Fire destroys Babcock Studio building in Shelby
About six o clock Friday evening a fire nearly destroyed the Babcock Studio and contents. Mr. Babcock blamed a four heater explosion for the blaze and noted no insurance, estimating losses around 1000 dollars. Several local residents and visitors are noted: Dr. A J Merrick of Fremont brought family, Lloyd Miller on vacation from Omaha, Miss Jean Brigham returning to Pittsburg, and numerous others visiting Shelby or traveling to Salt Lake City and back. The St Ann Sodality met at the parish hall and Miss Edith Inks plus family were in town briefly.

Corn Palace Cafe Expands Support to 4-H Youth
The Corn Palace Cafe, run by Ray Bouzek in Osceola trade territory, will place loans and livestock orders for 4-H Club members. The deadline for livestock and Farm Security Cooperative loans has moved to January 10 due to holidays. Applications should be filed at the county agent's office soon. Bouzek has placed youths with several breeds, and advance applications help youths secure preferred breed choice. Farm Security loans cover livestock purchases with 3 percent interest and require a parent signed note or loan agreement.

Tax Collections Up As County Treasurer Reports Six Month Totals
County Treasurer L M Smith reported a tax collection rise in the last six months of 1938, totaling 136 855 14 dollars compared with 117 900 in the same period of 1937. Fire destroyed the Swede Home store and hall five miles west of Osceola last Saturday night. Fire origin unknown. The frame building, erected about forty years ago, housed a general store on the first floor and a hall on the second. Estimated loss around 8000 dollars, partially insured. Firemen saved several nearby homes as crowds gathered, mistaking the blaze for New Year celebrations.

Carl Lind Seriously Injured In Highway 66 Accident
Carl Lind, state maintainer driver between Stromsburg and Polk on Highway 66, was badly injured last Saturday when a brake failed while uncoupling from the drag at the Burlington tracks crossing. He extricated himself and drove to Stromsburg for help, later being found to have fractures below both knees.

Mrs. Fred Schwab Dies at Daughter's Home in Minden
Mrs. Fred Schwab died at her daughter Mrs. Charles Lemkuhl’s home in Minden Nebraska Sunday evening January 1 at age 76 after a period of failing health. Her husband Mr. Schwab preceded her in death about a year ago. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 10:30 at the Methodist Church with Rev. A C Monkman in charge.
