Diocese of Lincoln grants Father John Howe of St. Vincent's Osceola a dispensation from Friday abstinence for the parish Field Day on July 23. Public announcement urged to explain that church authority may set aside a legal abstemious rule for a just cause.
A swimming meet occurs at the Osceola pool on Thursday July 29 with teams from Columbus David City York and local entries. The event starts at 8 00 P M.
Osceola loses 11 to 1 at York in a Cornhusker League game. York shows strong offense, while Blessie wanes and Sterup closes innings. Seward moves to runner-up after beating Osceola’s hopes, with Seward and Osceola to face off next.
Visitors Monday and Tuesday at the Joe Schott home were Mr and Mrs Mike Lenherz and family and Mr Joe Lenherz of Denver.
An evening crash at Osceola’s northwest corner involving W. C. Calhoun’s car and a Romans Truck Line semi trailer left both vehicles damaged but no serious injuries. Truck driver Jim Kucera was treated at St. Francis Hospital and released. Calhoun and his wife escaped major harm. The tractor avoided the Calhoun auto, but the trailer tipped into a creek bed, scattering hardware cargo including eight washing machines and two automatic drawers. Officials moved merchandise to other trucks and retrieved the wrecked rig.
Osceola merchants will close Friday July 23 from 10 AM to 2 PM to attend the Field Day and Barbecue at the Geo and Bruce Anderson farm southeast of Osceola.
The Social Center Rest Home three miles north of Osceola is operated by Mrs. Ella Koehler and her husband on a leased 200 acre site. The home, for up to 15 guests, is described as a quiet, family-like environment with all meals and care managed to prioritize guest happiness and comfort.
Robert Kluch 14 drowned Saturday afternoon in a sandpit about one mile south of Clarks. Osceola Fire Department Emergency Squad fought to revive him for an hour and a half with a resuscitator but failed. He was swimming with four friends when severe cramps caused the incident. Son of Mr and Mrs Walter Kluch of Clarks the family is well known in the locality.
The Polk County Soil Conservation Field Day on July 23 at the Bruce and George Anderson farm near Osceola will feature practical demonstrations of soil conservation. Experts from the state college will lecture, and the Osceola Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a free noon barbecue funded by local businesses.
District 18 notes list Wednesday callers at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Anderson. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Gonka and family were visitors, while Mrs. Josie Benda and sons called on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. William Fyfe near Columbus. Leo Laosek and family visited Mrs. Laosek's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Zelasny near Monroe.
An improvised bomb exploded in a York filling station work room last week, killing 18 year old Dale Lewis and critically injuring Paul Swanson and Don Nicolaus. Employee Melvin Reece was injured by flying debris as the blast shattered windows and torn the roof. The event resonated through nearby buildings as families recall the incident.
Leo Koczor 46 died Wednesday at Clarkson hospital Omaha after a two week illness. Funeral services were Saturday at St Marys church Pisno with Fr Edward Jaworowski officiating. Burial in St Marys cemetery. Survived by wife Helen Czarnick and five children and many relatives.
Sophia Martin Hannell born February 5 1857 near Malmo Sweden died last Wednesday noon at age 91 years 5 months 9 days. Immigrated to America in 1880 lived in Illinois 1880 to 1885 then Stromsburg Nebraska. Married Andrew A Hannell April 3 1885. Lived near Osceola after 1892. Husband died October 31 1936. Survived by son William of Osceola daughter Hattie Tindal of Osceola two grandsons four great grandchildren.
Esther Herrmann traveled to visit the home of her parents for a few days this week, staying briefly with family to catch up and spend time together.
The Junior Legion team defeated Central City 4-0 behind Gabriel’s left handed pitching and errorless defense. Osceola led 4 hits to 5 for Central City as Kimicek and Monson gained experience late in the game. The squad then shut out Columbus 3-0 Sunday night with McCormick pitching. Tuesday they beat Geneva 9-5 as Gabriel pitched most of the game. A preceding midget game saw a 11-7 loss.
Garden Club met Tuesday evening at Lulu Ward's home with Amanda Waite assisting as hostess. Vice President Ward led the meeting and Olive McBeth organized the program featuring a fruit of health in Apple land and scenery in Yellowstone. Hazel Brown provided organ music and a lunch was served. a mid summer flower arrangement drew praise.
District 54 reports include funeral attendance for Fred Leith in Silver Creek and burial at St Marys Pilsno. Local families such as Wamsleys and Lowmans share visits with teachers and relatives. Leo Roctor’s death in Omaha is noted with services held near St Marys. Various visits from Anoka Minnesota and St Edward Nebraska appear with relatives and friends sharing time in early week.
Polk County faces a bumper corn crop this year with abundant rainfall and ideal temperatures. As of March 10, 1948, 869,745 bushels were on hand valued at 1 325 010 dollars, not counting winter-fed grain. The countywide outlook promises prosperity for farmers and towns alike.
