Nebr man killed in grain truck crash near Shelby
Fred Peterson 45 of Arcadia Nebraska died after a grain box truck returning from Omaha ran off the road three miles east of Shelby. The driver from Loup City appears to have fallen asleep causing the crash. another passenger escaped injury. Sheriff and Kepner ambulance aided, Peterson died before Columbus hospital transfer.

Stromsburg Boys Drown at Lake Babcock Near Columbus
Maynard Swanson son of Mr and Mrs Edwin Swanson and Marlow Swanson son of Mr and Mrs Abel Swanson of Stromsburg drowned in Lake Babcock near Columbus last Sunday. The 19 year old cousins, non swimmers, stepped into water beyond their depth while wading after sailing a previously fitted boat. Bodies recovered about two hours later after fire department rescue attempts. Both were graduates of Stromsburg High School.

Polk County farmers who kept within 1939 wheat allotments qualify for loans announced by John S. Staroscik of the Agricultural Conservation Committee. Loans depend on grade and storage option, with 67c for grade 1 wheat and a scale for lower grades. Farmers may store on farm for 30 days after threshing plus a 3 dollar loan-creation fee or use an elevator with a 1.50 dollar fee for immediate funds. Raymond Waggoner of Osceola receives the first loan: 290 bushels, 54 grade, 61c rate, totaling 148.33 dollars.

50 Years Threshing Veteran Shares Farm Life
O J Kropatsch, owner of 560 acres north of Osceola, has threshed for 50 years. He recalls hand days, early harvesting at 16, and a life built on steam rigs now aging at 33 years. He plans to thresh only his own 105 acres and 80 for a nephew, move to New Castle Wyoming for health reasons, and reflects on drought relief and wartime grain prices.

Fire Destroys Threshing Machine and Barn at Stevens Farm
Fire of unknown origin destroyed a threshing machine and the straw-filled barn on the Glenn Stevens farm on Thursday. Five horses perished inside the barn as neighbors spotted the blaze while the threshers were at T A Stevens home for dinner. Firefighters arrived too late to save the structures.

Instead of business, members heard short talks by George Craven and Will Hansen about their trips to the east and west coasts. Fire destroys farm buildings near Shelby and Rising City
About six o'clock Saturday the Shelby Fire Company battled a blaze at the John Smith farm south of Shelby that consumed a garage and crib. No one was home. the origin is unknown and no insurance covered the structures. Early Sunday Rising City’s Lutheran church burned completely, with the fire spreading risks to nearby homes. David City crews aided Rising City in preventing further damage.

Two Stromsburg men named Herb Olson and Dan Evins returned from the Loup River with a 46 pound catfish. They displayed the fish at Moore and Hunsaker lumber yard where onlookers could hardly believe the size of the catch.
