The article traces Bethlehem as a minor Palestinian town before the Nativity, noting a pagan temple of Adonis desecrating the site prior to Constantine erecting the Basilica of the Nativity in 330 AD. The basilica remains one of Christendom’s oldest churches though the structure has seen later additions.

Sunday School at the Presbyterian Church begins at 10 a m next Sunday is New Year’s Day and attendees are urged to arrive early. The Frank H Anderson family sent a bag of English walnuts from their yard to the Sunday School which was greatly appreciated.

Visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Lowe, Mr. and Mrs. McKeag Jr., the Watts and Scholz families, Don Anderson, the Johnsons, and many others traveling between Columbus, Fullerton, Osceola, Shelby, and nearby towns. The Wesley Chapel page records families sharing Christmas gatherings across Nebraska towns. Multiple households, including Hastings, Cockson, Albers, Dunn, Herrmann, Palmer, Richards, Haxtun, Kuehnal, Gabriel, Kock, Nabb, Koehler, and others, hosted relatives and spent holidays in Beatrice Grand Island Lincoln Omaha and Ful lerton.
Osceola Community Club hosted its annual football banquet at Hotel Rapp with 100 plates set. Guest of honor was Bill Herrmann of the Cornhusker squad, joined by Ed Weir of the University of Nebraska who showed game films. Herrmann received a traveling bag and money, as Sam Crouse presided and W. W. Norton acted as toastmaster.
The Muse Theatre will run four nights weekly starting January 1 with two picture changes on Sunday and Monday and the other two on Friday and Saturday. No shows Tuesday through Thursday. A Saturday and Sunday matinee at 2:30 PM begins January 7 with 10c and 20c admission. Policy to continue until further notice.

They argue incompetence to manage property is enough, not insanity, and Warner retains rights despite business mistakes. opponents warn a single error could strip him of wealth and make his children wards.
Tax figures indicate despite lower assessed values for farm lands and town lots, real estate still accounts for the majority of property tax. Farm lands total 1 390 000 000 dollars and town lots 443 000 000, with railroads 143 million, livestock 77 million, poultry 1 547 million, grains 8 million, farm machinery 33 million, trucks and automobiles 53 million, household goods 16 million, goods and merchandise 39 million, power and telephone companies 21 and 17 million, pipelines 6 million, and industrial machinery 6 million.
Adolph Laska had his tonsils removed at the hospital Wednesday morning. Mrs Lawrence Albers and baby daughter Julee Mae were released from the hospital and returned home Tuesday. Dye Davis of Silver Creek underwent major surgery at the hospital last Thursday. Alton Bond returned home Sunday evening after an operation for appendicitis last week.
Rev Hamilton departs to Weeping Water this week to open a three week meeting series. Rev John Herrmann of Osceola will preach at Fairview Church in his absence. Valley Church will suspend services during January and February. W D Hamilton pastor.
Charles Becker of Denver visited several days this week in the home of his sister Mrs. Lloyd Cole and family. Osceca stores will close at noon Monday January 2 in observance of New Year's Day. Mrs. Etta Strouse of Fremont was a guest of her sister Mrs. Joe Jackson here on Christmas Day.
Stromsburg residents and relatives gather for visits and Christmas dinners. Lincoln guests attend events at Mrs. Hilma Toline’s home while many plan winter travels to Florida and southern states. Local families including Coveys Carlsonss and Andersons share meals and plan farewells as Minnesota and Visalia connections appear.
A long list of families from Fort Collins Lincoln Erickson Burwell Ames Iowa Norfolk Clarks V. L. Deay Benedict Polk Polk and other towns hosted or received guests over Christmas and holidays. Osceola Bulldogs win their third straight by one point 15 to 14 over Central City. Eugene Carman’s late basket and Lyle Mickey’s break play led to the upset as Sid Rutter led scorers with seven. Box score shows tight contest and upcoming conference games against Stromsburg and Polk noted.
Mrs. Elsie M. Sundberg aged 33 died about 6 a m Monday at her farm two miles west of Emerald while alone. Husband Eugene Sundberg fetched a doctor. Dr. George Lewis arrived after her death. They had visited Stromsburg and Christmas Day with her father Charles F. Johnson. Deputy Sheriff Hasson investigated. County Atty Towle to sign the death certificate and saw no reason for an inquest.
The Luther League sponsors a New Year’s Eve wake at 9:00 with a social hour lunch before the midnight devotion. Day sees Sunday School at 10, morning worship at 11 with sermon Our Barren Years, and evening worship at 7:30. Congregational meeting set for Tuesday night January 3 at 7:30. Ladies Aid meets January 6 at 2:00 in church parlors hosted by Mrs. John Carlson and Mrs. Mauritz Swanson.
The Methodist Church announces Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. and Morning Worship at 11:00 a.m. with a sermon titled In the Year 1939. Junior High League at 6:30 p.m. Senior High League at 7:00 p.m. Leadership Training Course follows at 7:30 p.m. The W M S will meet with Mrs. Leon Merrick Friday afternoon. Pastor A C Monkman thanks the county paper for 1938 church notices.
Miss Mildred Anderson resumes duties in Omaha after a weeklong visit with her father Claus Anderson and relatives in the area.
