Polk County endures a severe blizzard that lands heavy snow drifts and temperatures below zero. Highways and railways shut down with none reaching Osceola until Monday. State and county crews clear roads slowly while businesses and schools face closures and delays.
Funeral services for Anton Anderson were conducted Friday afternoon at St. Pauls Lutheran Church by Rev. Paul Melin. He died February 4 at 80 in Osceola after a life spanning Sweden to Nebraska with farming work and two marriages producing multiple children and grandchildren.
Osceola Women's Club departments plan regular meetings for Monday February 17. Literature Department meets at Mrs. L. M. Shaw's home with a lesson on Nebraska Arts led by Mrs. Joel Hanson. Junior Literature Dept hosts a book review by Mrs. Lloyd Cole Mrs. Russell Snugg and Mrs. Kermit Johnson. Music Department gathers at the schoolhouse for rehearsal.
The 15th annual installment of the Osceolar Paying Tax due February 7, 1936, is delinquent and accruing interest. Pay all installments at the County Treasurer’s office to save interest. Guy F. Ball, City Clerk.
The Kill Kare Klub will meet on Wednesday evening of next week at the home of Mr and Mrs Alvin Merrick.

A severe blizzard shut schools, halted milk and bread deliveries, disrupted bus and train service, and kept a snow plow moving for hours. The storm, the worst since 1888, affected regional travel and daily life.
Miss Lillie Chindgren spent time with sister Mrs. Petrus Nelson. A large crowd attended the basketball tournament at Stromsburg last Wednesday and Thursday. Families and neighbors visited, shared meals, and weather hindered travel. several residents faced blizzard delays and school closures.
I. D. Huston departed last week for Mobile Alabama after receiving word that his sister was very seriously ill. He journeyed promptly to be with family during a critical health emergency.

Four Nebraska 4-H club members Cora Mae Briggs Mollie Svoboda Rex Brown and Avera Jespersen were selected to represent about 18 000 rural youths at the National 4-H Camp in Washington DC this June Agricultur al Agent Kelly announced The winners must be 16 and have a strong club record with multiple years of project work with Briggs noted for nine years in 51 clubs and leadership of 17 clubs Jespersen has built a 60 head Hampshire Guernsey purebred herd and has supplied neighbors with stock for seven years The Polk county program and eligibility rules were highlighted and the age and record requirements explained
With heavy snow and cold, no services or Sunday School or Luther League occurred last Sunday. Possible next Sunday remains uncertain. Thursday plans include Ladies Aid postponed meeting hosted by Mrs Grant Walgren, and Luther League gathering at 8 pm. Board of Administration also slated for afternoon. PAUL MELIN, Pastor.
Lloyd Timm departed Monday for Boulder Colorado to take employment at local mines.
Dr C R Peterson and family plan to move into the Thelander Peterson home west of Polk while the Will Schwiekert family moves from the Carl Steelquist farm to the Ed Cohagan home. The Missionary Society of the M BE Church met at Oscar Strand’s home with Mrs E E Pengelly assisting. Several local residents and families are noted with visits, dinners, and illnesses, including Ralph Shafer’s Mayo Hospital operation and John Nicholson’s death.
Broken Bow pilot Jack Jefford flew from Osceola to retrieve Shirley Temple film The Littlest Rebel after a blizzard halted a Saturday showing. Osceola lay snowbound with blocked roads and no trains, a plane landing on a farm to whisk Temple to Broken Bow twenty minutes late to keep her matinee engagement.
Stromsburg captured the county title after beating Osceola 15 to 13 in the final. Polk won the second team title 22 to 21 while Polk defeated Shelby 33 to 27 in the consolation, and Osceola beat Polk 19 to 10 in a hard fought game.
Agricultural Agent Kelly announced Nebraska’s 1936 pasture improvement contest with 1500 dollars in prizes. Polk county farmers may enter by April 1, with all participants in one class. Winners are chosen from pasture plans records and livestock kept, with county silver trophies for top ten and a Nebraska champion trophy. Entry blanks available at Osceola agricultural office.
Clarke McNary forest tree orders pour in from Nebraska counties with 681 200 trees ordered on February 7. Earl G Maxwell Extension Service reports that supplies of some tree kinds will run out soon. Polk County farmers urged to request an application blank from the Agricultural Agent by phone or mail without delay.
The Bridge Benefit planned by the Legion Auxiliary for Thursday night is postponed indefinitely due to weather conditions.
