A report notes new railroad crossing lights near Osceola suggesting plans for increased train traffic as fuel costs rise and road wear grows. The piece also covers community efforts for Dr Nossa, immigration questions about the Nossas, and local notices on postage, Boy Scouts, and hospital stays.
Osceola powered past Genoa 72-53 in Genoa and then crushed Henderson 78-54 to extend its winning run. Doyle Nelson led with 21 points, Rob Sterup 14, while Daryl Nelson and teammates controlled the boards and forced turnovers in both games.
Dale Runquist advanced to the state meet after placing second at 98 pounds in the district at Milford, finishing the Osceola team with sixth place overall. The Bulldogs earned four more placers, John Runquist and Coffin among top finishers, while Osceola will send Runquist to Lincoln for state competition.
The Farmers Cooperative Grain Company of Osceola and Silver Creek held its 63rd annual meeting at Osceola high school auditorium on February 11 with about 200 attendees. D. G. Ellis of Far Mar Co spoke on industry comparisons, and Donald Watts of Osceola was elected to the board. New officers named were Gerald Bryan president, Dale Dunn vice president, Dan Oppliger secretary. Prizes were awarded by local banks and elevators, and attendance by women was higher than before.
Osceola will play Mead in the first round of the district tournament at Milford on Monday February 24. Other C-8 District teams in the event at Southeast Technical Community College include Stromsburg David City Raymond Central Wahoo Neumann East Butler and North Bend. Seedings based on a point system list Stromsburg as first seed followed by Raymond Central Wahoo Neumann and Mead. Semi finals are set for February 27 with the championship on March 1 at 8 p.m.
Dr. Carlos Nossa and his wife remain aliens under a deportation cloud after a four hour Omaha hearing before U.S. Immigration Judge E. A. Berman. The judge declined to hear supporters or suspend the case while a private bill in Congress was pending. A decision is expected later with no set date.
