Polk County Fair Opens with Rodeo and Attractions

The Polk County Fair starts Sunday evening July 18 at 8 p.m. with a two night rodeo and new acts including calf roping contests and a dog act. Open class and 4-H entries, judging begin Monday at 1 p.m. and continue through Wednesday with several events like Tractor Pull, Demolition Derby and Home Talent Show.

Kresha Wins Central Division Elks Award and Scholarship

Andrew Kresha son of Glen Kresha won the Most Valuable Student Award in the Nebraska Elks Association central division. He received the award and a $200 scholarship at a noon meeting on Friday July 9 at the York Lodge after qualifying by winning a $100 scholarship from the York Elks Club.

Cerny Named to Naval Academy Dean's List

Congressman Dave Martin notified that Gerald J. Cerny of Osceola was named to the Naval Academy Dean's List for his second semester. The class of 1974 midshipman earned a 3.50 GPA that term, with a cumulative 3.41 after year one. Cerny was nominated by Martin after Osceola High School graduation.

Area girls join 200 students for NET televised concert

Area girls like Cindy Nahrstedt of Osceola and Barbara Hartman of Stromsburg join about 200 Nebraska high school and junior high students in the Concert at Dusk on NETN. The program closes the 1971 All-State Fine Arts Course with band orchestra and chorus and was videotaped July 1 by NETN cultural affairs and a University crew outdoors before Kimball Hall on the University of Nebraska campus.

District 4-H Horse Show Sees 124 Competitors From 13 Counties

One hundred twenty four 4-Hers from thirteen counties competed at the District 4-H Horse Show held at the fair grounds to qualify for the State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben livestock shows. Osceola Pony Team Extends Win Streak Over Waco

The Osceola Pony Team defeated Waco 4 to 2 to run their season mark to seven wins. Osceola exploded for three first inning runs on three hits and an error, then added a fourth run on seven hits with four errors in the game. Daryl Nelson pitched and Doyle Nelson caught. Osceola hosts Gresham at the fairgrounds diamond Saturday July 17 at 7 p.m.

Osceola Tops St Edward to Lead CNB League

Osceola improved to 7-1 in the Central Nebraska Baseball League by defeating St Edward 9-3 on Sunday. Parminter hit two home runs and Waldo Peterson also homered as Osceola pulled away behind Marion Bernt and Peterson on the mound. Rex Gross nicklaus caught, with Alvin Stenzel starting for St Edward and Jerry Hiller relieving. Line scores: Osceola 9 St Edward 3.

Osceola School Board reviews Clayton Architects plans

William Hecht and Roger Chris tenson of Clayton Architectural in Grand Island met Osceola School Board Monday night to discuss Jeffrey Grade School expansion. They presented three layouts adding classrooms restrooms and storage, with options for south end or kitchen area changes. The board requested two classrooms and storage on the south end plus north kitchen storage, and will meet again when new blueprints arrive. The board also discussed track field work and approved painting.

Gavlik Returns to Norfolk Aboard Forrestal After Mediterranean Cruise

Navy Airman Edward J. Gavlik son of Mrs. Stasia Paprocki of Silver Creek Nebraska has returned to his home port of Norfolk Virginia aboard the USS Forrestal after an extended deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. The 80 000 ton carrier with a 5000 man crew steamed over 34000 nautical miles visiting Malta Greece Spain France and Italy before entering the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for an extended overhaul.

City Council Hears From Citizens and Vendors at July 8 Meeting

4-H Camp Attended July 1 3 by Polk Butler Colfax 4-Hers

Four H club members from Polk County joined 120 peers from Butler and Colfax Counties for a three day camp from July 1 to July 3. Activities included handicrafts ceremonies skits swimming songs games and more. Polk County attendees included Lynn Jones Mrs Raymond Burke Linda Herrmann and counselors Dianne Augustin Shelby and Tom Wyman. The Stromsburg Community Club bus was driven by Mrs Raymond Burke to the camp.

Osceola Girls Attend Red Dance Caravan in Kansas City

Donette Gabriel and Peggy Tindall of Osceola and Sue Hourigan of York attended the Red Dance Caravan in Kansas City Missouri from July 6 to 8. They studied diverse dance routines with instructors who appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and in Broadway productions under Benny Smith, Miss America Pageant choreographer, along with chaperones Mrs Art Gabriel and Mrs Charles Hourigan.

NPPD Hires Environmental Staff for Management Roles

The Nebraska Public Power District announced two new full time environmentalists. Dr. Eric N. Sloth, 49, PhD in physical chemistry, becomes environmental manager. Warren Bell, 24, Nebraska Wesleyan University graduate, will work in environmental management with Sloth. The division reports to the generation engineering department in Columbus. Kathy McVeigh joins Dean's List at Kansas State College for spring semester.
