Mrs. Sam Snider of the valley sold 288 chickens to Duncan Produce Co last Friday and was paid 385.32 dollars. The birds included 24 hens 8% springs and 132 cipons all from her own flock. She says poultry brings more money than her husband imagined from his horses and that it was not a big year for chickens.
The iitth and Lth Physics classes debated rural school consolidation on Monday with Harriet Bush, Margaret Garson, Thelma Waslite for the affirmative and Adeline Fredrickson for the negative. A second debate is planned Tuesday with Myra Freedrickson and Phillip Nyberg opposing Esther Jackson and Nina Gestringe on the Missouri state superiority question.
The church lists a Saturday catechism meeting at the parsonage at noon and no Sunday School next Sunday for Séptuagesima. English Communion and installation of deacons and trustees are at 10:30 with Dr Sard in charge. Swedish service at 7:30 discusses Whence Cometh Salvation. Choir rehearsal Tuesday at 7:30. Harmony Society and Womans Missionary Society meet Thursday at 8 with Alinda Fernandez leading. The Gilbert Johnson family, new to York, rejoined the congregation.
Mrs A R Lucas of Funk Nebraska sought a county location while Henry Westergren of Winston Montana visited with uncle Henry Moberg. The D A R met at Mrs J A Westmnous home with a patriotic program and lunch. Funeral of Olof Norine held near Swede Plains M E Church, age 84, resident 50 years. A I Peterson improving at home hospital. Families of Ryström celebrated 48th anniversary at Clayton Rystrom home. Farmers Elevator annual meeting praised strong profits and new directors chosen. The death of C. L. Smith occurred last Saturday February 5 at a Topeka Kansas hospital following an operation. He was 100 years old and is survived by two children James Mickey of Osceola and Lynn Smith of Topeka. He worked at the W. O Johnson store in Osceola before moving with his children to Topeka after his wife died in 192. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen Lodge of Osceola and the Masonic Order of Topeka. The body was brought to Osceola and laid to rest in the Osceola cemetery. The N B B C Club will meet next Wednesday February 16 at the home of Mrs. Orville Mickey. Miss Ida M Harson returned Tuesday night from her annual Living buying trip in Chicago.
Mrs Mary Cypher is seriously ill this week and her daughter Mrs Chas e Baughan of Lincoln is with her. Miss Edna Peter, who has taught at Brighton Colorado, is here with her father who has been ill and expects to stay one month.
The Swede Homes Farmer's Union hosted a social Tuesday evening with entertainment from married women. Nearby movements include Edwin Johnson driving to Archer for Bill Luit's sale and Carl Cederberg buying a farm near Osceola. Miss Minnie Ekstrom visited York. Ladies Aid hosted Thursday gathering. Marvin and Ariel Fredrickson drove to Kearney. District No. 8 plans a four vote line party Friday afternoon amid several measles cases in the area.
F B Kelly county agent presented two motion picture reels at Swede Plain Church on Monday evening. The program featured two vocal numbers by Willard Lindburg and a reading by Miss Stevens. Audience gave hearty applause as Kelly discussed the Nebraska Standard Pig Crm Contest and its statewide farmer interest.
Myr and Mrs Louie Johnston visited G J Mentink Sunday afternoon. The community mourns Mrs Frank Swanson’s illness. Mrs Sam Crouse and Mrs E Crouse visited Joe Tschauner Thursday. Mr and Mrs Chas Nelson and Mr and Mrs Ericst of Marquette visited Ed Johnson and daughter Friday. Mrs Joe Tschauner assisted Jay Hastings one day last week caring for Hastings mother who is seriously ill. Maple Leaf Club met Feb 3 with 9 members and 1 visitor. plan a dinner and all day meeting at Addie Wiseman’s on Feb 17. everyone invited to bring their dinner and stay all day.
Mr and Mrs Emil Schott visited their son Joe and family on the Valley farm Wednesday returning home the same evening. Mr and Mrs Chas Kuta and family and Mr and Mrs Frank Kuta of Columbus dined with Walter Morys. Rose Morys plans a few weeks in Columbus. Grace Marie born to Albert Berat’s family baptized with Rudolf Urban visiting Shelby. Card games and radio music enjoyed at Julius Nebosis home. Large crowd expected at C L Thompson sale Tuesday. Thompson family to move. Wm Dane of Lincoln took a rooming house. Gazel Hartmar recalled. Benedict Messing operated in Shelby hospital after scarlet fever with mastoid complication. improving. Thompson children back to school after illness. Chester Dake family planning move near Grand Island. Julius Nebosis visited Albert Bernt. Kresha home added a Crosley radio. Dist. 13 pupils back in school. Farmer’s Union Store at Silver Creek closed. Farmers at George Kidder horse and mule sale in Osceola attended.
The obituary notes the death of Mrs Lucy Albertson this morning at her daughter's home. She was 89 and had been ill for several months. Funeral arrangements have not yet been set.
At a regular meeting the Community Club decided to hold a Father and Son Banquet with date to be set later. A committee will be appointed for arrangements. The meeting featured an excellent program including a saxophone duet by Nadine Stowe and Ruth Bond with Mil ler at the piano, readings by Mrs. Frank Veach, and a vocal by Mrs Clyde Peterson.
Harry Miller drove to Columbus and took a train to Omaha then returned the same day. Qeo Mutheney visited Shelby for business and reminiscing, now in Lincoln. Elizabeth Pruyn of Lincoln visited Shelby. Nettie Albers went to Columbus to see Miss Josephine Scholz.
Mesdames Martha and Ellen Larson and Mr and Mrs J F Nelson helped Leonard Nelson celebrate his birthday Sunday. Pleasant Hill Mission Circle met Jan 21 1997 with 25 members and 12 visitors. readings were shared and refreshments served. Polk High boys and girls basketball teams faced Brashaw teams on the home floor, girls tied 11 to 11 and Polk boys lost 14 to 11. Mrs Selma Benson hosted a six o clock dinner last Saturday for A H Sidwell Kenneth Samuels Rush Wilkens and L S Baker and Vic Sidwell. Claude Colby family spent the weekend with W F Robertson in Grand Island before returning home.
Mr and Mrs Chester Taylor and Kathy returned last week for Sidney after several weeks visi at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs Boss.
The Anti-Saloon League of Nebraska plans a county wide program in Polk County with field day town meetings and a Great Dramatic Debate Can the Law Be Enforced at Osceola Methodist Church on Feb 8 at 7 30 PM. Don Christgau wrote the drama and actors Rob Owen and Will Doda will portray a citizen and an official. The County Conference follows Feb 24 at 2 60 PM with speakers and a round table on law observance and enforcement.
The South Shelby Club and friends hosted a pleasant surprise party for Mrs. Darla Miller last Thursday, sharing a cafeteria style dinner and quilting for charity. Mrs. Miller received a sewing box as a gift. the Millers plan to move to Alliance Nebraska.
Happy Hour Society gathered February 3 at Mrs Tillie Weiseman's home with 16 members and 4 visitors. Mrs Ella Koehler led a program on Recreation in the Home and a contest awarded first prize to Mrs Retta Benson and second to Mrs Carson. A lunch was served. The next meeting is February 17 at Mrs Phil Weisemian's.
The M. and Ladies Aid will hold a Friday afternoon meeting in the church parlors with Mrs V A New Comer as hostess for the entertainment committee.
