Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the Taddiken Elevator in Shelby on Friday evening. The north side ignition trapped the offices on the south side, but records were saved. The building and contents, mainly corn, were a total loss. insurance covered the contents but only a minimum policy on the structure.

Mr and Mrs Charles Hastert observed their fiftieth anniversary with an open house on February 3 1948 at their Shelby home. The couple has four sons Bernard deceased Louis Clark and Francis and three daughters Viola Marie Margaret.

Marine Corps Reopens Lincoln Office for Enlistments
The U S Marine Corps announces the reopening of its Lincoln Nebraska office in the Post Office Building Room 434 D to accept enlistments and aid Civilian Marines. MSgt James T Jordan NCO in Charge says a Marine Sergeant will be in Osceola on the first and third Friday each month and may be reached at the Post Office. Young men 17 to 26 are urged to visit the Lincoln office to learn about the post war Marine Corps benefits.

The largest snow of the winter blanketed the area from Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night with strong winds. Drifts formed after plows, one way traffic appeared on 8 and 1 south and east, trains and mail service were disrupted, farms faced extra work clearing snow from buildings and livestock.
Shelby Beats Osceola Reserves in One Sided Victory
Shelby High School defeated Osceola 23 to 39 last Thursday at Osceola. Shelby opened strong 10 to 1, Osceola rallied, Shelby pulled away after intermission as the large crowd watched. Osceola Reserves also beat Shelby Reserves 138 to 20 in another game. Osceola hosts St Bonaventure February 17 in their last home game before Polk on February 20, with Polk County tournament in Osceola Thursday and Friday.

Warren Umshler Ranks in Upper Ten Percent of Class
Mr and Mrs F M Hartson learned that their son in law Warren Umshler passed the California State Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers exam in Sacramento. He graduated in the December class from the California College of Mortuary Science at Los Angeles and scored 100 in three subjects with others averaging 93 to 97. He will serve his apprenticeship and study at Fullerton California with wife and child.

Floyd Headlee assumes ownership of the Osceola pool hall from E. F. Nyquist. The building is closed for remodeling and redecorating. Nyquist ran the business for nineteen years. Heart Attack Fatal To W. H. Fulwider
William Henry Fulwider of Osceola Nebraska died of a heart attack on a Sunday morning in February 1948. He was born March 5 1875 in Douglas County Indiana and lived in South Dakota before moving to Nebraska in 1945. He is survived by his widow a son and a daughter, plus three brothers and grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Osceola with interment in the Osceola cemetery.
