Local families hosted and visited across Polk with multiple Sunday gatherings at the Church and relatives in Grand Island Lincoln and Osceola. Harold Reeb opened a liquor dispensary in Polk joining Arnold Crow as a licensed dealer amid countywide changes. Wheat harvest advances amid rumors of variable yields while corn shows rapid growth and potential for a strong crop with rain.
An advertising notice urges readers to subscribe to a newspaper with weekly and annual rates. It emphasizes the value of daily news and provides pricing for Nebraska, Northern Kansas, and other states, encouraging immediate orders by mail or through an office.
The first Ak-Sar-Ben race meet under the new law at Omaha produced $26,743.65 for Nebraska state revenues including license fees and admissions tax. After expenses and a $5 fund, the balance will be shared with county fairs, each likely over $300. Ak-Sar-Ben also awarded about $10,000 in purses to Nebraska foaled or owned horses, with breeders and owners statewide benefitting. Sheriff Duffy of Holt County will receive 3 percent of winnings from Nebraska foaled races, as a contributor to the prize pool.

National Farm Loan associations oversee ten Nebraska counties with Judge Fred A. Wright as emcee renowned as the Will Rogers of Nebraska. A flag raising at 1130 am begins the day followed by noon coffee and 1 pm program of speeches music races and kitten ball games. Counties Lancaster Platte Nance Boone Hamilton York Polk Butler Seward Merrick form the picnic area.
Carrol Christensen and Miss LaVerne McHargue visited at the Ansel Fredrickson home on Sunday evening. The Progressive Shepherds met at Junior Swanson's home Monday. Families shared a picnic supper at Buckley Park Sunday. The O. D. D. Club met at Mrs. Henry Thelander’s Wednesday afternoon. Russell Fredrickson made a business call in Omaha Friday. Ed Oberg and family visited Arthur Oberg in Benedict Sunday and helped celebrate his wife’s birthday. Opal Fredrickson stayed with aunt Mrs. Victor Newman in York for a few days. Joseph and Russell Fjell attended a picnic at Hampton Sunday. Confirmation Class will meet Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Mrs. Milda Johnson spent Sunday with Warner Samuelson. Gust Peterson and DeLoss Buchholz enjoyed a Genoa picnic Sunday. Mrs. C. A. Sward and daughters visited John Johnson Monday. Mrs. Henry Johnson and daughter of Polk visited Ellen Anderson Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson and family of Portland, Oregon visited Swede Home friends Saturday. August Swanson and S. J. Harless visited Wren Sherwood’s near Clarks Sunday. Harless attended Charles Knerr’s funeral Friday.
Union Pacific announces a solid day coach and tourist section for the Los Angeles Limited due to rising transcontinental travel. The section starts eastbound July 11 from Los Angeles and July 12 westbound from Omaha, making the Los Angeles Limited an all-Pullman train with its own dining car and low cost meals for coach and tourist passengers.
Any person 65 or older entitled to an Old Age Pension under S. F. 137 can obtain an application blank from the County Commissioner or the Office of the County Treasurer. Polk County Old Age Pension Board.
Thursday evening the Luther League gathers at the church with the John Oberg family and Allinda Fernandez. Remember the contest and support your side by attending Sunday services at 10 am Sunday School 11 am Worship 8 pm Vespers. Harmony Society meets July 25 at Miss Anna Nelson home with Miss Evelynne Peterson program leader.
Weekend work saw fields cut shocked and ready for threshing with Ed Augustin first to thresh. Red rust common but yields expected near average. Local social scene includes visits by Nebosis family members, dances at Hasselbalch and Ellers halls with Art Derrick's orchestra.
Fairview residents recount gatherings at Joe Need home with Rev E C Maxcey and family guests. Numerous visits include the Buchta and Mace households, Vera Beckmeyer assisting Vertie Heitzman, and birthday honors for Mrs George Heinemeyer. Local trips include Zola Frizzell visiting Wayne and others attending Columbus, Sutherland, and Osceola events.
Heat exposure symptoms include headache red face hot dry skin no sweating strong rapid pulse and very high temperature requiring immediate medical contact. Heat exhaustion shows pale moist skin profuse sweating weak pulse low temperature with brief loss of consciousness and cooling measures and stimulants as advised by Red Cross official. Subscriptions are available for Omaha and Lincoln Daily newspapers.
The Wesley Chapel Women’s Foreign Missionary Society met with Miss Lulu Burns. Miss Esta Herrmann read a piece from India. Members donated pennies. The Church Aid met Friday evening. Citizens were asked to park near the church. Local residents and guests visited, traveled to Lincoln for business, picked cherries, and assisted with harvest.
Shelby residents shared visits and travels with relatives and friends across nearby towns. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Herman Bahm at a sister in law’s funeral in Prague and many others visiting in Shelby, plus a birth announced at St Marys Hospital in Columbus. County events featured the Dorcas Society meeting at the Methodist church and Legion Auxiliary gathering hosted by Mrs Everett Reece.
Twenty one Polk County students attend the University of Nebraska during the summer session. Stromsburg provides ten students, Osceola eight, Shelby two, and Polk one. Several are in the graduate college or teachers college with varied junior or senior status and some have taught in Leigh Albion Genoa Norfolk or Sterling. The university reports over two thousand registered summer students, the largest turnout since 1932, including 726 in the graduate college.

Mrs Charles Greenwood presents piano pupils in a recital at the Methodist Church Friday evening with Miss Marjorie Dunn and her students assisting. The program features pieces by Watson, Copeland, Mason, Schubert, Brahms, and Tschaikowsky among others performed by a large group of young pianists including Verna Richards, Ruth Stewart, Irma Stewart, and Mary Mae Timm.
Rev and Mrs Maurice Rosine return to Sumner Nebraska after two weeks visiting Stromsburg relatives and Rev Rosine will soon head to California. Albert Ericson and family of Pittsburgh PA visit Stromsburg, Ericsons host picnic for them at Buckley park. Joseph Netsell former Stromsburg resident dies in Central City after illness. funeral held. Local baseball team loses to Silver Creek 7 2. Arthur Carlson and Boots Marvel near to operate Numerous Inn after purchase of site and buildings.
In a church update, 80 to 90 percent of Sunday School pupils attended last Sunday as worship emphasis grows. Leaders urge parents to ensure worship participation, arguing it drives character building. Plan trial continues with worship at 10 and lesson study at 11, choir paused for practice, special music from Mr. and Mrs. DeLoss Buchholz.
The Jolly Workers gathered at the Miller school house on Thursday July 11. All girls completed dust cloths and will now craft holders. They learned the difference between garment bins and true bins. The 4 H club pins were awarded. Elaine Tradway acted as hostess during refreshments.
