The storm left roads blocked and rail service behind schedule. Main highways reopen with narrow passages, county roads still blocked, and farmers using sleds for town trips. Courthouse offices cut to afternoons to conserve fuel. moderation may restore normal hours.
Osceola Reserves defeated Silver Creek 16 to 12 in the Pla-Loup tournament at Fullerton on Thursday. Mills and Scholz led Osceola with high scoring. Fullerton reserves beat St Edwards 31 to 2 in the opening game. Genoa Clarks and Stromsburg attended but Genoa Stromsburg game was rained out by a storm. Road conditions later stranded Stromsburg and Osceola crews at Central City until Saturday returning home via York by car and train.
Dr. E G Brillhart of Shelby delivered a nine wound injury to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Carter at two o clock Tuesday morning. The doctor rode an open caterpillar tractor nine miles to the Carter farm from Shelby with Henry Abbott as chauffeur finishing the trip after six hours. The two left Shelby Monday evening at six and reached the Carter farm at 2 in the morning.
W Ross King of Onisha and former Osceola resident filed Tuesday as a candidate for district judge. He has practiced as an Omaha attorney for twenty five years and serves as president of the Omaha board of education. He was president of the Omaha Bar association in 1935 and is a trustee and instructor for the law school of Omaha University.
The second annual Founders Day for the Nebraska Republican party will be held Saturday February 29 in Lincoln. Principal speakers include Mrs George B Simmons of Missouri and Governor Alf Landon of Kansas. Registration is 159 dollars covering banquet and reserved seating at the University Coliseum for the evening address. Reservations via County Chairman Roy J L Brieson.
Agricultural Agent Kelly announces farmers may bring their A A A Farm Record Books to the agent’s office for completeness checks and to receive a new free book. Three W P A workers are assigned to assist, with expectations farmers will use the service.
The 15th annual Osceola Paying Tax installment due February 7, 1936 is delinquent and accruing interest. Pay all installments at the County Treasurer’s office to save interest. Guy F. Ball, City Clerk.
Miss Emma Carlson has been seriously ill this week while Miss Minnie Carlson, her niece, shares the residence. About 40 properties are cut off from water mains as pipes freeze for the first time. coal shortages prompt school closures and limited purchases. Local people attend PEO meetings, host dinners and bridge games, and plan a large hardware sale as Ericson Anderson Hardware reopens.
Vernon Johnson of Osceola tops Polk County recipients as a Union Pacific 4-H scholar for 1935. State 4-H office at the University of Nebraska announced thirty-one scholarships across as many counties. Each award provides up to 100 dollars for education at the Nebraska college of agriculture or related courses, with 50 dollars for other short programs.
An amusing survey of University of Nebraska Lincoln student names shows duplications and wide variety. The registrar lists entries including Penner Penrod Darwin Hoover and many others across professions nationalities colors and animals. The roster also features culinary terms, flora and fauna, noble titles, and even expletives like Damm and Gee among the readable names.
Shelby Vinton Clark brought home his wife and baby from University Hospital in Omaha. Mr and Mrs Perry Platt returned to David City after snowbound days. The Eastern Star group met Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Wilbur Johnston with assistant hostesses Mrs. George Carson Mrs. Homer Hartson and Mrs. Don Byers helping.
Citizens with political ambitions must file early to appear on the primary ballot. Primary filings are due by March 5 to get a name on the ballot for April 14. Incumbents seeking nomination for another office must file by February 24, ten days earlier, to allow a filing window for the vacated position.
A meeting of the International Meridian Highway association will be held in Enid Oklahoma March 10 called by international president Wm F Hoehn. The Meridian road runs from Winnipeg to Mexico City crossing the United States as U S No 81. Plans will publicize U S No 81 as the best all weather route to the Texas Centennial exposition opening June 6. The highway is promoted as the top north south route to the expo.
Scotts Bluff leads the Clarke McNary farmstead planting drive with 31 400 trees applied for at Bar G Maxwell Nebraska Extension forester office. Fillmore 21 700 Adams 18 700 follow as top counties. Polk 9 300 and others including Lincoln Gage Holt Antelope Phelps Cuming Cherry rank behind. Farmers urged to apply now via office or by calling Mr Kelly Osceola.
Nebraska conducts a statewide seed corn testing drive with county agricultural agents, Smith-Hughes instructors, bankers, civic groups, and the NYA cooperating. Kelly oversees a seed testing station in Osceola Court House, urging farmers to submit 104 kernels from as many ears for germination tests. Early reports show uneven seed quality across northeastern counties, with smooth corn germinating better and maturing faster than rough corn. Demonstrations in county agent offices illustrate seed type differences.
The Polk County Nebraska school district No. 19 will hold a caucus at the Court House on March 3, 1936 at 7 30 p m to nominate members for each seat on the School District Board. The notice is issued by the School District Board on February 17, 1936.
