Osceola defeated Silver Creek 5-1 in Central Nebraska Baseball League action on Sunday. Marion Bernt and Bob Prokop combined for the three hit win while Rex Grossnicklaus caught for Silver Creek. Gene Kula and Gary Oakeson were Silver Creek battery. Stromsburg to host state baseball tournament July 24 at Buckley Park with Warren E. Johnson and Dr. E T Parminter as co-directors. Nebraska Lincoln summer commencement honors over 450 graduates
More than 450 students received graduate and undergraduate degrees and certificates during summer commencement at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Chancellor D B Warner conferred the degrees with Joseph Soshnik presiding and introducing the charge. Dr. C Peter Magrath served as master of ceremonies. The graduates included Marvin Christian Carlson of Osceola with a Master of Science and Gloria Peterson Parde of Stromsburg with a Bachelor of Science.

Polk County pioneers honored for 100 years of ownership
Six Polk County farm families received the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award at the Polk County Fair on July 22, 1971. Recipients included Audrey M. Wescoat Samuel J. Cadwell Minnie M. Cadwell Morris C. Johnson Jacob P. Smith Martha C. Smith Henry C. Hughes Elizabeth L. Wisely Fern E. Shockey Charles Dunn Calmar Dunn Lewis C. Dunn. The award honors farms that have remained in a single family for a century or more, sponsored by Ak-Sar-Ben and the Nebraska Association of Fair Managers. Cadwell family history describes homesteading 160 acres in 1867 near Eagles Island, now Silver Creek, with the original 20 acres still used as pasture.

New state bans flotation devices at select recreation areas
The Game and Parks Commission adopted a ban on flotation devices at Branched Oak Wagon Train Pawnee Louisville Fremont Wind mill and Mormon Island state areas. Devices like inner tubes air mattresses inflatable chairs become illegal once in water. Since 1965 six Salt Valley Lakes drownings linked to flotation devices prompted the rule. The panel also outlawed minibikes and similar unlicensable vehicles on state areas under LB 644.

Storm Damage Across Platte Valley After Severe Storm
Elgin Tonniges reported about 30 percent corn loss in one field from Saturday night’s storm. At the Tonniges place, damaged limbs and a steel grain bin rolled into a ball were noted. Tornado like winds, rain and hail struck farms along the Platte with extensive corn damage. A hail storm in Boone and Nance Counties caused corn to suffer near total loss in wide strips with stones as large as hen eggs.
