Early Nebraska trade venture led by St Louis merchants

In 1793 a group of St Louis merchants formed the Company of Explorers of the Upper Missouri to trade with tribes along the Missouri. Spanish officials backed a monopoly from the Poncas to the upper Missouri and offered up to 3,000 dollars for a South Sea route. The first expedition was led by a St Louis school teacher.

Pioneering Voyage of Jean Baptiste Trudeau to Nebraska Country

Jean Baptiste Truteau left St. Louis on June 7, 1794 with eight men in a pirogue to establish trading posts. The party carried detailed instructions on locating and constructing buildings and setting high prices to protect the company’s armament costs. The venture met limited success as Trudeau was halted in South Dakota by the Teton Sioux who took most of his trade goods.

Voyage of Fur Trader Trudeau Near Fort Randall

Trudeau retraced his river route after a misadventure and built winter quarters opposite what would become Fort Randall. The winter yielded few profits though some furs were traded with the Sioux Omahas and Poncas. He then moved upriver to trade with the Iowaras and likely returned to St Louis by mid 1796.
