Ace Tyrrell was elected president of the York Chamber of Commerce at the annual meeting. Osceola friends note Ace’s three years in York and his prior leadership of the Osceola Community Club. He is viewed as having the potential to improve York’s prospects.
Stromsburg begins steps to acquire the city electric and gas distribution system with Attorney R A Haggart hired as legal adviser. He previously handled a similar matter for St Paul and the spring election will decide the issue. A prior petition nearly reached the required signatories but was ruled illegal before a vote.
Jay C. Mahlin a 47 year old former Smith field banker died after a collision between his car and a Western States transfer company truck on a bridge four miles west of Duncan. His wife suffered scalp wounds and facial cuts and was hospitalized in Columbus. The couple had returned Willis to Midland college in Fremont after a weekend visit. Mahlin leaves a widow son and three brothers L of Fremont Harvey and Edgar of Rising City. He worked for the Texas company negotiating leases on Nebraska oil prospects. His home was in Smithfield.
Agricultural Agent Kelly announces a confidential service to close and summarize A A A farm records with W P A help. Fifteen Polk county farmers have joined this year, using a summarized, nonpersonal averages for improved practices. Farmers can start 1936 records by listing inventories and bringing them to the office for entry.
Births report a baby girl to Mr and Mrs Vinton Clark at University Hospital Omaha. A man, Gust Schneider, dies in Shelby after illness. A seven week old orphan baby joins Roy Johnson family. Nell Reece visits Columbus relatives. A Columbus car-pedestrian crash injures Mrs Leiber in Columbus. Holy Name Sodality hosts breakfast in Shelby with guests from Columbus. Ike Foster welcomes a baby boy in Shelby. Mrs Phil Campbell of Osceola undergoes surgery at Shelby Hospital. W F M S and Dorcas Society meet in Shelby. Ruth Stedman visits Shelton relatives. Russell Sawyer and family return from Western Nebraska. Gabel Brothers import eight Allis Chalmers tractors via Milwaukee. more arriving. Margaret Gondringer visits near Gresham. Monday snowstorm creates deep drifts. Tuesday train uses two engines. Mrs Bennett of Omaha visits relatives in Shelby. Sunday guests include A O Leiber Columbus and several Osceolans.
An exhibit of 150 full color prints from masters like Rembrandt Rubens Van Dyck Innes Weyant and Sargent will be shown at Osceola High School the week of February 24 to 28 to raise funds for buying more art. Evening programs accompany the exhibit with low admission proceeds benefiting the community art collection.
Max Carey resigns Wesleyan duties and returns to Stromsburg to study at the local high school extension center. Several students and staff travel between Lincoln, York, and Doane College for mid semester breaks and education meetings. Fire officials extinguish a closet blaze at Mrs Abbie Richards home, with nominal loss. Snow delays and postponements affect numerous social events and travel plans.
Eldena Johnson and Violette Carlson spent the weekend in Lincoln. Miss Evelyn Scholz also noted in the social column. Harry Pratt returned from Houston to attend his mother’s funeral. Mrs. W. E Pratt mentioned in the notice.
Examinations for the Osceola postmaster position will be held next Saturday in David City under civil service rules. Eight candidates qualified, including one woman, all Democrats. The top three will be sent to Congressman Binderup for selection, a process that often gives lawmakers sleepless nights.
San Francisco resident C B Johnson was released on a $30 cash bond to face a Monday police court gambling charge but failed to appear, leading to bond forfeiture. Police cited a card game at a local hotel involving Johnson Thompson and Polk County farmer August Hasselbalch with Hasselbalch losing about $162, which Johnson reportedly returned after arrest.
A dispatch reports Nelson O Brown Osceola rural carrier was made defendant in a twenty five thousand dollar damage suit filed by Claire Karns Enid Oklahoma. The suit stems from a June 165 last year auto collision on Highway 39 northwest of Osceola. Karns says he was permanently crippled.
Agricultural Agents of fice advises all Polk county farmers to test seed corn before selling or planting. Free seed testing available with reports mailed to each farmer. Tests show live kernel percentage and grades of kernels. Take samples from at least 100 ears, one or two kernels per ear.
Former Polk congressman John N. Norton may challenge Representative C. G. Binderup this year. Norton’s potential bid would echo surprising upsets seen in sports as he seeks a political comeback after losing the Democratic primary to A. C. Shallenberger. Shallenberger then defeated Binderup two years ago.
A widened log lists residents and guests from HACKBERRY N S and Stromsburg areas. Highlights include Abolt injuring a foot, snowbound travel, multiple Sunday visits to the Dwight Newcomer and Axel Severine homes, and PTA and Ladies Aid notices. Edith Dillsaver and 88-year-old Mrs Hewitt receive greetings.
Miss Emalyne Deuker hosted friends for a Friday gathering with games and luncheon. A. W. Shafer bought a house on South Polk now lived in by the Keneth McIntosh family. R. J. Allison was injured by a screwdriver and treated by Dr. Williams, now back at work. Small-town visits include Mr and Mrs Ralph Branting in Stromsburg and Berniece Lindquist from Hordville. Several groups and church committees scheduled events later, many postponed due to stormy weather.
Anton Anderson, 82, Osceola resident, died at his home after a brief illness. He is survived by ten children including C. Albin Anderson and Mrs. Lewis Herrmann, both of Osceola, with funeral plans pending and an obituary to follow next week.
A new state organization named the Nebraska Association of Mimeographed Papers was organized at Cordova on February 1 with K. H. Achtemeier as president and officers including Lewis Raymond as vice president Lucille Dickinson Osceola secretary and Alma Adkinson Benedict treasurer The group aims to critique and aid Nebraska school mimeographed papers through a circulating bulletin and plans a spring meeting about fifteen schools have signaled interest The meeting featured J W Grommers Seward Blue Valley Blade editor and a demonstration by Wuellser Lincoln from The Nebraska Typewriter Co on stencil cutting letter guides and color work
Osceola defeated Polk County 30 to 25 after leading the entire game with an 18 to 11 edge at the bell. Pierson led Osceola with 14 points as Polk struggled against tight defense. Osceola eyes the Polk County Tournament opening Wednesday against High Prairie. second strings fell 18-4 to Polk.
The Methodist Church lists next Sunday's study on The Test of Our Religion from Luke 6 39 49 with Can the blind lead the blind. Morning sermon titled The Only Open Road. Young People meet Monday at 7 45 led by Betty Jo Carson. Postponed last Monday due to storm. W H Wright.
The city hall meeting set for Monday evening is postponed to next Monday evening per Jay Hastings. Officials from Stromsburg and Shelby will join Osceola representatives to discuss the Meridian road which faces a risk of routing away from its current path.
