The Record notes the death of Msgr Obrist and offers sympathy to his family and parishioners. The Centennial Book Committee asks for pictures and information on Dr S O Whaley Dr Holly M Mills Lou Israel Rev James Query and W P Clark. They request old stereoscope or street scene photos for Osceola and plan to press the first half this month. A committee meeting is set for Saturday August 7 at 8 p.m. at City Hall.
Erwin Matulka, a Valparaiso area farmer and secretary of Nebraskans for Nebraska Soil and Water Incorporated, announces his candidacy for the 23rd District seat held by Loran Schmit. He cites community service in the Legion, Knights of Columbus, school board, Kiwanis, and Agnew Cooperative board as background and vows personal outreach to voters.
Osceola Pony team captures first place in the Little Six League tourney at the fairgrounds diamond last week. Waco finishes second, Gresham third. Osceola defeats Shelby 4 2 in the semi final and Waco 2 1 in the final. Osceola 11 1 season, Midgets 7 2, and rest of details list players and managers.
Osceola exited the State Semi-Pro Tournament at Stromsburg after two losses, 7-4 to Bayard and 6-5 to Garland. Garland then upset Papillion 2-1 to force a title playoff. Central Nebraska League schedule notesOsceola postponed Columbus-Osceola game and plans makeup with Silver Creek Thursday, David City Sunday.
Gary Waller was elected a member of the Osceola Volunteer Fire Department at their meeting last week. Any man living within the city limits and 21 years old or older may apply for membership. Applications are available from any member.
Wake is set for Wednesday August 4 at St Vincent Church Osceola with a 7 30 pm wake and 8 pm rosary. The body lies in state from 7 pm Wednesday. Funeral Mass Thursday August 5 at 10 am at St Vincent's with an additional Mass Friday August 6 at 11 am at St Anthony Steinauer. Burial in Steinauer. Msgr L F Obrist 63 died Tuesday in a Minneola Kansas hospital.
Thirty one students will enter kindergarten with classes divided into morning and afternoon groups. Several Osceola households moved last weekend or are planning moves. Warren Chrisman and wife relocate to Vida Reckmeyer property on the Ridge. Bernard Walford bought the Gary Conrad home. Elmer and Mrs Piper move near the Redwood Motel. Jerry Jones and son depart to Des Moines for VA Adjudications work. Howard Daily family moves to Norfolk for Walnut Grove job and Pierce Public teaching. Leroy Flink family moves from Stromsburg to near Osceola High School.
The Osceola Board set school start for Aug 30 with full day instruction and a hot lunch price of 40 cents per pupil. They approved tuition for out of district students, contracts with other districts, and building plans, with football events on Sept 10 and Aug 17 meetings.
Nine year old Lisa Davis daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Davis of Osceola sustained a fall at home Monday and was hospitalized in Omaha for observation. Doctors later announced a concussion with tests continuing while Mrs Davis remained at her daughter's side.
Day Camp operates this week for Osceola and Shelby area girls. Mrs. Derald Abbott directs 62 girls and 19 adults at the Marak farm with Mr. Abbott assisting. Camp runs 8:30 to 1:00 daily and Thursday extends 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. for a Parent's Night program.
Marie E. Raeder, a Social Security claims representative from Lincoln, will visit the Osceola Courthouse on Wednesday August 11 1971 from 9 30 to 11 30 a m. She will discuss telephone claim options and mail return of completed applications. Call 475-3581 for details.
Dale Lewis and his son Jim announce a move from Sinclair to Mobil for their service station. The Lewis Mobil Service will retain the same customer service while undergoing painting and renaming this week.
Midshipman Gerald J. Cerny son of Mr and Mrs John Cerny Osceola Nebraska participates in an eight week summer training aboard U S First Fleet ships off the West Coast and Hawaii. The program aims to provide practical shipboard experience linked to naval command and management studies. A 1970 Osceola High School graduate.
Max Quick of Stromsburg and Elbert Smith of Lexington were announced Sunday as the first two members of Nebraska Semi pro Baseball Hall of Fame. Dr. Bob Prokop announced the honor in Stromsburg during the annual tournament. Quick was among 10 nominees and was a leading pitcher and hitter after World War II.
Osceola High School band starts practice Monday August 16 at 8 30 p m. Freshmen and members report to the auditorium. Evening sessions run each day that week except August 17 due to a football meeting. Week of August 23 practice moves to mornings after football. Students absent should mail excuses to Rex Cadwallader Osceola.
The Osceola School System lists the 1971 72 faculty for the grade and junior high schools and the high school. Names cover kindergarten through 12th grade, with subject assignments for each teacher and the superintendent Virgil Bugbee. Special education staff are Geraldine Atkins Miriam Mietzner and Carol Hansen.
Osceola volunteers were called Saturday noon to Floyd Emmons farm north of Osceola where a tractor ignited. Emmons was near the machine when flames broke out. he suffered burns to his head face and arms. The fire damaged the tractor’s electrical system and the cause remains unknown.
Mrs. Burnell Schulz of Norfolk died Monday. She was the mother of Mrs. Ron Christensen.
