Milton Kluck of Richland went to Omaha Sunday to sell cattle and ended up on a television program. A market report broadcast covered the cattle he sold and his Stockyards visit also led to a Colfax County call on screen.
The Stromsburg Headlight notes that some local farmers already get newspapers by air with the paper rolled and tied at each end and dropped near their homes each Sunday. The article ponders if daily mail could be delivered similarly in the future.
A study of official records shows that in 1940 only 160 of every 1000 fifth grade pupils in Nebraska progressed to a university or college. The subsequent graduation rate was small.
Jacob H. Foth a Henderson High School instructor his wife and their four year old daughter died in a two car crash at a country intersection south of Hampton Sunday noon. Three Foth children were hospitalized in York with serious injuries. The second car’s driver was not seriously injured.
The WSCS added to church equipment at the Methodist church including 12 dining tables, a storage space for them, and a kitchen hot water tank. The ladies anticipate purchasing additional needed equipment.
St Paul residents will vote in a special election on February 28 to approve funding for a new grade school and a community auditorium, seeking to modernize local education and civic facilities.
The University of Nebraska live stock judging team won four of five first place awards at the Fort Worth event, finishing seventh among 16 teams. Norman Tooker of Silver Creek led hog judging with a first place finish.
Sheriff Carl North and Ervin Johnson traced stolen goods to Sterling Colorado last Thursday bringing back household items jewelry and other property stolen weeks earlier from the J Albin Johnson and George Lovgren farms west of Sutton The two Kansas youths accused of the thefts are in U S Marshal custody at Denver according to The Sutton News
The Davis log house a mile west of Scotia, likely the oldest in Greeley county and the North Loup valley, has stood since 1874. The Henry Johnsons move to North Loup, taking with them cedar logs cut in Cedar canyon and hauled by ox team. Some logs were floated down the North Loup river.
The Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington schedules a hearing in Albion on March 13 to consider the Chicago and Northwestern Railway abandonment of service on its Scribner Oakdale branch between Scribner and Humphrey, per a Humphrey Democrat report.
A. T. Reece of Reece Tractor & Equipment Co. returned from Lincoln where about 500 Ford Tractor and Dearborn Farm Equipment dealers met at the Cornhusker Hotel. Dearborn officials reported 105000 Ford Tractors produced in 1949, many shipped to farms in the state. Roy Morgan and John Cerny accompanied Reece.

Otto Fleming born January 27 1889 in Germany died January 28 1950 at 61. He came to Michigan with parents at age four and later moved to Nebraska in 1932 with wife Ella Westergreen Beattie who died in 1948. A World War I veteran and Luther an Church brotherhood treasurer, he leaves a daughter Lois and brother Carl. Funeral Feb 1 at Kepner's with military honors and local color guards. interment near Benedict.
The state requires all vehicles to display the new license tags by February 15. February 14 is the last day to purchase tags and avoid arrest. Extensions were granted in prior years, but violations will be arrested on the 15th this year.
Mrs. Eva Burns, mother of Mrs. Carl Cederberg of Osceola, died at Mennonite Hospital in Beatrice after a seven week hospitalization. She was 56 years old.
Paul J. Johnson, 52, of Las Vegas Nevada, son of W O Johnson and nephew of Joel Hanson of Osceola, died January 29 1950. He grew up in Osceola and graduated from the Osceola public schools. He leaves a wife a daughter and a son and was in business in Las Vegas Nevada.
Two public auctions set for Osceola area. On February 15 Merrick and Ingalls auctioneers ofrece a farm clean up sale with a 1948 M M tractor and 1949 M M combine plus cattle horses and household goods starting at 12 30. On February 16 Daisy Zang to sell buildings and lean tos including a hen house granary hog shed barn and tool shed with miscellaneous lumber starting at 9. Don Byers clerk.
