Osceola High Wins County Tournament Title

Osceola Bulldogs upset Burg in the Pell County Tournament final by 27 to 31 amid boisterous Burg crowd. Scholz led with 18 points as Osceola built a 18 to 9 first half edge, then held on with strong defense and key contributions from Mills Crouse Schmoker and Carman. Preliminaries saw Osceola beat Shelby 29 to 49. second team beat Shelby 10 to 17 while Polk edged Osceola 19-13.

New Hiring Rules Allow Early Teacher Contracts

Polk County school boards seek clarification from Olive M. McBeth on a new law. It removes the requirement that retiring directors stay in office to sign teacher contracts on three member boards. Any two of the three directors can contract for the coming term, streamlining hires and reducing confusion.

Berniece Kumpf was released after a major operation and returned home. Mrs. Carl Johnson and baby are expected to leave hospital later this week. Ruth Merrick, daughter of Mr and Mrs Alvin Merrick, underwent appendicitis surgery Tuesday performed by Dr Hickens of Pinata and Dr Alliband.

Social visits and family travels in Shelby community

Sunday visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Rasp included Cornelius Kelly and family from Detroit Elmer Rasp family from Gresham N. S. Albert Miss Sophia Lux and Miss Bertha Benda. Others drove to Omaha to bring back Mrs. Margaret Filinger and daughter Margaret. Margaret had recovered enough from surgery at St Joseph hospital to return home. Several Columbus and Gresham residents visited Shelby hospitals and relatives. The Gleaners class hosted a party. Oskosh and Bradford appearances, weddings, hospital stays and a move to Oskaloosa Iowa were noted along with hospital updates for Grant Zedicher and Mrs. Henry Morris. Dr. A. J. Merrick and Mrs. Merrick visited from Fremont.

Stromsburg Couple Wed in Julesburg Colorado

Miss Venyce Arnold and Robert Burton of Stromsburg were married in Julesburg Colorado on January 27. The bride, a Stromsburg High School graduate, will reside in Big Springs Nebraska after February 15 where Burton has been transferred by the Union Pacific.
