Locusts humming headlines a cool week as frost seems six weeks away while drought and climate theories swirl. The summer of 1975 promises the first US USSR joint space mission amid calls for broader cooperation.
Osceola's Lynn Boden, 22, a 1971 OHS graduate and 6'5" 270 lb offensive guard, leaves for Detroit to join the Lions. He will spend weeks in Evanston preparing for the August 1 College All Stars game and aims to help the 1975 Super Bowl champions, with a Lions schedule including six pre season games and 14 regular season contests. Boden credits high school and South Dakota State coaches for his attitude and plans to return to Polk County in the off season.
At a Lions Club meeting Gene Sterup presented Art Senkbeil with a plaque as winner of the 1975 achievement award. Senkbeil chaired the renovation committee and aided multiple service projects. The ceremony included local officials, a patriotic program, and recognition of Polk County Bicentennial leaders and Fair Board members.
Professor Reinhold Marxhausen photographed the old high school building for three mounted color prints his 80 slides show in the Osceola event July 24 at 8 pm. The exhibit coincides with his statewide art work including mosaics in the Capitol and sculptures for midwest churches and a Nebraska ETV documentary awarded in 1975 Local Program for Best Cultural Documentary.
Mr. and Mrs. Allen Marquart of South Sioux City move into the former Huston home on the Ridge and will teach Spanish and English in Osceola schools next term. Emily Terpstra and daughters Ramona and Joanne move from Omaha to the former Hazel Brown residence in south Osceola.
Bradshaw Midgets defeated Osceola 7 to 6 after a tight seven inning battle. Osceola built an early lead with a first inning run and a late surge, but Bradshaw rallied with two runs in the first and benefited from a critical misplay in the seventh to pull out the victory.
Osceola senior girls softball team loses three straight to fall to 1 win 5 losses. June 20 Waco wins 14 4 as Brenda Peterson drives in three with bases loaded and Teresa Campbell adds an RBI. Final vs Shelby 19 4 after early Osceola leads 6 3, Vicki Kucera drives in two and steals home. Three players selected for Gresham all star game.
Nelmar Tavares 17 visits Osceola with his brother Nelson under the International Cultural Exchange Program. He stays with the Nordstroms from Superior Wisconsin, plans to tour the United States and return by August 2. He enjoys Osceola music food and people and favors soccer water skiing and films.