Carroll O. Stauffer was named to the judgeship after the death of Judge F. W. Dincan. He is brother in law to Joel Hanson abstractor of Osceola. Hanson and Stauffer wed in Oakland while Miss Hanson taught there. Appointment came from Governor Val Peterson and will be decided by election after the present term ends.

Polk County Soil Conservation District outlines cooperative seed production for Intermediate wheatgrass Sandlove switch tall wheatgrass and related grasses. Farmers plant in rows on productive soil with weed control, seed offered free with share of first two crops. A meeting of baseball fans is set for eight o clock next Monday evening February 13 at the legion rooms upstairs over the club. All who want Osceola to have a ball club next year should attend as plans will be discussed and committees appointed for next season. Business men and farmers in the territory are urged to be present.
Social calendar lists a Smorgasbord at Osceola high school auditorium on Tuesday in February. Wesley Chapel Club meets February 15 with Mrs Glen Richards and Lulu Burns assisting. Maple Leaf Club meets February 9 with Mrs Calmar Dunn and Faye Wyman as program leader. Ride-A-Wees meet February 17 with Mrs Schneider. PEO meets February 16 at Mrs Anne Craven's home. Royal Neighbor Social set February 16 at 7:30 pm in lodge rooms. Rebekah Lodge meets February 10. Stoner Club meets February 15 with Elsie Stewart and Mae Scholz assisting hostess.
Osceola relatives learned this week that Mrs. Asmus Hennings, a former Polk County resident, died February 2 after a lingering illness in Star City Canada. Surviving her are her husband two sons and one daughter one sister Mrs Timms of Osceola two brothers Fred Schmoker of Lincoln and Chas Schmoker of Arcadia Nebraska. Funeral services were held Sunday at Star City.
Funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church for Ethel Nelson who died after a hospitalization period. She is survived by her son Marvin, her mother Edna Anderson, and several brothers and sisters. Interment followed in Osceola cemetery.
Osceola defeats Silver Creek 40 on their home court to snap an eleven game slide. Nelson scores 18 and Johnston 14 as Osceola leads 26 22 at halftime and 37 26 after three quarters with reserves adding a 37 14 triumph. Silver Creek’s Sokol tops with 16 points while Walgreen and Brazee miss the game.
Osceola fell 32 to 28 at Shelby as the Bulldogs fought back from a 18-9 halftime deficit. Johnson led Osceola with 11 points while Shelby maintained a 29-25 edge late in the third before pulling away with steady defense and a reserves victory 28-9 in the opener.
Mr and Mrs Neil Brigham and Jackie Ray visited near Shelby with Curley McMeekin family. John Zohner and Louis Benda hosted guests in Shelby. Warren Andersen of Omaha stopped by Frank Andersen home. Edward Lisko called on Anna Seberger in Shelby. Barney Krebsbach also visited. Butch Eschler and Maxine of Rising City visited the Eschler family in Omaha.
Miss Patty L Kresha returns to Omaha home following the death of her father and notes she is employed there.
Osceola hosts Farmers Day February 22 at the high school gym and Methodist Church basement. Ansel Fredrickson tests sorghum varieties. W. H. Brokaw addresses farmers after lunch with photos on Europe’s agriculture. Other talks cover sweet clover weevil corn borer and storage methods. BUG Club reorganizes with eleven girls choosing Learning to be a Homemaker project. next meeting February 11.
The Polk County National Farm Loan Association holds its annual meeting in Osceola at the school gym with a forenoon business session at 10:30. Hilbert Buchta presides as two directors are elected for three years, a noon dinner is served by the Catholic ladies, and talks by Lorena Hahn on Germany welfare and Harold Klingman on soil conservation follow.
Funeral services were held Saturday February 4 at 10:00 a m with High Mass of Requiem celebrated by Rev. John H Howe. The service featured four daughters as choir members and Miss Sophia Kresha as organist. Sons Leo John George Martin Wilfred and Adrian served as active pallbearers. Burial followed at St Andrews cemetery.
