Polk County 4 H Judging Day Highlights Growth and Plans

The District 4 H judging day in Columbus featured 33 Polk County girls and 12 leaders across nine clubs. Activities covered cooking clothing and home making with beginner and advanced groups, plus live judging practice and a recording interview. Upcoming events include Leafy Green lessons in Stromsburg and a July 9 wardrobe project meet in Osceola led by Mrs. Edith Stevens. The BDG Club formed June 1 with officers Elaine Grossnicklaus president and Dorothy Brigham leading. next meeting July 6 at Phyllis From’s home.

Public urged on polio equipment purchases and care options

The Nebraska state office of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis warns local groups to assess the need and availability of hot pack machines respirators walkers before sponsoring purchases. It notes only a small percentage of polio cases require a respirator and many can be treated in hospitals. 30 respirators exist in Nebraska with epidemic pools available nationally. Loans of equipment via county chapters can be arranged when prescribed.

Osceola built a 4 4 record by winning last two games. Wednesday they beat Central City 6 to 2 behind Bob Sterup with solid defense. Sunday at Aurora Sterup led with four hits as Henggler Blessie and Bond added multiple hits in a 9 6 win with crucial plays on defense.

Graveside Rites for Pfc Earl Widga Held in Stromsburg

Graveside services for Pfc Earl L Widga 26 son of Mr and Mrs L N Widga of York were conducted at Stromsburg cemetery at 2 30 p m on Wednesday led by the American Legion. He served with the First Infantry Sixth Division and was killed in action in Lu zon March 17 1945. He entered the army from Polk County in June 1941 and had been overseas 18 months. Survived by his parents and five sisters Chalmer Daniels Silver Creek Floyd Morris Chapman James Schneider Omaha Herbert Tracy Lincoln and Marlyce at home.

Rain and Hail Ravage Polk County Including Osceola

Severe rainfall and hail drenched Polk County on Saturday causing flooding in Osceola and outlying areas. Water entered basements and two inches more would have flooded food lockers. multiple shops and elevators suffered damage while crews pumped water and evacuated homes. One car with passengers escaped via window rescue as towns endured widespread property losses and hail damage east of Stromsburg.

Hemmingsen Willits Wedding in Marquette Home

Miss Elva Louise Hemmingsen and Dale E Willits wed in a Sunday ceremony at the Hemmingsen home in Marquette. Rev J A Holst officiated for a double ring ceremony attended by family and friends with music by Mrs Arnold Hemmingsen and soloist Mrs Vergil Wright. The bride wore white dotted swiss in colonial style with a blue velvet headband and carried pink roses and snap dragons. After a reception at the bride’s home the couple planned a Colorado trip and will make their home in Columbus after July 15. Out-of-town guests included numerous relatives from Polk Lincoln Clarks Stromsburg Grand Island York and Aurora.

The Osceola and Swede Home midget teams met under lights Monday with a large, enthusiastic crowd. Osceola edged the visitors in a six inning game, but 30 to 40 boys played, making an exact account nearly impossible while the event highlighted the supervised youth program.

The York Legion defeated Osceola 6 to 3 on the Osceola diamond Tuesday night. Gabriel pitched for Osceola allowing seven hits with unearned runs from a couple of overthrows. York, fresh off a win over Grand Island, fielded a strong club in this nonleague game.

District No. 18 reports Mrs Edward Lisko visiting Tuesday with Mrs Louis Czuba near Columbus. M Fellers from Genoa visited a couple of days last week in Louis Schmidt home. Betty Hasselbalch of Omaha spent weekend with her parents Mr and Mrs Ralph Hasselbalch and Neal. Mr and Mrs Arthur Mayberger of near Columbus were Wednesday callers with her parents Mr and Mrs Adolph Bernt. Mr and Mrs Louis Scow and children spent last week in Kansas visiting relatives and Scow returned with them Sunday.

Gust A Peterson family reunion held at Osceola hall

The fifth annual Gust A Peterson reunion gathered 57 relatives from 87 invited on June 27 at Odd Fellows Hall Osceola due to weather. Attendees included Gunnard Peterson Anderson Johnson Reynolds Ogden Larson Ekstrom Monson Peterson and others. The next reunion is planned for the last Sunday in June 1949 with a committee led by Mrs Milton Peterson Mrs Kenneth Almstrom and Mrs Ralph Cooper.

Wesleyan announces engagement of Dreeszen and Deeds

The Wesleyan University Daily reports the engagement of Viona Louise Dreeszen to Irvin E. Deeds of Osceola. Dreeszen, a recent Wesleyan graduate, will teach at Dunbar Nebraska next year. Deeds, son of Mrs. Flossie Deeds, served three years in the Navy in World War I and is currently attending Wesleyan. No wedding date is set.
