Mr and Mrs Oscar Imm of the Fairview neighborhood report an average yield of 29.5 bushels per acre from 120 acres of wheat across two places. They note many fields in the territory exceed this level, though their total acreage makes their result hard to beat.
Mrs. Sally A. Burbach 19 of Scottsbluff died in Gordon Nebraska hospital after a car crash two and a half miles west of Merriman. Driver Richard H. Burbach 22 of Bassett fell asleep at the wheel. two back seat passengers survived with injuries and the couple were en route to Bassett to find a home. Survivors include her husband her parents Mr. and Mrs. R W Berglund and three sisters. She was a Scottsbluff High School graduate class of 1951 and member of the Scottsbluff city band and Bryant Church.
Max Peterson, assistant cashier at Continental National Bank of Lincoln, spoke to officers of First National Banks of Shelby and Osceola at their Osceola meeting. He discussed personnel problems and banking procedure, representing the Lincoln bank’s personnel division in the Polk County group. Peterson is the son of Dr. and Mrs. C. R. Peterson of Osceola.
Mr and Mrs Campbell depart Osceola after ten days with his parents. Crawford Campbell advances in the music field by accepting an assistant professorship in the music department at Montana State College Bozeman.
Dale Frizzell has resigned as Polk County assessor to take a position with the National Farm Loan Association in York Nebraska. The resignation becomes effective August 8 after 14 years at the Osceola courthouse and 12 years with the PMA. The Frizzell family will move to York once housing is found.
Osceola Bethel Jobs Daughters welcomed Past Worthy Masters and Past Worthy Matrons from Gresham, Shelby, Polk, Silver Creek, and Osceola Eastern Star lodges on Thursday night July 16 in Osceola lodge rooms. An obligation ceremony followed the regular meeting with special music by local performers and a luncheon in purple and white decor.
Plans were laid for the Extension Ladies to oversee foods and needlework at the County Fair Women’s Building with Mrs. George Tiaden as general superintendent. Clubs joining include North Shelby Swede Home and Usharit. Mothers Vacation Camp will be at Kiwanis Camp near Fremont August 24 25 26 with a 5 dollar fee plus exchange items.
Polk County reports show Sunday and Monday rainfall varied from no moisture to two inches. Observers note the dry southeast and St Marys area received up to two inches while Osceola and surrounding zones had light showers. Farmers warn corn damage looms if rain lags, though crop looks healthy for now with cooler weather aiding root depth.
The Polk County 4-H Fun Night at the Lutheran Church basement Osceola on July 27 selects two winners to compete at the David City Auditorium on July 31. Winners progress to the State Fair in Lincoln and possibly National Club Week in Chicago. Eligible members are 10 to 21 with at least one completed project or first-year ten-year-olds. Funeral services for Mrs. Nora E. Bush 79 native of Nebraska City were held at 10 a m Wednesday at Porter Funeral Home in Nebraska City. She had lived with her daughter Mrs Fred E Heeren in Omaha. She died in an Omaha hospital. Surviving: her daughter two sons H D Bush of Allentown Pa and Dwight M Bush of Osceola and three grandchildren.
Fifty two 4-H members and leaders registered for a Seward camp this week from Monday to Wednesday. Three adult leaders assist supervision. A July 16 picnic at Osceola Park drew about 95 participants with swimming courtesy of the Osceola Chamber of Commerce. Ice cream provided by Roberts Dairy and drinks by Extension Service. Judging for 4-H girls at Lutheran Church basement 8:30 Monday morning July 27. Share The Fun Contest at 1:30 followed by Music Contest at the Lutheran Church the same day. Friends may attend.
Osceola Municipal Swimming Pool set a one day attendance record with 350 swimmers. Manager James Norton said crowds in past years neared this figure but never surpassed it. Visitors included tourists county residents and season ticket holders as the pool stays open until school resumes.
The Nebraska Crop Improvement Association cautions farmers about transient seed companies selling oats at premium prices. It notes Mo-205 seed may fetch 3.75 to 4.00 per bushel while buying from farmers at 2.00. With 4,000 acres of Mo-205 grown, ample seed exists from certified growers. Beware of out of state seed from northern states as they are often ill adapted.
The Osceola Chamber of Commerce contracts Dakota Asphalt Sales Corp to oil town streets in a voluntary program funded by residents for frontage costs. The city covers intersections and alley frontages. Oil is a heated asphalt base designed to form a hard surface, reduce dust, and improve drainage. Costs are 10 cents per running foot, about one cent per square foot, varying by block width.
The fourth annual Peter Jones family reunion was held on Sunday July 19 at Osceola Park with 42 attendees. The Osceola group includes Branting Calvert Branting Branting Jones and Harkin members among many relatives. Committees for the event were led by Mrs. Carl Calvert and Mrs. Kermit Branting with next year planned by Mrs. Medy Branting and Mrs. Ed Harkin.
The Extension Womens Council elected new officers at the July 14 meeting. Mrs. Tom Schmoker becomes county chairman with Mrs. Ray Burke as vice chair and Mrs. Harry Hennings as secretary treasurer. Delegates to the State Extension Womens Council include Mrs. George Tiaden, Mrs. Schmoker, and Mrs. Hennings, for the Norfolk event September 22 to 24.
Harvests appear strong with wheat praised and corn outstanding despite dry spells. Osceola features new Legion front, dining room updates at Malek's, and a cautious optimism for Polk County Fair August 3 to 6 with racing plans under discussion. The Letter e is praised for its paradoxical role.
