The paper announces bids to surface 8.9 miles of Highway 16 from Shelby to Osceola using an oil mat method. Bids open March 10 for the section between Shelby and the big turn west of Osceola. Grading on Shelby to Rising City road begins this spring with a probable oil mat finish.
Edwin Vail, assistant attorney general, ruled that Nebraskans are legally their brother’s and sister’s keeper for old age assistance. He said if a relative has sufficient means to support an applicant, state aid must be denied. The decision was sought by Nemaha county attorney John P. McKnight regarding eligibility.
Mary Eller daughter of Frank and Mrs. Eller born November 9 1870 in Columbus Nebr died February 14 in Shelby at 67. She married William Glatter in Columbus September 25 1888 he died May 27 1931. Survived by twelve children, twenty two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. funeral at Sacred Heart Church Shelby with burial in Shelby cemetery.
Word reached Osceola last week of injuries to Miss Irma Hastings daughter of Mr and Mrs R N Hastings of the city while employed in California Initial reports said critical injury but later detail described a toboggan accident with head and back cuts not considered life threatening She is under Dr R L Schroeder former Osceola physician now in the West Coast for treatment.
Ted Swan underwent a major operation by Dr. Eklund Monday morning. Ruth Merrick will leave the hospital midweek after an appendectomy by Dr. Alliband. Maurine Schmoker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Schmoker, had emergency surgery for acute appendicitis by Dr. Eklund. Lavina Swanson, R. N., works at the hospital this week. Virgil Kisler of Polk had tonsils removed last Thursday by Dr. Eklund.
Mr and Mrs William Buhl entertained guests including Mr and Mrs Carl Johnson Mr and Mrs Raymond Branting and daughter and Mr and Mrs C F Johnson and Ford at their Osceola area residence on Sunday.
Shelby residents enjoyed several Galloping Teas at member homes. Visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hudders ton and two daughters from Ponoka Canada. Thelen bought a 400 acre Missouri farm and plans to move soon. James McMeekin and family attended a Plattsmouth Dramatic contest. Shirley McMeekin scored well.
Mrs Alfred M Johnson joined by Mr and Mrs Ted Fitch visited Lincoln to see her son Martin in General Hospital. A birthday party honored Mrs Oscar Fredrickson with many gifts from guests including Victor Newman Oliver Johnson Marvin Fredrickson and Ansel Fredrickson. The Luther League to host Old Songs Service Thursday at church parlors with Sander Peterson and Mrs Gust Chindgren serving. Get-To-Gether set for High Prairie school house Friday evening.
Polk county farmers will inspect two hog lots fed sorghum and corn at York on February 25 in a district sorghum livestock field day. The event shares results from Franklin county and Nebraska tests with experts Tolman and Frolik presenting feeding value, varieties, and cultural practices for 1988 sorghum production and pasture-forage programs.
Large family reunions and birthday parties occupied the Osceola area last week. Relatives gathered from St. Paul Central City Polk Benedict Superior York Schuyler and Columbus to celebrate multiple birthdays. Riverside Club plans a February 25 meeting with Mrs M Johnson.
Funeral services will be held today for E L Halquist a 67 year old long time Stromgburg resident who died Sunday of pneumonia. His widow brother and two sisters survive.

The HACKBERRY community notes a meeting of the Greens Chapel Ladies Aid on February 24. Local families entertain guests from nearby towns and many residents are hosting relatives during weekends. The Victor High School drama Nancy Ann Brown's Folks is slated for Friday at the school.

Merrick County Attorney Paul R. Morris said Lewis Sutke 23 son of Mr and Mrs George Sutke shot and killed himself with a shotgun His body was found near his farm home seven miles west of Silver Creek after he had been missing since midnight Wednesday His parents brother and four sisters survive.
