John Haberman of York is the new checker champion of Nebraska after the state tourney last week. He defeated J. P. Jenkins of Hordedge in Class A final 4-1. Hast ing of Osceola beat J. F. Collingham of York in Class B final. Thirty-nine prize money totaled ninety dollars across both classes. The event drew strong attendance and broad interest during the week of play.

Booze Car Crash Leads to Fines for York Men
F. B. Locksnood and Geo. F. Gaskell of York were fined after a Meridian bridge crash. Police found 96 pints whiskey and two gallons alcohol hidden under the bridge. Locksnood received 200 dollars and 60 days plus car confiscation. Gaskell 60 days and 100 dollar fine. Locksnood, a World War veteran, is ill. efforts seek parole and payment of his fine.

Salesman Victim of Brutal Highwaymen Attack
Edward R. Furman, a Federation of Nebraska Retailers insurance fieldman, was assaulted Tuesday night near Columbus when two highwaymen held him up. He knocked one down, then was struck with a blackjack and bound with wire before the robbers fled. He remains in Columbus hospital with brain concussion and neck bruising but expected to recover in a few days.

Mabel Erickson Pearce born May 22 1889 Stromsburg Nebraska died Friday February 8 1930 aged 40 years 8 months 11 days. She taught in Stromsburg and later moved to Boulder Colorado and Englewood where she ran a hardware business. She married L Norval Pearce October 24 1919 and leaves son John Dennis Pearce, her parents, two sisters Maude Erickson and Maude Yates, and many relatives. Funeral services were held Wednesday with Eastern Star and Baptist rites in Englewood and Stromsburg.

The Osceola Public School held its mid winter entertainment at the high school auditorium last Wednesday evening. It was the first show of the year and praised as one of the best. The Girls and Boys Glee Club directed by Miss Ruth Miller performed group selections and solos. Elizabeth Yantzi presented Home Economic Students in a clever style show with skits on the benefits of Home Economics. The auditorium was filled to capacity and the event drew high praise.
