Mrs. Lester Spelts To Lead Polk Cancer Crusade Again

Mrs. Lester Spelts of Stromsburg will chair the Polk County Cancer Crusade for the American Cancer Society for a third year in April. Frederick H. Wagener announced the 1956 goal of 26 million nationally, with Nebraska at 163,923 and Nebraskans contributing 131,554 last year. Polk County raised 1 071.78 in 1955. The seven cancer danger signals are listed, and the 1956 slogan is Fight Cancer With a Check Up And A Check.

Osceola Bulldogs triumphed in the Polk County tournament defeating Polk 79 to 46 in the final. Jan Grossnicklaus earned 24 points, with 20 coming in the first half, while Dinges added 19 and Triba 14. Polk’s Hanquist led their side with 21 in the semifinal win over Shelby.

Service Members Arrive in Korea Under Buddy System

Pvt Delano G Hahn of Polk arrives in Korea as a cannoner in the 24th Infantry Division within the buddy system. Hahn, son of Mrs Hannah Hahn, joined the Army July 1955 and trained at Camp Chaffee Arkansas. Cpl Larry Snodgrass arrives in Osceola with an honorable discharge after two years of service, with 18 months on Okinawa.

Open House Draws Hundreds to Annie Jeffrey Memorial Hospital

The Gas Company honored Osceola area staff with safety awards for long service. Recipients include W. H. Pierce eleven years safe working, L. R. Navy Carrier Oriskany Cruise Impresses Midwest Visitors

A writer and publisher toured the Essex class carrier Oriskany learning its 13 deck layout and crew of 2100 to 3500 during a week at sea. They witnessed day and night landings by jet pilots, 150 landings in one day, and noted dining and shows in both officer and enlisted messes. The visit included Joe DiMaggio’s cafe stop and a hope to publish a full trip account.
