Dean's List for outstanding academics with a 3.5 GPA or higher.
Navy Midshipman Nicolas J. Stas, husband of former Miss Nancy J. Johansen of Osceola Nebraska, serves summer training on the San Diego based guided missile cruiser USS Chicago off the Southern California coast. He trains in tactical maneuvers communications engineering and combat in formation center familiarization as a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps member at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
Drug charges were filed against Don Bittner 24 of Columbus and Matthew J Krueger 20 of Columbus. Bittner was released on a $1000 bond for possession of marijuana and possession of stolen property from a Platte County investigation dated July 22. Krueger is charged with distributing and delivering marijuana and remained in custody in Osceola with a preliminary hearing set for August 30 in Polk County Court.
The former District Superintendent for the Methodist Church, Rev. Max O. McCamley, will fill the pulpit at First United Methodist Church in Osceola on Sunday August 1. He has been on disability leave since a 1970 heart attack. The Truman Bachenberg family is on vacation. AT GUARD CAMP Gary Gustafson Jon Hiemer and Michael Larson attend National Guard Camp at Fort Carson Colorado. Members of the 67th Support Battalion at York left July 21 and will return August 7.
Osceola defeated Columbus 4-1 and Garland topped Wilber 10-2 in opening round State Semi-Pro play at Stromsburg. Columbus scored its lone run in the 9th on a walk and two singles. Osceola plated all four in the 4th. Osceola also beat Humphrey 5-4 in 10 innings in Central Nebraska League play to remain 9-1 atop the league standings.
Two Polk County children Sally Fleck of Stromsburg and Michael Lyons of Silver Creek will join 38 campers at the Nebraska Easter Seal Society Camp for Crippled Children and Adults near Fairbury for a 10 day session starting July 27. Camp director Gary Corn says activities include swimming hiking archery arts and crafts softball cookouts and boating and fishing with 25 trained counselors a crafts specialist a water safety instructor and on site nurse and on call doctor. Sessions also planned for teens and adults while last year saw 107 handicapped Nebraskans attend.
Employers face a key tax deadline on August 2 1971 as Social Security and withheld income taxes for the June 30 1971 quarter are due. Richard P. Vinal Nebraska district director notes reporting and payment on pre addressed Form 941 mailed by IRS. If the full liability is deposited on time with a Federal Reserve bank or designated bank the return may be filed by August 10 1971. Four Osceola High School graduates Lynn Boden Richard Wyman Bob Gissler and Cal Coffin earned scholarships to South Dakota State College for football and academics. Boden Wyman and Gissler accepted and report to Brookings August 22 with Boden and Gissler studying engineering and Wyman pursuing agricultural studies. first game September 11.
Osceola Pony team hosted Shelby at the fairgrounds on Saturday July 24 winning 11 to 6 for their 8th win. The game was tied 4 4 late before Osceola scored seven runs while Shelby added two. Osceola had 11 runs on six hits with four errors. Shelby six runs on five hits with three errors.
Colonel James E. Kruger announces Nebraska State Patrol invites young men to explore careers at Lincoln headquarters or Troop offices in Omaha Norfolk Grand Island North Platte and Scottsbluff. Applicants must have a high school diploma at least 5'10" tall aged 21 to 35 pass a merit council test then a formal application follows. Training and pay details outlined with early 1972 assignment readiness and six months in service training plus ongoing raises. Kruger praises applicant quality and public service commitment to Nebraska citizens.
Gleim finished first and Bernt second in the Demolition Derby at the Polk County Fair on July 21. Heat winners earned trophies and 25 dollars, with final competition prizes of 200 dollars for Gleim and 100 dollars for Bernt. An official from the Department of Labor will hold a session at the Polk County Welfare Office on Tuesday August 17 at 1:30 p.m. Mr Barnes can be reached at 747 5351 that day.
Mrs Helen Merrick of Osceola was hospitalized at Annie Jeffrey Hospital Monday evening July 26 after a one car accident on a county road east of Osceola. Sheriff Reynold Peterson reported the 1966 Chevrolet left highway 81, rolled onto its top in a ditch, with damage estimated between 800 and 900 dollars.
