G W Nimocks reports January relief costs for Polk County. 235 families received 4166.57 in cash relief and 96 farm relief cases totaling 1520.60, with total relief to 277 families and 1025 people. Federal Commodities distributed amount to 404386. Administrative expense 52831. total January relief 6833.39 with 3423.67 from FERA and 3409.72 from county funds. 98 percent of relief for employable people is worked for, overall 88.5 percent when including nonworkable. Rep. Jay Hastings says petitions against the Child Tabor Amendment total over 30 000 names while about 1100 names support it. Investigation shows farmers oppose the amendment almost completely.
Nebraska Republicans plan a Lincoln homecoming on March first to inaugurate Founder's Day mirroring Kansas style events. Over two thousand attend the banquet and more than a thousand expected for afternoon meetings with speakers including Harold McGugin and George Olmstead. Ernest E. Anderson and Walfred Hellstrom, residents west of Osceola, were injured Saturday night about 9 30 when their 1932 Plymouth sedan collided head on with an oil transport on highway 81 three miles south of Stromsburg. They were treated at Stromsburg hospital by Dr. C L Anderson. Hellstrom sustained multiple broken bones cuts and bruises and Anderson had minor injuries. The Plymouth was nearly demolished and the Friend, Nebraska oil truck was badly damaged.
Wal lace Beery stars as the matchless showman in The Mighty Barnum at the Rivoli Theatre. Gene Fowler and Bess Meredyth adapted, with Virginia Bruce as Jenny Lind. The 20th Century Pictures release, directed by Walter Lang, features Adolph Menjou Rochelle Hudson and Janet Beecher in key roles.
Hospital notes report the birth of a baby girl to Mr and Mrs Otto Bernt of Shelby at Osceola Hospital on Friday February 15. Other items mention George DeLand recovering from an accidental gun wound and nearing discharge, W J Benson entering the hospital for major surgery by Dr Kennedy and Dr Schroeder, and Wayne Anderson, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Anderson, being discharged after a week under Dr Schroeder.
Towns along the Meridian Highway Number 81 have pressed for more attention this year. A Norfolk meeting occurred last week and a Columbus court house gathering is planned for next Sunday afternoon with Polk County towns to send representatives.

American Legion Auxiliary hosted a 130 luncheon at Scott Hall with Mrs Clyde Krause as guest speaker. Community Club met at Park hotel with a 7 o clock dinner. Mrs David B Peterson ill for several days. Birth announced for a baby girl at a local hospital. father injured in Saturday crash. Vernon Henkel ill with measles this week. F D Myrberg’s stock truck overturned at Morris Baker farm but cattle unharmed. Mr and Mrs Lek Johnson visited Omaha Tuesday.
E. E. Knerr, president of the county corn-hog association, says the 1935 corn-hog contract includes a clause allowing the Secretary of Agriculture to issue rulings, but a year's experience with similar 1934 rulings shows no hardship for signers. Otto Timmons, owner of the Newman Grove Hatchery, was served a summons to appear February 26 before County Judge Beeker on non compliance with hatchery code. W. S. Hanna of Kansas City filed the complaint. Timmons argues price regulations unfair and notes his 24 dollar code dues last year. He asserts perishable product needs flexible pricing and has hired Moyer & Moyer to represent him. He is father of Jay Timmons of Farmers Produce and Chick Store.
Mrs. J A Johansen died February 16 1935 at her home northeast of Osceola. She was 72 years three months and 29 days old. Born Elizabeth Schmoker in Berne Switzerland October 17 1860 She came to America at fourteen with parents settling in Polk County Nebraska. Married Julius Andrew Johansen January 20 1883 the couple had ten children eight survive. Surviving children listed include Abraham Shelby Fritz and Werner Osceola Albert Shelby Arthur Osceola Mrs Clifford Huddleston Shelby Mrs Walter Ross Monroe and Mrs Engel Duncan. Also 35 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services Monday at the family home conducted by Rev J W Stiverson U B Church Shelby Interment Wesley Chapel Cemetery beside her husband.

Weekend guests included Francis Hastert and Anne OBrien. Blanche Thomas of David City married Frank Medinger of David City at St Marys church. Simonsens moved to Carlson farm near Shelby. Roy Moore and family move from Kansas to Nebraska and farm the vacated land. Chas Kuntzelman visited his daughter Mabel Atkinson in Kearney. Mrs Fred Rumph returns from North Bend after daughter’s operation. Joseph Simonsen in Fort Crook spent a short leave with his parents. Kate Blake hosted a card party for Miss Louise Scholz with forty guests.
Polk county farmers have applied for 11 700 seedlings and transplants as Clarke McNary stock nears zero. Earl G Maxwell reports broadleaf varieties are gone with limited evergreens, red cedar, western yellow, Scotch and Jack pines remaining. Nebraska's 900000 seedling supply may be exhausted by week’s end.
Miss Louise Scholz daughter of Mr and Mrs A L Scholz of Shelby and Owen McClung of Shelby were married Tuesday morning February 19 at nine o clock by Rev O Fr Schlacher at the Catholic parsonage in Shelby Attendants were the bride's parents The couple plan a wedding breakfast with family and will reside on the groom's farm south of Shelby after a trip to Iowa The bride attended Shelby High School and Grand Island Business College and worked at the Shelby Sun The groom a Shelby High School graduate served thirteen months overseas in Company L 355th Infantry 89th Division
