Roy Cox George Anderson and Verner Johansen fished Rat and Beaver Lakes in the sandhill country over the weekend. They reported excellent luck catching bullheads up to two pounds and perch, reaching their limit on the trip. They left Osceola Thursday and returned Saturday.
Ross Watts returned to Sheppard Air Force Base after leave and was transferred to Reno Nevada with a new address at 3904th F Sv. Ltd Stead Air Force Base. Seaman Donald E Petersdoh after Navy Teleman School graduation spent 30 days with his parents and will rejoin USS Mountrail at Pearl Harbor as postal mail clerk.
Mr and Mrs E L McCormick and son Donnie with Mr and Mrs Frank Joy visited Rock Island Illinois for three weeks and returned home to El Monte California after traveling from Rock Island Tuesday.
The Osceola council approved Norman Fintel as Chief of Police at the last meeting. He assumed duties immediately and serves as police chief and water commissioner. Burl Fox remains night watch, with Fintel available to assist if needed.
The Gas Company announces a new model refrigerator on display at its Osceola office. The box features automatic ice cube freezing and dispensing. Demonstration day is Wednesday July 22 with home economist Patricia Doyle on hand all day. Punch and cookies served from 10 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 4 pm. Public invited.
Eugene Brase aged 13 and his brother Henry Jr aged 6 died in a freak accident east of their Shelby area home last Sunday around 8 p m. The brothers were attempting to milk a family cow when a tractor upset on the road shoulder pinning them beneath. A rifle in the tractor may have caused a fatal gunshot to Eugene as the vehicle turned. No inquest will be held. The Shelby fire department aided in removing the tractor.
Hospital records show patient dismissals including Mrs. Robert Mills Mrs. Don Wright Mrs. Jessie Lucas Mrs. Otto Swanson Mrs. Caroline Norstrom Miss Alma Hayhurst and Clair Emmons as discharged. Sheldon Bond also listed among released patients.

Mr and Mrs Paul Gustafson of Lincoln announce the birth of a daughter Carol Ann weighing six pounds and a half born July 3 Mrs Gustafson is the former Ruby Walgreen daughter of Mrs Martha Wal green.
Mrs. Rose Dinges learns her daughter Lois will take a two week vacation and travel home with sister LaVonne from Hayward California. They are set to arrive in Omaha by train on July 24.
A community gathering at Mrs. Herman Eklund’s home produced about 60 acres of grain in two hours with thirteen combines. Grain hauled to Durant Elevator. fuel donated by Rodney Larson and Ray Hunsaker. Additional fields later cultivated by Willard Larson, Robert Anderson, Lloyd Boden, and Morris Boden.
Althea Thelander and Arnold E. Deam, both of Chicago, united in marriage at St. Paul’s Ev Lutheran Church Chicago with Rev. Wm J Hyllengren officiating. Attendants included Mildred Regnell Carole Lofgren and Charlotte Deam. The couple resides at 2952 N New England Ave Chicago.
A new book Sod House To Shelterbelt by the late W A Stevens, Polk County pioneer, has been added to the Osceola Library Memory Shelf by his children with thanks to donors.
The Tri County Flower Show will be held Tuesday July 28 at the theatre building in Silver Creek. Entries open 8:30 a.m. and judging ends 11 a.m. Public viewing runs 1:30 to 5 p.m. Sixteen special prizes are offered this year including a men’s division.
The Gas Company announced on July 10 that heating permits are required for installing natural gas space heating equipment in both new and existing buildings. The company cited limited natural gas supply and increased load since restrictions were removed in May, and urged applicants to register immediately to obtain permits issued in order of receipt.
The 1953 wheat harvest in Polk County is completed with small loads reaching town. Yields in the south and east of Osceola show loss from hail and moisture, averaging around 24 acres yielding 27 bushels per acre. Farmers switch to oats though returns are not profitable, while corn looks healthy but needs moisture in late summer.
Osceola Project Club will meet Tuesday evening July 21 with hostess Mrs Earl Miller. Mr and Mrs Don Byers visited over the weekend at the Dr W L Byers home in Wakefield.
Herman Gust Eklund born July 28 1912 southwest of Stromsburg died July 7 1953 at age 40. Survived by wife Ruth two sons Donald Ray and Robert Wayne parents siblings and many relatives. Services July 9 at St Pauls Osceola and Salem Stromsburg with pallbearers and choirs. interment Stromsburg cemetery.
House guests over the weekend at the Phil Nyberg home were Mr. and Mrs. G. Bouma and family of Gardena, California, and Mrs. Clyde Barber and daughter of Patterson, California. The ladies are sisters of Mrs. Nyberg.
Jack Conrad son of Mr and Mrs Ray Conrad of Osceola received a Navy Personnel Division notice in Washington DC appointing him a principal in TC after Naval College Aptitude Tests. His Navy schooling would be at the University of Nebraska unless enrollment is full, then at one of five alternative schools named by the Navy.
