Pole strikes parked car in Osceola causing damage

A light pole struck a parked 1971 Plymouth owned by Levert Petersons of Osceola on Thursday July 1 causing about 270 dollars in damage. The pole broke after a Farmland Industries semi trailer hooked a Christmas light wire from the Record Corner to the Courthouse corner. Deputy Harrison estimated 25 dollars to the pole and 25 dollars to a street light with no damage to the truck.

Winners shine at Osceola Old Times Day

Osceola hosts Old Times Day with rain dampening the crowd little. Debra Burritt named Little Miss Osceola as youngsters competed in parade soap box derby and pie eating contests. Parade winners include Barbie Cerny Linnea Jones and Michelle Bender with themed floats.

York Ladies Open crowns Beebe in flight win

In Osceola last week a York Ladies Open event saw Joan Beebe clinch first place in her flight as several ladies competed for top honors across all divisions.

Mangelsen Named to Three Year FHA County Committee

Victor L. Mangelsen of Osceola will serve a three year term on the Farmers Home Administration County Committee for the 1972 fiscal year, replacing Horace M. McKeag. The panel also includes H. P. Tewell and Ronald L. Carlson. The committee handles farm loans, rural housing, emergency, watershed and recreation loans for Polk County. An itinerant interviewer from the State Labor Employment Division will be in Osceola at the Welfare office on Tuesday July 20 from 1 30 p.m. contact 747 5351.

Hail Damage Reported North of Osceola After Weekend Storm

Reports indicate widespread hail damage north of Osceola from a Sunday storm. High winds rain and hail severely damaged corn and wheat along a two mile strip north of town by Tuesday July 6.

Wheat field destroyed by fire near town

Fire damaged twelve acres of ready to cut wheat and a 1956 truck at the Duane Jones farm west of town on Friday July 2. Mrs. Jones said men had cut one swath and drove the truck in when the fire started. Fire officials suspect straw wrapping the drive shaft sparked the blaze. Damages not estimated. Stromsburg Fire Department responded.

Bloodmobile visit canceled in Shelby for July

The Bloodmobile tour to Shelby this July is cancelled with next visit to be announced. The route will shift from two to three miles east to about two miles west of town. Valley damage reported with no yield loss estimates yet. County Agent Lynn Jones notes corn and milo damage depends on leaf loss and crop maturity, with later planted or shorter corn less affected. Wheat damage will be harvest and shattering losses. harvesting and combining will be harder than usual.

Electric grill demonstration at Osceola office

Nebraska Public Power District held a June 21 electric grill demonstration for employees at the Osceola office to show use and desirability of the new grill. A noon luncheon featured grilled steaks and rolls for local staff. Participants included Gloria Carstens, Claude Pickrel, Ed Jenkins, Warren Campbell, Eugene James, and Gertrude Reece with guest Mrs. Warren Campbell.

Andy Kresha of OHS 1971 Salutatorian is listed in Merit's Who's Who Among American High School Students. The honor acknowledges his scholarship and leadership and makes him eligible for one of ten $600 scholarships he applied for.

Lady Drivers Enter Demolition Derby at Polk County Fair

The Polk County Fair slated a Demolition Derby on Wednesday July 21 at 8 p.m. inviting women to compete alongside male drivers. Past events saw two women win top honors and many others win heats, prompting a call for female entrants to register with the Fair Secretary.

Golf dinner display at Ryan Hill Club celebrate holiday

Arla Quick and Larry Christensen won low score in the mixed 2 ball foursome at Ryan Hill Country Club on Sunday July 4. Vic Mangelsen Kay Christensen won. Larry Christensen had high score. Marie Beebe and Nelle Merrick earned longest drives. Ray Nyffeler and No. 6 with a 5 iron and Carl R H Johnson Karlene Watts won Blind Bogey. Guests enjoyed golf barbecue and fireworks in the evening. Mr and Mrs Richard Kentopp and Ann journeyed from Fremont to Bellevue Washington where Kentopp becomes Hor mel plant superintendent. they visited her parents en route.

Nelson brothers honored at Fremont swim party

A Fremont swim party at the city park honored Lenny Donnie and Ronnie Nelson who were visiting their father Leonard Nelson. Hosts were Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Hahn Sharon Green and Bill Norton Jr. The Nelson brothers returned to Fremont Monday.

McMeekin Earns Auto Body Tech Degree at Milford Graduation

Patrick Gene McMeekin son of the Bob McMeekins of Osceola received his Associate of Applied Arts in Auto Body Technology on Thursday July 1 at Nebraska Technical College Milford. Marlo Burg president of National Crane Corporation Waverly delivered the commencement address.

Osceola Lions Pancake Feed Supports Sight Building

Osceola Lions Club raised funds at Old Times Day on June 30, committing donations to the Nebraska Lions Sight Conservation Foundation building fund. The pancake sale netted 152.18 after expenses 115.82. a 152.00 check was sent to the building fund treasurer on July 3, 1971. The club thanks area contributors to the Nebraska Lions Club project.

Preliminary wheat rate set at 1.60 dollars

The 1971 estimated wheat certificate rate for computing preliminary payments is 1.60 dollars per bushel. The initial payment uses 75 percent of 1.20 per bushel, with adjustments possible after July 1 if the rate is insufficient. Any excess over the final certificate value need not be repaid.

Historical Society visit to Duren Studio Shelby

Polk County Historical Society plans a bus tour to Duren Studio in Shelby for members on Thursday July 15. Supper will follow at Idle Hour Cafe in Osceola, with a business meeting after. Bus departs Osceola Hotel at 3 45 p m and reservations can be made with Doris Grossnicklaus and Mildred Flodman.
