Nebraska game commission reveals from the first 500 applications that 1950 special deer season permits have been requested by hunters from 80 of 93 counties. Merrick and Polk each submitted seven applications.
Polk County Agricultural Society announces the Polk County Fair will run August 21 22 and 23. A new Strong Amusement Company Carnival headlines Midway entertainment with free acts by Williams and Lee and Jerry Hedrick. Events include baseball tractor derby riding show and more. The National Crochet Contest offers a $500 national prize and trip to New York or Chicago if the local entrant wins and advances. Betty Crocker Softusulk silver plate award expected to attract homemakers. For contest questions contact Paul Alonson or Robert Mills. Mrs. D. T. Kelley, past president of the Osceola Auxiliary, received a letter inviting her to serve as a page at the annual Legion Auxiliary convention in Lincoln from July 17 to 20.
Mr and Mrs John Staroscik and daughter Sue return home after a two weeks trip. Mrs Al Kinder and children, who spent the last month with her parents, go back to Mount Clemens Indiana. They visited Ni agra Falls Gettysburg Washington D C and several historic sites along the way.
Harold Klingman reports Polk County received 1.44 inches of rain in June, well below the 4.25 inch normal. Temperatures ran about 2 percent above normal. Only mid month had measurable rain with datesJuly 14 and 27 and 15 a trace. 17 recorded .64, 18 .48, and 20 .05. Despite drought, corn growth remained normal and the hottest day hit 98 degrees on June 22.
Overland Land and Gravel Company of Stromsburg awarded contract for maintenance gravel surfacing in Polk county. Work from Silver Creek to U S 30GA on State Highway No. 39 with over two thousand yards of gravel. Low bid totaled 1976.25 dollars.
The Osceola Fire Department and their families plan a picnic at City Park on Thursday July 20 at 7 PM. Fire team members and families are invited and asked to bring their own silverware cup and plate.
Frank Layton aged 88 died early Tuesday morning July 11 at the home of his daughter Mrs Roselle Ellis after years of bedridden illness. He lived in the area many years and is survived by his daughter and other relatives.
Thirteen friends gathered at the Roy Johnson home to mark Nancy's 13th birthday anniversary. Games were played and a candle decorated cake was served with refreshments.
Brig. General N Henninger outlines that the extended Selective Service Act preserves registration rules for 18 year olds and adds authority for the President to activate National Guard and reserves. He notes exemptions for certain paid local employees but stresses penalties for noncompliance and the need to update address changes with local boards. College students must notify boards when leaving school.
The Polk County Draft Board will be re activated next week with operations starting Monday July 17 for duties under the extended draft law. Edith Russell is named draft board clerk and tentatively will handle duties at the Osceola Plumbing and Heating Co building. Henry Galus and Wesley Koehler are current members. additional members may be added once in operation.

The W. C. T. U. will hold their annual picnic in the park on Thursday July 13 at 6 PM. The event invites members and friends to attend and share in the community gathering.
The Beginners' Swimming Class will begin at the Osceola swimming pool on Monday July 17 at 10 30 A M. Children 6 years and over will be accepted for this class. A season ticket at the swimming pool is required.
Dr D T Kelley will leave Osceola soon to report to the western naval base by August first for active duty at the San Diego hospital. He says Dr Delfs will be in Osceola two afternoons a week, Wednesday and Saturday. Mrs Kelley and the children will remain in Osceola indefinitely.

It outlines harvesting methods storage tips and contact via Osceola office plus recent topographic surveys and new dam structures on multiple farms to aid irrigation and erosion control.
Stanley Harless Polk County Rural Radio Chairman announced precinct captains were chosen at a meeting in Stromsburg. The committee includes Orville Hennings Wallace Logan Oscar Boden Elton Berck Mrs Sam Wyman Kenneth Meyers Guilford Bryan and Mrs Lloyd Hahn. The group will recruit workers in each precinct to complete rural radio membership after harvest. The station has license to operate a farmer and rancher owned outlet at Lexington with 23000 watts on frequency 2010. Funding comes from $10 membership certificates and loans from individuals and organizations.
About 65 4 H members leaders and parents attended Polk County Extension 4 H Demonstration Day held July 6 at the 4 H Club Building. 14 demonstrations were presented covering topics from Pasture Management to Swine Sanitation and Making Custard with guidance from Catherine Kirwin and a State Office helper.
Polk County farmers report one of the best wheat crops in years despite rain delays. Yields range from 20 to 40 bushels per acre with a Shelby field at 52. first wheat is now arriving as number 1 grain and market price stood at 2.01 dollars last Monday.
Victor Sterup assumed the duties of secretary at the Polk-Butler Insurance Company last week after Bert Smith resigned due to illness. The firm operates extensively in eastern Polk and western Butler counties.
Rosemarie Gulbrandson daughter of Mr and Mrs Birger Gulbrandson Stromsburg and Richard Johnson were united in marriage by Judge Merrick Thursday afternoon July 6 They were attended by Mary and Bob Johnson siblings of the groom Mrs Johnson is Stromsburg High School graduate and nurses aide at Stromsburg Hospital Mr Johnson a 1948 Osceola High School graduate and carpenter by trade now works in Denver where they plan to make their home.
Mr and Mrs Guy Fox received word from their son Hubert that he and Dell Williams married June 30 in a Christian church in Tacoma Washington They were accompanied by Mr and Mrs Albert Schranger a cousin of the groom Mrs Fox a nurse at Tacoma hospital Mr Fox a government mechanic.
Osceola Project Club will meet with Mrs Ben Zedicher on Tuesday July 18 to discuss upcoming community work and plans.
