Week of February snowbound report from Osceola to Stromsburg

A reader note describes travel woes with drifting roads and a 4 wheel drive delivery of Osceola office copy to Stromsburg at 1 30 PM Monday. Hardy Swedes Robert Strong and Bob Anderson aided the trip through closures while Harold and Louise waved from Harold's Market. Residents at the Good Samaritan Center endured chest high snow and a humorous shortcut mishap. A Samaritan Center staffer faced a flat tire after work.

Anderson pinned in state meet by Onstott in prelims

In the state high school wrestling tournament at Lincoln on February 18 and 19 Bryce Anderson wrestled at 155 pounds but trailed 4-0 before Harrisburg's Erwin Onstott pinned him with 32 seconds left in the second period. Anderson cannot reach wrestlebacks due to a prelim loss. Andy Kresha did not wrestle because of a foot injury early in the week.

Nebraska University Football Team Plays York All Stars

The Nebraska University Big Red football squad will meet York's All Stars in a basketball game at York City Auditorium Sunday February 28. The game starts at 1 p.m. with players arriving at 12 15 to sign autographs and autograph fans during halftime and after. Admission is 1 50 at the gate.

Date with Dad brings scouts and families to Shelby event

Scouts and fathers filled the Shelby school auditorium for the annual Date with Dad. About 130 girls and leaders participated with entertainment by Osceola and Shelby troops including a play, a choral reading, dances, and a film. The Valley Precinct chair announced 97 percent of the community donated 7.25 to the March of Dimes. Navy airman Edward J. Gavlik serves aboard USS Forrestal on its ninth Mediterranean deployment. Special guests included Prairie Hills Council president Mrs. Robert Peters.

Citizens of Tomorrow children's photos return to Record

The Record invites families to bring children to the Hotel on Thursday March 11 between 10 am and 5 pm for a free color portrait session. Center Fund Gifts Raise Projector Fund at Center

Gifts from Mrs Holly Gross Nicklaus Dorothy Gondringer Mrs Walter Koehler and center employees bring the Good Samaritan Center projector fund to 126 dollars. Jim Wunderlich estimates total cost for projector and screen at 300 dollars. Donations may be sent to Wunderlich at the Center.

New Fluoroscopy Upgrade Joined By Intensifier At Annie Jeffrey

Annie Jeffrey Hospital upgraded its radiology suite by replacing a 15 year old fl roscopy unit with a modern system and adding an intensifier. The new setup enables instant viewing and enlarges images similar to a photo enlarger. A 90 second film developer was installed to replace the prior 12 minute process. Dr. Robert Burns, radiologist from Columbus, now spends two days weekly at the facility and remains available for service as needed.

Osceola Endures Blizzard Conditions Washington’s Birthday

High winds and heavy snow created 12 inches of snowfall with 36 foot drifts clogging roads in Osceola and surrounding areas. Schools closed for two days and district basketball rounds were postponed. Businesses operated with limited help as streets stayed nearly impassable and travelers sought shelter. Bridge-high waters and spillover affected low-lying farms while most residents stayed in place awaiting safer travel. Weather data from Jim Wunderlich accompany the report.

Polk County Legion Convention Sets Membership Records

About 95 Legionnaires from Polk Osceola Shelby and Polk posts attended the Polk County Legion Convention in Osceola on Wednesday February 17. Osceola reached 186 members and Post commander Vernon Kuhnel will receive a membership award at the State Legion Convention in Omaha on February 27. District Commander Medford Barry of Colon Nebraska spoke, dinner was by the Polk Legion Auxiliary, and Shelby will host next year’s convention.

Osceola Bulldogs Triumph 103-56 Over St Edward

Osceola Bulldogs finished 14-3 season with a 103-56 win over visiting St Edward after a Friday postponement due to flooding. Bob Gissler led with 23 points, Lynn Bod en added 21, as twelve players scored and the team outrebounded 51 to field. The B team won 51-26, Jim Carlson leading with 11.

Ten Auxiliary Scholarships Available for Veteran Daughters

Ten American Legion Auxiliary scholarships are offered to senior girls who are daughters of veterans from World War I, World War II, the Korean War or Vietnam era and in need of financial aid. Applicants may contact County Superintendent Betty Majors or Guidance Counselor Glen Cederberg for forms. Return by March 15 with four letters of recommendation from the school principal, her clergyman, and two citizen references attesting to character, Americanism, and scholarship.

At the 79th Annual Meeting in Shelby on February 11, 1971, the Polk-Butler Mutual Insurance Co. elected Alonzo Ruth Willard Hiemer Hubert Girard Wayne Ruth as president and Arnold Fredrickson as vice president for three terms. Otto Selzer Jr. was appointed to fill a vacancy due to George M. Ebel’s death. Shelby Auxiliary Ladies served refreshments after.
