Old Settlers Picnic Planned for Osceola August 9

Preparations under way for an Old Settlers Picnic in Osceola on Friday August 9 with a fast ball game an address by Hon Edgar Howard of Columbus free swimming a pavement dance and races with prizes. Residents should register at the courthouse lunch baskets coffee and cream to be provided.

Mowing Of Weeds Is Urged Now In Pastures

Nebraska agriculture officials urge Polk county farmers to mow weeds now to revive pastures damaged by drought and over grazing. Field tests show mowing during peak weed blossoming weakens roots and reduces seeding, with fall annual weeds like Downy Brome and Little Barley noted as poor pasture value.

Julius Nebosi¢ and son Walter accompanied Clayton Rystrom to Sehuvier on business Friday. A baby son was born to Mr and Mrs Albert Bernt at St. Marcs Hospital in Columbus on July 17 but did not live. threshing outfits are active with 10-15 bushels per acre. A St Andrews church benefit picnic was held at Ellers Hall pasture with ice cream and refreshments.

Missionary meeting and social visits in Polk area

Local residents attended a Swede Home missionary meeting on Saturday afternoon. Numerous visits followed at family homes including Reebs and Garling, with gatherings in Stromsburg and Central City area. A tractor injury occurred near Clark with Frank Foesburg receiving stitches.

Arrange Pro gram For County Fair

Secretary Jay Hastings prepares the county fair program ahead of the August 27 opening. Indications point to a stronger fair with free acts and more acts to be added. An improved public address system will reach all grounds and flood lights will brighten the amphitheatre area at night. Races are expected to surpass last year with several thoroughbreds moving into the county. Exhibit space calls rise daily and all spaces may be filled by entry day.

Appeals to Supreme Court over family loan notes

F N Larson appeals a Polk county judgment of 6102 dollars issued to his sisters Ellen Shenk and Hannah Fightmaster who claimed notes assigned by their father N A Larson. He alleges the assignment and signature were obtained by artifice and that the father borrowed 22000 from a federal land bank with a plan to distribute cash to the daughters and cancel the notes as a gain to the son.

Obituary of H. A. Hansen at Elk Horn Nebraska

Funeral services for Hermann August Hansen were held at the Lutheran Church in Elk Horn Nebraska with burial in Prospect Cemetery. The 71 year old, born in Marne Germany, died of pleuro-pulmonary disease at his son Frank Hansen's home in David City after a period of ill health. He resided in Elkhorn Osceola Albion and David City, married January 17 1888 to Franke Wicht, survived by five children William O Hansen Mrs C B Hall Frank Adolph and Elmer C Hansen and several grandchildren. He leaves brothers Otto of Tilden Theodore of Omaha and sisters Alma Hansen Mrs Henry Bickel and Mrs Charles Koch.

Polk Mail Carrier Dies At Hospital

Clyde Stevens aged 35 rural mail carrier at Polk for more than 15 years died at York Hospital after an appendicitis operation. He entered hospital Friday and remained in serious, semi conscious condition until death. Survived by widow Elsie Stevens two sons and his parents Mr and Mrs William Stevens and several brothers and sisters. Funeral arrangements pending. Archie Stevens a cousin served as substitute carrier.

County Dads Consider Plan Of Relief

The Polk County board discussed continuing the government relief contract but adjourned without action. Since last July the county has spent over 22 000 for relief, not counting federal funds. Critics say local control would cut costs, while harvest labor demand alters relief needs and nearby counties plan to exit the federal plan on August 1. The issue remains muddled amid state press denials.

Osceola ball club lost to Stromsburg on Stromsburg field last Sunday. A tight game until the eighth inning when Stromsburg unleashed its power and pulled ahead, finishing 12 to 4.

Stoner Club Hosts July Meeting and Picnic Plans

The Stoner Club met July 17 at Mrs. Frank Hendrickson home with 21 members and guests. A planned August 21 picnic at Buckley Park Stromsburg was set, Ruby Lewis joined as new member, and flood relief comforts were sent to southern Nebraska. A penny collection collected 79 cents and a summer lunch followed.
