Nebraska Coal Fever Through the Years and the Honey Creek Mine

A historical sweep shows early coal fever in Nebraska with bucketfuls found near Florence in 1955 and eight southeastern counties reporting paying quantities by 1870. By 1872 mines operated near Plattsmouth and other towns, a 1872 Pittsburgh-promised strike site, and 1874 northeastern sightings. The 1906 Honey Creek mine near Peru produced 200,000 tons before the vein ended. The 1967 geological survey and Hayden's cautious verdict contrasts with public skepticism and continued searching for commercial coal.
