Polk County Farm Groups Back Proposed Farmer Radio Station

Local farm groups meeting in Osceola on June 28 voted unanimously to back a farmer owned radio station for Nebraska. Leaders from Cooperatives, Farm Bureau, Farmers Union, and farmwomen urged information on taxes schools and roads, with Stanley Harless elected County Radio Chairman and a county committee named. Max Brown and G W Erickson spoke for the Nebraska Rural Radio Association.

Baseball Team Splits Pair of Games In Week Judy

Osceola split a pair in the Cornhusker League, winning 7-0 at Geneva with Blessie pitching, and losing 12-5 to Utica. Batters added 13 hits in the Geneva win, boosting team .269.

Osceola Legion remains undefeated in regular league play after a 16 to 7 victory over Humphrey on Wednesday. Osceola built a 13-run third inning surge aided by Winston Hastrider and Kmiecek pitching, while Humphrey’s Hastridter was relieved after the big inning. Columbus and Humphrey games loom, with Osceola needing one more win to seal a district playoff berth.

Wheat Harvest Nears Finish in Polk County

Wheat is entering Polk County elevators with mixed results from the latest storm. Yields range from low to exceptional as hail and dry weather affect test weights from 56 pounds to higher. Transportation bottlenecks persist as elevators and fleets work long shifts to unload before night.

Government Will Support Wheat Price Loans in Polk County

Polk County AAA reports federal loans to support the 1948 wheat crop. Eligible wheat must meet grading No. 3 or better or No. 4 or 5 by test weight, stored in approved facilities, with 14 percent moisture max for winter wheat. Loans run to April 30, 1949, at about 3 percent interest. Farmers may apply now for farm stored loans. warehouse loans require announced rates. Sealing fees set at 1 cent per bushel for farm stored and ½ cent for warehouse stored loans. Contact Polk County AAA office in Osceola.

Soil Conservation District Reports on Brome Grass Effects

On the Albert Swanson farm a brome grass field soaked up rain unlike nearby fields. Experiments show after 4 to 5 years cropland brome improves water absorption erosion resistance and soil quality. Polk County Conservation Day set for July 28 at the George F and Bruce Anderson farm.

Swede Home Church Hosts Fourth of July Celebration

The Calvary Lutheran Church of Swede Home held its third annual Fourth of July event on the church grounds with many Osceola and Stromsburg attendees. Martin Jones led contests and fireworks while the Luther League sold pie coffee pop and ice cream. A patriotic devotional was conducted in the church.

The Osceola hotel has been sold to Mr and Mrs George M Spurgeon of Des Moines Iowa new owners and operators. They plan to redecorate the property with lobby work starting this weekend. The former owners Mr and Mrs Ory have not announced future plans though they may build a home locally.

Date Set for Soil Conservation Field Day in Polk County

On July 23 a full day program will be held on the 540 acre Anderson farm near Osceola to showcase soil conservation practices. Deadline Set for Instate of GI Insurance Reinstatement

Lincoln VA official Ashley Westmoreland announced a July 31 deadline for WWII veterans to reinstate lapsed GI insurance without a physical exam if lapsed less than three months. About 3,116 Nebraskans have reinstated in six months. policies range from 1 000 to 10 000 with waivers for disability. A luncheon lunch will be served by organization members at noon intermission.

Osceola Legion Club Installs New Furniture

The Osceola Legion Club adds new furniture to its club room improving appearance and comfort. Farmers report a strong wheat harvest while Osceola Park pool attracts many visitors this week. The carnival sponsored by the American Legion will feature a fish stand manned by local legionnaires. N. S. Abolt, a Polk County resident since 1881, visited the Record office recently.
